The Cancer Project #14 - Covering my head

After finishing chemo I got so good at covering my head, I thought I’d share how I did it. If you have cancer and you feel nervous about losing your hair - I get it! Just as an update, neulasta gives me scary throbbing bone pain because I’m sensitive to it, but I need it. In this episode I’ll tell you all about Taxol, THE END OF CHEMO!! my radioactive seed placement, and my next surgery happening today (because why not get more?). Celebrate with me - Taxol has its down times and pain (especially 3 days after getting it) but overall was a breeze in comparison to AC. Also I don’t get periods anymore and I love it. And we are going in today for that last little bit...

In this episode learn about my trip to meet the radiation oncologist! Turns out my medical oncologist (chemo doc) thinks I’m gonna make it through chemo. It seems like forever away but this referral to the radiation oncologist was a glimmer of hope for me in a super dark time at the end of AC. For chemo #2 a MAN came into the room and totally threw me! A fellow. I learned so much about how hard it is to be your truest self when depending on people to save your life. No lace front just a monofilament part so you look like you have scalp showing on the part...sounds like you need a large cap wig...sometimes it helps to get used to a new wig with a little bit of wearing at a time...give yourself time to adjust...lots of UA-cam people can help you like Patti's Pearls or Mimi's Wig Boutique... have fun and do what feels best for you and don't be afraid to fluff up the wig...the more you smash it down, the more wiggy it looks and feels. I’m so glad you found me too! I hope it’s helpful. You’re not alone! Most docs have a nurse practitioner who works with them who can guide you. Do they call you back when you have questions? All the surgeons are good - it’s the bedside manner and that’s tough when you have bc. Dr. Heerdt is beloved for that reason but many folks have teams that help. Have you met Roz the social worker yet? I made some very close friends through my support group there. It made everything much less scary. I’m here if you need me sister fist ❤️👊🏼

    hii just came across your story....glad ur doing ok. question...did u ever think about getting a mastectomy after the first lumpectomy?

    • @Tanya_Wills
      @Tanya_Wills 2 роки тому

      Hi! Yes I did. I read a bunch of literature about it because I couldn’t decide what to do. Also I didn’t know if Dr. Heerdt was going to suggest a mastectomy. So I wanted to be prepared. I sat with her and told her I wanted all the surgery I needed, and not what I didn’t. She of course said it was ultimately my choice but that she was certain I didn’t need a mastectomy. So I went with the second lumpectomy. It’s 3 years ago and so far I’m very happy with the decision. I should say my friends who had mastectomies are also very happy. Meaning: you will be okay. Follow your instincts and talk with trusted people. In some cases mastectomy is the only choice. But for some of us, we have options, and it can be hard to choose. It’s very personal and one isn’t better than the other ❤️👊🏼

      @Tanya_Wills 2 роки тому

      @@hana036 yes it takes a while to get surgery. It’s normal. They will consult with you about your particular case. Everyone is different. If they think it’s impossible to get a decent cosmetic outcome with a lumpectomy, they will refer you to a plastic surgeon to discuss options. That said, I have many friends who are small chested and had lumpectomies and are very happy! It depends on the size and location of your tumor.

    I have a theater background but never wore a wig in my many years of plays! Glad you got around to releasing this video. It seems like it has the potential to be really helpful to folks.
