The Abandoned United American Cemetery (Cincinnati, Ohio)
The United American Cemetery is a historic African American burial ground. It was founded in 1883 but includes many graves moved from an earlier cemetery in Avondale, so the earliest legible tombstone is from 1832. The grounds were laid out by prominent landscape architect Adolph Strauch, who also designed Spring Grove Cemetery. This is the resting place of Underground Railroad figures as well as writers, politicians, businesspeople, artists, Civil Rights leaders, and many military veterans, including at
least 55 African American veterans of the Civil War. By the middle of the twentieth century the cemetery became increasingly neglected. A group of plot owners sued the cemetery association in 1956. The courts appointed a new board to operate the cemetery but the board was unable to convince plot owners to pay for perpetual care which would generate funds for ongoing cemetery maintenance. In 1968 the cemetery was transferred to Union Baptist Church. The cemetery was founded by the United Colored American Association, but by 1968, the original cemetery association no longer existed, and at the request of Councilman Charles P. Taft,
ownership was transferred to the Union Baptist Church.

One of the activities I remember being popular to do on a Friday or Saturday night was going to the movie theaters with a group of friends and buying the popcorn that was soaked in butter with a large soda that raised your sugar levels to to the point of no return. Then in March of 2020, the coronavirus pandemic came and completely wrecked the industry with most movie theaters either closing, b...
The Abandoned Brentwood Bowl (Cincinnati, Ohio)

Brentwood Bowl, a once-popular bowling alley in Springfield Township, was forced to close due to the coronavirus pandemic. A strike would be pretty hard to come by at many local bowling alleys these days. Not because of lack of skill, but lack of players. The 48 lane bowling center has become an icon in Springfield Township, first opening its doors in 1960. This conventional bowling alley, whic...
The Abandoned Cincinnati Inclines (Cincinnati, Ohio)

Most Cincinnatians know our hilly city once boasted five inclines to Price Hill, Fairview, Bellevue, Mt. Auburn, and Mt. Adams. Our upstream neighbor in Pittsburgh installed its first inclined railway in 1864. Although that first incline carried nothing but coal for several years, it was soon adapted to passenger service. Pittsburgh had three functional inclines before Cincinnati’s first went i...

The Abandoned Avondale Barn (Cincinnati, Ohio)

Cincinnati's first settlers made their home on the large flat basin that now includes downtown, Over-the-Rhine, and the West End. By the 1850s, the city's population was too large for the basin alone, and people started moving to the city's surrounding hills. Horsecars were the first form of public transportation, with operation beginning on September 14, 1859. Although horsecars had been runni...

My family managed the beach until 2011 when it was sold to new owners. You can see me in the commercial. I'm the one sitting on the side of the pearl in a bandeau top and then sliding down the kid slide head first (both things actually against the rules of the park lol). A lot of the other people in commercials are family members. I practically grew up in the place, I was there every day. It makes me so sad to see it empty and abandoned. I worked in various departments, I really loved that place and my family put so much work into it. Each slide was a custom build, designed by my grandfather. He would draw blueprints on his drafting table and my uncle would make it happen. No mass produced slides there. All unique. It was owned by a guy who only owned the beach, no other parks. He sold it to a company that owned and managed about 35 different Waterparks around the country. The first thing they did was fire the entire management staff, all of my aunts and uncles who had run the various departments for almost 20 years, since it had opened, and replaced them with their own staff. I still remember my aunt, the GM, calling me in tears saying that the beach had been sold, everyone had been fired, and I would no longer have a job in the marketing department when I came home from college. The beach was like a part of the family. Even my very first car, a PT cruiser I had bought from my grandpa, was purchased by the beach and repurposed into a very cool wood panel promotional vehicle that I was then hired to drive. It got sold to the new owners along with everything else. The new owner drove it for a little while. Then jt was left in the parking lot and a tree branch fell onto it in a storm and totaled it. The dedication just wasn't there on the new owners part. They really ran it into the ground in about three years and it makes me so sad.

That's really cool. Your grandfather cooked up some real cool slides. Except for the pipeline plunge. I viscerally remember my claustrophobia. But the cliff is certainly iconic, and a rite of passage
