Ordinary Bloke On A Bike
United Kingdom
Приєднався 2 лип 2013
A few years ago I decided to take up cycling to keep up a decent level of fitness and try to alleviate arthritic pain and mental health issues I was having at the time.
It has become something of a hobby and I find myself looking for challenges and enjoy riding in new places. I combined fundraising for Zoe"s Place baby Hospice in Coventry with my cycling and ended up doing Lands' End to John O'Groats in August 2021 raising almost £10,000.
I have the bug so there will be more of that to come and I will shoot some footage hopefully as Im experimenting with my new toy, the Insta 360 One x2 Camera.
In spite of cycling becoming a bigger part of my life I'm no athletic wannabe racer and remain an ordinary bloke on a bike, having fun.

Brilliant. Thank you. I had worked out that bifocals were likely a good option. Eventually found Optilabs and then your your video. I will be calling Optilabs.
@@SimonCurrey I’m glad it helped , you won’t be disappointed 👍
Hi, I am Sunil from India. I like this bag and the way you showed it. I have one question though. If I put the sancks, eatables, etc. those things must be bouncing on the bumpy roads, right?
Hi there. I’ve never encountered a problem possibly because I have the bag fairly full. If you have a spare layer of clothing like a gilet or something like that it would fill any gaps . I think if you have stuff jumping around then I’d say the bag is too big for what you need. Hope that helps 👍🚴
Nice video 🙏; I just had my first garmin (edge 1040 solar) ever; and to be honest it's quite a struggle to understand how it works....; but your video is very helpful, thanks from the Netherlands
@@RobFluit Thank you so much for your feedback, I make these in the hope they help others so great to hear this. The 1040 is a great and complex piece of kit for sure 😁👍
Must been hard but rewarding😮😂❤
@@gwiedo53 Definitely both of those , they go hand in hand I think 😁
Haha. You’ve done a bloopers video😂

@@OrdinaryBlokeOnABike have you guessed who I am?
Now you have me thinking. Someone I've cycled with and going by the videos on your channel, someone in London area so I'd guess this might be Darren?
@@OrdinaryBlokeOnABike Certainly is my friend
Another problem is when you cycle along a watercourse, the warning is also shown even though the hole is on the other side of the watercourse, very annoying.
Less is more, there are to many warnings and then i don't have a quiet ride any more. Other warnings are usefull so i don't disable . Maybe ther must come a new upgrade to disable the warnings of your personal choise .
I think this would be great if pot holes were an occasional hazard but there are just too many of them - you don’t really need to be warned because you expect them all the time - turning off specific warnings would be a good idea 👍
Get onnit lad ❤
@@peperry8349 Definitely !! 😁
40 mile an hr gust had me off yesterday. I hurt my neck landing chin first then my nose got some. both elbows. left hip and knee. both hands got some as well. gloves ruined controls trashed. It was extremely painful & bloody don’t do it”
Wow that sounds terrible and I hope you heal quickly. Must admit I wouldn't venture out in wind like that so "don't do it" is good advice 👍
@ thank you 🙏
Thanks for this it's encouraged me to get back on the bike. I'm a suffer of depression and anxiety and this video really helped thank you.
Thank you for your kind comments and I'm so glad it helped. You've also encouraged me to keep making videos as I was getting disillusioned about whether they do any good other than entertain myself as I had hope videos on a subject such as this would reach more people - so a thank you from me too 😁
thanks for the video. I have two questions - 1. how did you get the head unit video of your Garmin and sync it to the actual video? 2. Is there a way to remove the navigation screen from the top of climb pro? I find it quite useless most of the time as my climbs tend to be a straight line road. I would much prefer to have more room for detail below the gradient section to include HR, Cadence, Speed etc which I find more relevant on a climb. Let me know. Cheers
Hello 1. There is a record screen option but only if you are a Beta version of the Unit's software. To be honest it's long winded as it doesn't actually record it just takes 100's of BMP files which you then have to stitch together using software which gives a video that is way too fast so you then have to slow it down and synch to the video by trial and error !! 2. As far as I can see on "free ride" climbro you are stuck with the navigate screen and it only goes away if you are following a route on your unit - Hope this helps, although it doesn't really 😁
Some people shouldn't wear lycra. You just made the list 😂
Thank you….I think ! 😂😂

Bill, we all have a story and a journey. Glad to be able to share yours, through a shared love of cycling. Have you tried any recumbents?
Thank You and no I haven't .....yet !! 😁
Hello Bill, An interesting video, thank you. As they say "If you cant measure it, you cant improve it" so having so much data does help in finding a way to improve performance. Take care. Paul,,
Thank you for that, that’s a quote I might steal and use👍😁
Hi Bill, I love all this Garmin geeky stats talk. Please keep doing it.
@adammillsindustries. Thank you matey 👍
I’ve given up on Garmin stats and am just going on how I feel now. I do track my HRV and sleep on my daily driver Apple Watch Ultra and agree it’s useful but all the rest seem to me to take away from the joy through internal gaslighting. I have a feeling it’s only going to get worse as generative AI kick in. It’s already annoying on Strava.
Yea I do get that and to be honest I only did this because I had a hunch I had made it difficult for myself and wanted to see if the HRV data was reflecting that , so yes, riding on how I fell.... I felt s*** and the data said "no wonder" 🤣
Would it still be comfortable without wearing a bib? Or is the leather variant better bibless
@@Mizi08 Hiya , Personally I’d never ride a bike without padded bib shorts so probably not able to honestly answer the 2nd question. Maybe if you’re just cycling down the road it would be fine but it’s bibs every time for me regardless of the saddle or length of the ride 😁
After seeing this warning for the first time recent;y, while on a single track woods trail, I found your video post while searching the topic. There is a garmin video explaining the function but unfortunately, the animal type is not a choice. There is a HUGE difference between say a black bear vs a mountain lion or even an aggressive dog.
Yea I agree, it"s a bit vague that one !
there must come a way to disable the warnings that are not usefull for every one his personal choice .
Brilliant video Bill watching it and listening to your commentary I’ve learnt a lot even though I been going there for over 15 years.
Thank you Mick !! It was an interesting day out 🚴♂
This video helps me alot. Thank you so much
It’s my pleasure , thank you for watching it 😁
Very helpful review as I bought one recently and the explanation of its functions was poor. You explained it all very well and now I feel confident setting it up and using it. Thanks very much
Thank you Alex I'm glad it helped - it's a great thing to have on the bike for sure 👍
How you delete manual warning?
Do you mean adding a hazard by mistake ? If so, I don't think there is a way of deleting , it will eventually disappear when other cyclists confirm it isn't there 👍
@@OrdinaryBlokeOnABike Thanks no way to remove i think.
You’ve covered this well. I personally think it won’t take off. The roads around me are like bombed runways for miles. People can’t be bothered to input many. I’ve ridden on stretches where there’s 20 big holes and one of them is reported. It’s interesting to see if it is a gimmick or fad. I hope it takes off. Many cyclists are on wahoo units around here too. Time will tell.
@adammillsindustries. I'm gradually coming to the same conclusion !!
There is a great film called ‘The Way’ with Martin Sheen, about the Camino de Santiago, and a bunch of people who meet on the route, and their various reasons for walking it
I'll definitely give that a look 👍
Hey just checking in on you friend. Hope all is well. Looking forward to your next update.
That ride was a great decision, I've felt great since and done several rides - Thank you !!
The music whilst talking is a real distraction. Please re-record without the music playing. I could not watch your video due to the music playing.
Hi , I'm sorry this was a problem for you , but I'm not able to re-record this, however it's a point I will take forward in my future videos 👍
Brilliant video with a very powerful message about the link between mind and body. I don't cycle, but I do run and I live by the principle that when I am suffering from CBA, that's when I need to run the most. I could wax lyrical about how running has freed me from the 'mind goblins', but you've described it perfectly here; be it on a bike or on foot, when CBA strikes, get out there and just breath. ❤😊 😊😊
Thanks for watching it and commenting like you did which helps emphasise the message 😁
I’m glad you posted this. It’s Thursday night and I haven’t touched my bike since Sunday which is probably the longest stretch in 2 years. I get the feeling.
I'm glad it helped, I don't think I've ever gone out on the bike and regretted it but plenty of times I've regretted sitting around not bothering to get out on it😁
It’s already being used. I’ve seen a few updates by riders to let us know about hazards.
Yes me too but I don't know what the pothole situation is like over there but almost all warnings here are potholes !
Warning by mistake send, how to delete manual?
@@martinnegron6767 thanks
To many warnings on the screen, not funny anymore, less is more.
Well done mate for sticking at it. If you're not already have your thought about joining a cycling club. It was a game changer for me since gets you out on a Sunday morning and gives you something to keep fit for in between. Always feel better after a ride with like minded people.
Cheers pal ! Yea I advocate this very thing to everyone for the reason you mentioned among others. I just needed to take my own advice and since this ride I’ve done 4 club rides and feel way more positive again 😁 10 Reasons Beginner & Average Cyclists Should Join A Cycling Club ua-cam.com/video/1y10zbvSUQw/v-deo.html
Just got back from a ride and as a widower dealing with grief I can say that cycling has made a big difference to me. I have never gone for a ride and felt mentally worse afterwards always better.
No one would know the benefit more than someone like yourself - thank you for sharing that 🚴♂️❤️
Having a personality disorder, I face this sort of thing on a regular basis, but once you get into the countryside and smell that horsesh*t, it doesn't get any better.
Ahhhh someone else inspired by those farmyard smells !! 😂
@@OrdinaryBlokeOnABike I'm sure it's an 'ism' of some sort lol
Thanks for your videos the importance of exercise, and the mental health benefits it brings. Other key things that helped me in the past are diet changes and fasting, although fasting doesn't go too well when doing massive rides as I need the fuel! The occasional bit of really intense exercise is fabulous to really pick me up and make me feel good. I can get down in the dumps if I can't get out regularly.
Thank You ! Yes diet is very important especially as we often find comfort when low , in food that doesn’t help us in spite of their label “comfort food”
Exercise and feeling better... It's an important topic, and one that many of those struggling need to hear. I hope your video does well. It reminds me of my 'mood boost' video. Despite good click through rate and view duration, it didn't get many impressions. I suspect UA-cam doesn't promote such videos as much, as it's more difficult to advertise products to sell on them. Soon as you mention money, or gadgets, then views go up! There will be people that really need to hear this though, so it's worth it to hopefully help and encourage them. Well done getting out, and in making the video. Take care and KEEP pedaling!
Thank you - you're right all round. The videos I get most coverage on are all regarding gadgets . This is a message I put out there a lot but sadly they don't get to their target audience so easily. Happy Cycling to you 👍🚴♂️
Where does one's front light go? Bag obscures it, methinks.
Excellent question which I hadn’t covered as I never ride at night and only use the bag for specific reasons during daylight ! It would cause an issue for a typically mounted handlebar light like mine although I’m aware of various workarounds other users have, like small height extension for a handlebar light, Helmet light, fork mounted light etc but yep- you got me with that one 😁👍
@@OrdinaryBlokeOnABike Great reply, thanks Bill. So many handlebar bags are too tall for a light which is a major safety issue in my opinion. I rarely ride at night too but still have a light blinking away to startle on-coming (van) drivers. I'll continue my quest for the perfect bag. Happy Riding, cheers Graham.

I'm in the market to upgrade from older Garmin 810's whose batteries are slowly getting less and less capacity. I have an old GoPro that I almost never use because once the SD card is full, you cant overwrite. (its older). I dont think Garmins are necessarily better than Wahoo or any other computer, but I use them because they are sort of a standard, and guys like you test them out. Personally, theres just too much configuration etc with my 810, which looks simple compared to all the things I would need to do just to get a decent rear camera. BUT - this looks likes a game changer, and is really more what I want. (no better camera?) The idea that the video is stored in short clips makes sense. Who needs a 20 minute video of nothing. What you want is to be able to get the license plate number of the car or truck that just ran you off the road intentionally, right? So resolution and conservation of battery are essential. Ease of use would be nice too.
It's a great unit and I love that it has a setting where it doesn't record lots of nothing but starts when it detects a vehicle like the one in this short clip which went straight to the Police who contacted the driver. If you pause it as it passes me the license plate is clear 👍 ua-cam.com/users/shortsNKZGXxF3YzY?si=6IQUmDmOa2PZ1vaV
@@OrdinaryBlokeOnABike Does it go off constantly if you have a ride partner who tends to draft? (how good is it at distinguishing cyclists from vehicles?) THANKS
@@ds94703 In all the years I've used these I've maybe had a handful of times when it was a cyclist and always when it was someone going much faster than me about to overtake. I ride a lot with a club in groups of 6-8 people and it never does trhis and still picks up vehicles in spite of having cyclists in my group right behind me

@@OrdinaryBlokeOnABike are you not doing it this year?
No plan to yet unless my pal who lives that way talks me into it again 😂
@@OrdinaryBlokeOnABike see you there if you are doing it Sir,
I have photochromatic (off Uv) single prescription...thinking about bifocals. Are the photochromic type of yours, ones that works off UV or would they wirk while driving a car?
Hi, a great question which led me to contact Optlabs. Mine react to UV so don't react so well behind a car windscreen but until very recently "transitions" lenses on bifocal were available which do work when driving but they have a temporary issue in getting hold of these so have removed the option. If Varifocals are required though then Transitions lenses can still be ordered.
So the split or dual screen cannot be edited? Thanks for your replies and your help with this.
I won’t be able to look at mine for another 10 days but as far as I can tell you can’t which seems crazy really
How do you get that split screen -course + climbpro? When a climb is shown it takes full screen so I cannot see my route any more .
Where you following a loaded course? The dual screen is when it senses a climb coming up when you're not following a course ( I'm away right now so can't check but sure this can be edited) The screen you describe is what climb Pro looks like on a climb during a pre determined loaded course
That's correct. I get that fulltime climbpro screen when following a preloaded gpx route. I would prefer a split screen so I can still see the course map.
@@wvr8304 It really is strange that Garmin gave you the screen you want when they gave us Climbpro on a free ride but can't include the ability to include the map when climb pro pops up when following a route, hopefully it's on their list of desireable improvements
After watching your video I ordered one from Amazon it came in the very next day. Today I ended up letting a fellow rider use it. As I passed he was fixing a flat so I figured what better way than a real world use. He was all about it. We were impressed. I sent him the link. He’s getting one too.
Nice to hear about it be used "for real" 😁 Don't forget the discount code BILLROSS which can only be used on their website rather than Amazon 👍
Those roads are so narrow it’s hard to imagine 2 cars coming together in opposite directions. While we worry about cars here in the US it seems you must worry about sheep. :) the scenery is absolutely beautiful.

Brooks C17 Carved, 164 mm can also be used on MTB, does it offer comfort like a road bike?
I can't help I'm afraid as I never use a MTB 👍
Yeah, that’s my issue with the mini pumps. You can’t determine what your pressure is. This is a great review. Thank you. In one of your recent videos you had stopped and let someone borrow your manual pump. I guess this could’ve been handy. :)
The only time it felt too warm was when I was testing for the number of consecutive tyre inflations it could do and felt too warm after 3 but that of course is a situation you will never encounter in reality
