RIDE TO THE SUN 2024 - A MEMORABLE 1ST EVER NIGHT RIDE
I love a challenge and i enjoy Sportives but one thing I'd never done was ride a bike in the dark. My front light might as well be still in it's box.
That's why Ride to the sun appealed to me - something new and different and my god what an enjoyable quirky and memorable ride it turned out to be.
I urge you to get to their website and put your name down for next year's 10th edition of this FREE event

I'm not sure how I was talked into doing one of the toughest Sportives in England as part of my recovery from surgery and a long lay off. We entered the May 19th event back in January when it seemed like a good idea. With my lack of fitness becoming increasingly obvious as we entered Spring, I told the group I was definitely NOT doing it....... but I am a sucker for peer pressure. Anyway, the d...

EVERYONE IS LEAVING ZWIFT - REALLY ??

If you are a user of the indoor cycling platform Zwift, you'll know already of the rather big price increase. Very true words. I am 77 and riding very happily and reasonably strongly now. But it took me seven months of carefully increased effort (starting on an indoor trainer) to get back from a hip replacement four years ago. Adding small increments and taking time to "smell the flowers" along the way is the key.

I maybe in the minority, but I hope not, but Zwift (given I ride on it at least 3 times a week as part of my Training Peaks training programme) is great value even after the price increase. I get from it exactly what I want (I don’t race or take part in Group Rides other than those organised by my Cycle Club or Training Group when the weather is not conducive for a Club Ride.). I’m an annual subscription and use it year round.

I’m in this camp, I’m in the software business and I see this a lot where the value is not seen by the general public. It’s costly to add features, fix bugs and generally run a system in servers etc. I’m also of the mind I’d prefer a stepped approach to a price increase. I use Zwift 2 to 3 times a week in summer and 4 to 5 in winter so per 90 session is decent value.

If you have a rim with a dip in the middle, so a smaller diameter, as your tyre tightens up on fit or removal make sure the bead is pushed into it. Makes life so much easier. Same with old motorbike tyres.

I am riding FulGaz more and more lately. It can be a bit glitchy, but as a solo rider, the scenery and chance to ride all over the world is great. It also feels more real, I find myself moving on the bike in corners or going through dips like I would outdoors. I also like that it has some longer flat rides for recovery days. I swear if I ride Tempus Fugit one more time I’ll scream. I’ve hung onto Zwift, but I am starting to question why.

The problem is that Zwift is no longer synonym for indoor cycling. For me, indoor cycling is worth 100+ $$ per winter month, but I don't need Zwift to push the pedals. With the main struggle of the competition being lack of user base, Zwift should have rather reduced the price to ensure maintaining the monopole. People finding an alternative are not coming back. I think. We'll see. Upping the price step by step would not have been better, I am afraid. People would scream: "Zwift increasing the price for the 10th time in 10 years?!?"

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head with your points in this video. Having been on Zwift since November 2017 I have never bothered to cancel my subscription during the summer months, allowing me to use it when the occasional day reminds us the British summer weather can represent all 4 seasons within 24 hours! So, for the first time I have paused my membership for the next few months which will easily compensate for the price increase and have now set up a free MyWhoosh account to cover for those rainy days. Admittedly, it lacks the interaction and visual quality and smoothness of Zwift but for the handful of days I will use it over the coming months it will suffice. It would be interesting to know, how many people like myself, had never bothered to pause their membership previously but are now doing so? Until now Zwift has cost me £156 per year but now, even if I only cancel for June,July, August & September I will only pay £144 per year. I don’t doubt that I will return to Zwift in the autumn and at the same time will have the added bonus of exploring any new roads and features that are due to roll out over the next few months. Win! Win!

My main issue with the 1030 is that unlike my previous 520, it doesn't have the audible beep tones at the start of a strava segment, or when I reach my 10 mile laps etc. Does the 1040 have the audible beep tones that I miss? Great video. I just ordered a 1040. I have a 204 mile event coming up. I have 2 questions. Re power guide. Does it take/accept a goal time and then adjust effort based on reaching that goal? And if the start of the ride, because it’s a bunch start and there are significant drafting advantages versus the end when at mile 150+ you are on your own, does it adjust power goals so that if the beginning of the ride is easy and you are ahead of your goal, it can adjust your power guide to still meet that time goal. Vice versa if you go real hard in the beginning and are overshooting the power goals, does it adjust down the remaining goals so you don’t bonk. I’m wondering if this is similar to the pacepro feature runners get on their Garmin watch.

I'm guessing a bit here as I don't personally use the power guide. You can swipe up from the bottom of the screen during the ride , so I imagine in that scenario you would begin with an easier power average and once the drafting has ceased, swipe up and slide the slider to the right so the unit increases the required power you need to ride for the remainder of the event. I do use the stamina screen on events like this personally which helps me make effort adjustments during the event so I don't blow up - sorry i couldn't be more helpful 👍

And, how was the saddle? The Brooks Cambium?

It has performed really well. The nature of 14 days in a row means that everyone is feeling a bit sore but on previous saddles I'd be worse and suffer for a long time after - not with this saddle 😁

How do you find navigation with Edge devices? I have a few concerns compared to phones. 1) maps are not detailed and colourful. When you zoom out you don't see what's around, whats a path or a hill as opposed to phone apps. 2) you cannot add a via point. You can click a point and make it a destination, fine but when you want to add a detour via another point, you have to finish that route and start a new one. I don't think it's that complicated. 3) having to fiddle with the orientation is also clumsy. It's wither North up or direction up. sure you can pinch and rotate but the whole thing is super slow. I have a Fenix 7 and i very badly want a dedicated head unit but I always end up using my phone. (yeah, it drains faster, less robust and weather proof)

Hi, I guess on your first point , Garmin are balancing map detail against battery life, which is what people seem to want. more colourful detailed maps constantly being redrawn on a ride would deplete the battery quick like with your phone. Point 2 - you certainly can't add anything to a route once you've started it but if it helps, I explain how you can add via points galore when planning a route at 6.10 on this video ua-cam.com/video/wTOONQ7PzkU/v-deo.html Point 3 , I cant see any way round that but to be honest it's horses for courses and not something I've even thought about myself. You do refer to "Edge Devices" in general and i will say that the processor upgrade on the 1040 is huge and redrawing when you rotate isn't slow like on earlier edge devices I hope some of this is helpful 👍😁

@@OrdinaryBlokeOnABike Yeah, it kinda makes sense. I hardly ever follow a course. I often improvise. Adding a point as "via" shouldn't be a big deal for a mapping and navigation company. The other points are valid, detailed maps and tiles would indeed be more storage, battery and even CPU.
