Being alone in another country, no matter if this is for a vacation of a week or to work and live for a year, will help you getting to know yourself, and with personal growth. You will be forced out of your comfort zone to break certain patterns, such as shyness, people pleasing, or not speaking up for yourself. It also helps you to trust your intuition, open up to other people, and with your faith. Because often a lot of uncertainty comes up if you take off alone to work abroad, but also if you go traveling alone.
When I left my home country (the Netherlands), I didn’t have much experience of solo traveling or working abroad. I took off with less than €1000,- saved, so my book also shows that it’s really possible if you would like to go ahead and work in other countries. But even if you just like to go solo traveling for a week in another country, my book can help you too. I share many travel tips by demonstrating how I traveled to certain countries alone.
In Safety Stop, I show you how I ended up working and living abroad. I worked in Spain (the Canary Islands), the Dominican Republic, Mexico, the Maldives, New Zealand and Australia. In between, I also did a lot of female solo traveling to countries such as Egypt, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and the Philippines. In many countries I worked as a diving instructor, but I have also been waitressing, worked as a receptionist in holiday resorts in Spain, as front of the house manager in a café in New Zealand and worked in an office in Australia.
It all started with a solo female trip to Egypt when I was 23 years old. Later on, I also have been solo female traveling to Thailand and Malaysia and returned as a solo traveler to Sri Lanka, the Philippines, and the Maldives. I also worked freelance in Thailand, and in the Maldives where I was the only European girl on a local island. I also traveled alone to the Portuguese islands of Madeira, Porto Santo, and Sao Miguel Island in the Azores. And I backpacked all over the Canary Islands alone. But this will come in a follow-up book.
