Gone But Not Gone
Canada
Приєднався 2 лис 2024
Original songs on my main video menu. I post short covers in my Shorts section. Music is just a fun hobby for me, nothing serious, therapeutic. A good way to pass the days. I relate to “outsider music” and think of myself in this genre. Messy, scatter-brain productions, all mostly quick 1-or-2 takes. I like the songwriting process, but I don’t like performing my songs. I do so by necessity and do like to mess around with studio production.
I also have a channel called Aether Pavilion (@AetherPavilion), where I do mostly ambient/experimental music.
I enjoy languishing in the margins of UA-cam because it affords relative anonymity and solace, which allows more artistic freedom. I’m not here for the analytics; and certainly not here for monetization or noteriety. I have no illusions as to my station in life. Music is an important part of culture and I’m doing my small part to contribute.

There's always a temptation in songwriting and production to fix that last thing you think needs fixing. That fix leads to another, and before you know it, you've edited it into oblivion and what remains is a sterile, well polished bit of nothing. I tend to prefer the raw first takes of my songs because of the amount of human element, an element that is increasingly scarce in today's tech/AI dr...

Rough demo 1. I wish I could find a good singer, preferably female, to sing this one. I tend to write my songs with just about any other performer than myself in mind. I perform them by necessity. The only reason I tend to multiple-track my vocals via harmony is to try and hide the weakness. You're absolutely right. Great choice and great job at it. I agree with you. Visions of Johanna has got to be right there in my top 5 Dylan favorites.❤
Thanks. And yeah, hard to single out one as his best. My opinion changes through time. But I keep coming back to this one. Others I think of as his greatest, It’s Alright Ma, Desolation Row, Gates of Eden and more recently Not Dark Yet, among others. Put the music aside, I can read these as poems and say they are some of the best poems of the last century. There will never be another like him.
So when I launched this channel, I drew a hard line in the sand when it came to cover songs. None to be posted in my main, long-form video menu. Only original songs. I opted for a compromise, allowing myself to do short excerpt covers in my Shorts menu. The thing about covers is they are bit like drugs. They are awesome, and If you do too many of them, you get hooked. And I didn’t want to become another of the thousands of prosaic UA-cam musician channels that do the same covers over and over and over. That said, if I ever break my posting rule and upload a full cover to my main video page, this one is a candidate. I have recorded the entire epic. Not easy to do in one take. It is, in my opinion, Dylan’s finest work as a songwriter. And it truly does deserve full version play.
The clock ticks, the page turns, and a chapter ends. In "It's Time To Leave," a farewell ascends. A melody of memories, both sweet and deep, As we bid adieu to dreams we used to keep. Your music is simply breathtaking. Your voice, the lyrics, the performance - everything is so perfect and moving. Your music always touches my soul. Your voice is like a balm to my ears. Your lyrics are so profound and meaningful. Thank you for sharing your talent with us.
@@IntraMoeniaArt Bless you.
Love the poetry of these lyrics. The acoustic guitar adds a special depth.
@@RoseAkerman Thanks.
Beautiful and sad. ❤❤
@@RoseAkerman I’m actually a pretty happy guy generally, but I enjoy drawing from the well of sadness and heartbreak when it comes to songwriting. I’ll try and do more happy stuff in the new year. 😂
@ sad lonely and miserable works so well though…😂
@ It’s a tried and tested strategy, ain’t it. Political, topical, satire songs come and go, but broken hearts, lost souls and human suffering will always be the staples of art. Even Dylan recognized this as early as 1964, and turned his back on the protest singer trends he had so marvellously helped forge. Does anyone really remember Phil Ochs? 😀
❤❤
😢😢
I hope it didn’t bring you down too much. I really appreciate you taking the time to listen. Thanks.
@@GoneButNotGone The lyrics just.... Made me remind me of someone 🙂 Some unexpressed love.... You know.....
@@adelthebo I hear you. Have a good and happy holiday season.
Your music transports me to another world. Thank you for these emotions!
@@IntraMoeniaArt A humbling compliment. I will be reworking this song and will post the full version soon. It’s a sort of homage to all the unknown musicians who quietly live out their dream on UA-cam. The misfits and outsiders who never found their place in the world, but find a quiet place on platforms like this to say the things they never had a chance to say in their offline worlds.
@@GoneButNotGone We're a big bunch, and we should be on TV! Talent shows decide who's a musician now? That's a bummer. I miss the good old days more and more. I still rock out to music from the '70s. What will kids listen to in the future? They're missing out big time. Again, great job! And if we don't chat before then, Merry Christmas. Cheers!
@ I’ll send you a Christmas email in the next couple days so I can say a bit more than I want to say here.
@GoneButNotGone Just what I wanted 👍
A Sleepwalkers classic! Love it. 😌
Not anymore. Sleepwalkers sold his rights to me, so now a Gone But Not Gone anti-classic!
@@GoneButNotGone 😀
Yup! It's great just the way it is. Music made by a talented human. 😀
Flattery will get you somewhere, sometimes. Funny, but listening to a lot of of classic albums from the 70s, Elton John among them, and you can really hear the imperfections in all their glory. Little tempo irregularities (they used real drummers, not click tracks back then). And it just makes it so more relatable compared to today’s perfect, vapid pop music.
@GoneButNotGone Very true! This pitch correction trend has gone crazy, as well. It sucks the soul out of vocals. Have a good one, Peter - I'll catch you in the New Year! 🥳
@ Have a great holiday. See you next year.
Currently doing a remix of the full version, coming soon to my main video page. The song title: Bedroom Songwriter Superstar. I come across so many on UA-cam, and they all have a story.
So much potency.. DONT F ..IT ! Keep it real and crude.. ❤❤🫵🏻💯💯❤️🙋🏼♂️
Whos doing that cover
That’ll be me. All covers on this page are by me. Thanks for listening.
@GoneButNotGone well that's a fine job you did
@ Thanks very much. I did the full version, and maybe in future I’ll post it. But for now I’m only posting original songs to my main long form video page. Have a good holiday season, without too much darkness.
@@GoneButNotGone you too.. keep on keeping on
Your voice is like a balm for the soul. This song has deeply moved me. The lyrics are poetic and touching. You've managed to express such intense emotions! Amazing as always!!!!
Marcus, thank you. But more importantly, I just your IntraMoenia.Art eulogy. I was moved by it. I wanted to comment, but don’t want to draw attention to myself, so I’ll wait until there are a few comments first. This UA-cam music thing is a series of journeys, isn’t it? Different for each person, but we all share a common bond as creators.
@@GoneButNotGone Don't worry, P! By the way, you're one of the people I wanted to give a special mention to in this text. I hope you understand!
@ 100% understand.
@@GoneButNotGone 👍😉
I say keep the Fi as low as possible!😂seriously, really like it!!
@@RoseAkerman Agreed, the lower the better for this type of music. It’s why I’ve always loved outsider musicians like Daniel Johnston. There’s an organic quality. Same with those old field recordings of the delta blues, Appalachian mountain music, Carter Family. No reverb, filters or studio tricks, just raw music that stands the test of time.
@@GoneButNotGone gotta keep the soul!!!!
Beautiful song and visuals 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
@@maxwashingtonmusic7000 Don’t get many comments around these parts, so appreciate them all the more when they arrive. Thanks very much.
Great song and performance! Reminds me of Tom Waits. Nice High Noon reference. Great movie from The Coop! 🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵✨✨✨✨✨
@@maxwashingtonmusic7000 Thanks, man. Appreciate you taking time to listen. High Noon, I just remember the tense but slow pace and the clocks. And it all happening in real time.
Nice song writing P. The recording is very nicely done. Fills the room. I was expecting some whistling in the song but your harmonica playing fills the void nicely.
I know, whistling needed. I can’t whistle. Damn. 😮Thanks for listening.
That explains it 😙 🎶 I do enjoy the harmonica
@ If this song gets 1994 views, I’ll look about hiring a session whistler and doing a new version. 🤔
The spilled coffee year ☕️ 1994
@ I was thinking your old Silvertone would have sounded lo-fi great through the mic with some reverb in this song.
I'm not a shorts person, but for you, I'd make an exception. Any day. Haha
Thanks. In truth, I don’t like the whole concept of UA-cam Shorts. It further destroys attention spans, promotes addictive scrolling, and from a musician point of view, not the best medium for anything other than self-promotion. But it’s a tool to be used. I want to use it less in future. I’m also not really liking these short, partial covers versions I’m posting because the songs deserve full version treatment. But I made a hard rule for this channel: no covers on my main long video page. So my Shorts covers is a compromise. I may start putting full cover versions in my main video page. Thinking about it. If I do that, I will stop doing as many shorts.
@@GoneButNotGone Don't get me wrong, you're absolutely right to do it... I should really get around to doing it myself. I just never seem to find the time! That's just how things are nowadays, people don't have much time to spare. I can see it with my own videos, not many people watch them all the way through. We're from a different generation, my friend.
I hear you.
@@GoneButNotGone I know 😉
In a world facing its demise, this song becomes a sanctuary. It's a reminder that even when everything else crumbles, the power of music, love, and friendship can offer solace and hope. A truly beautiful and resonant piece.
@@IntraMoeniaArt Thank you, as always.
haha!!!! The contrast between the somber music and pace, and the hillarious lyrics is priceless!!
@@RoseAkerman 👍✌️
Great song!😎👍
Thanks for listening.
Couple of typos in the text, and I can’t sing, but who cares when it’s the end of the world. Time to make a final beer run….
I can relate to writing with another singer in mind. Don't sell yourself short, though - this is a wonderfully authentic performance - both vocals and piano. Really beautiful poetic imagery here.
@@RoughGuessMusic Thanks, man. A bit more positivity and love is gonna shine through in the New Year! With or without my baritone sandpaper nasal vocals.
@GoneButNotGone Right on! Cheers, Peter. 😄🍻
Ahh... this is a beautiful respite from the crazy season. Really lovely music.
@@RoughGuessMusic Thank you, Tim. This was one of those songs that just naturally flowed out spontaneously while noodling around in the open C tuning I love so much. I was actually working to refine my song Memory Ghost, same tuning, slightly similar chord/picking patterns, but decided on something new. You have a safe and peaceful holiday season. I know people get busy and stressed this time of year, so never feel obliged to stay up to date with my postings, but always appreciate it when you listen/comment.
@@GoneButNotGone It's always great to hear your latest musical projects - something I look forward to. Hope you have a wonderful holiday season as well! 😀🎄
Amazing!!!! There's something truly magical about music. It can evoke a wide range of emotions, from joy and excitement to sadness and nostalgia. It's a powerful tool that can heal, inspire, and unite us.
Graci, amico. This was a very interesting song to write. It came from a rather spontaneous flow state. I realized after finishing that it had possible meanings I hadn’t intended. And I leave it to the listener to interpret. I really love the open C guitar tuning I used here.
@@GoneButNotGone I believe that the true essence of a great musician is precisely this: to make music and then let the listener experience it according to their own interpretation and emotions. I congratulate you once again and I'm truly happy to have found you :)
@ Many thanks.
Great song and great video!!
Thanks Rose, I really appreciate your comment.
@ do I know you? Is your name Peter?
@ Bingo! This is he. The one formerly known as Songs for Sleepwalkers. I retired that persona a few months back, wasn’t sure I would return, and went with the Dylan strategy of reinventing myself. 🤫
@ great to see you back! I missed your music!
@@RoseAkerman I appreciate that.
Very moving. I love it.
Thanks.
Better walking away, than the cold dark hands of death.
Really interesting comment. It never occurred to me when I wrote this that it might be interpreted as being about actual death. But yeah, I can see why some might see it that way. I’m still working in the song so I’m gonna think more about this. Thank for the comment.
I had some time to finish this song, so the full version is on my main video page. Thanks for dropping by.
This is truly beautiful. The piano work is stunning, the lyrics are poignant, and your vocals are incredibly expressive. You've created something truly special with 'Walk On Through'. I can definitely hear a female vocalist bringing a unique dimension to this song, but your performance is captivating as well. Keep creating amazing music!
@@IntraMoeniaArt Very helpful comment, thanks. There are a couple glitches in the piano part, but overall I’m happy with how this plays out. I wonder how this would sound in Italian? Sometimes I think about translating to a different language.
@@GoneButNotGone It's often said that English is better suited for singing, but I'm curious to explore that myself. I have a good voice - my mother was a soprano and would have loved for me to follow in her footsteps - but I'm extremely shy on stage. In fact, even recording myself makes me uncomfortable (lol).
@ Wow. I’d like to hear you sing. I have a baritone that sounds like like it’s filtered through cigar smoke and rough sandpaper. If you ever want to translate one of my songs and sing it, I. A send you the music mp3 file.
This one really needs a singer who can sing, so if you are out there and want to take a crack at it, leave a comment. If you play piano, I can walk you through the very simple progression.
Love it!
@@RoseAkerman Rose, good to see your comment. I have been gone, but not really gone. After retiring my Songs for Sleepwalkers persona, I created this. But I’m aiming to keep a relatively low profile this time and won’t be playing the engagement game as much. Just focused on the songs, not the analytics. I’ll pop by your channel incognito and see what you’ve been up to when I have time.
Howdy folks, some of these classics really deserve more than short, abridged, single-verse versions, and I’d love to do the full versions, but I’m trying to keep my main video section for original songs only. Maybe that will change in future and I’ll toss in the odd full cover version. Example, I recorded the full version of Dylan’s “Visions of Johanna” (a long one) and it would seem almost disrespectful to post only a single verse of that. Thanks for visiting my page.
😢
Thanks for listening.
My Canuck heart proudly beats! Apparently the northern lights were spectacular at times in the Maritimes this fall, but I managed to miss them somehow (although a bud in Texas saw them, somehow). Love the song! 🍁
@@RoughGuessMusic There a lot to write about in this great nation. More Canadian content sure to come. I’m slowly transferring over my favourite tracks from Sleepwalkers channel, and am quietly hiding the versions there. I’ll probably quietly delete that channel if I finish the process. The Aurora lights, I saw and heard them when I worked a couple seasons up north years ago. They emit a low frequency hum. Rather eerie and beautiful. Thanks for the comment.
Sounds wonderful. I visited in 1992 the spot where Lennon was assassinated.
@@bigb2020 Many have made that pilgrimage. I may too if I ever get to NYC again.
John Lennon was senselessly killed 44 years ago today, December 8, 1980. Keep resting in peace, John.
In every piece you create, I sense a profound depth of reflection. It's your unique signature. Nothing seems accidental; it's as if everything is already composed in your mind. I admire your innate ability and aspire to one day match your artistry. My early works were concrete, but now they feel almost dysfunctional. Thankfully, I have you as a guiding light.
Very good observation. Every detail in this is indeed intentional, planned and orchestrated for effect. It’s as much performance art as it is a simple song. When you don’t have many people watching your channel, there’s a bit more freedom to take risks and experiment. Thanks for your insightful comment.
@@GoneButNotGone Better few but good... What do we do with those who only pretend to listen hahaha!!!
@ Well, I stopped worrying about things I have no control over. Just make music, have fun, and try not to get distracted by the algorithm forces.
If you know what’s going on in this track, you’ll appreciate the ironic twist on imposter syndrome at play. There are a couple of obvious clues in some transition points. If you have clue what I’m talking about, leave a comment and I’ll be happy to divulge the illusion. 😅
A classic - glad to hear it! That outro refrain hits perfectly. Love that IImaj to IV change in the outro - gives the song a very triumphant feel! 😀🎸
Thanks for noticing that. I tried to clean up the chorus a bit more without doing it over. Ideally I’d want a Motown backup singer ensemble (like the Stones had for some of their songs), and more driving electric guitars reaching that shooting star crescendo before it falls at the end. Maybe a horn section, too. 😆
@@GoneButNotGone That would be awesome! 🎺
Fantastic... I'm going to listen to right away😊
Unfortunately I’m not doing full cover versions in my main video page, but the best full version is by the master himself, Townes Van Zandt. If you search the song title there are lots of his studio and live versions available. It’s also a song covered by many other artists. Many believe Townes is America’s greatest songwriter. He passed away in the 1990s. About a year before he passed, I had a ticket to see him live in Vancouver but the day of the show his tour bus got stopped at the Canada-US border and Canada officials denied him entry to Canada because of his past drug offenses. So there was no show. I was so disappointed. But his music lives on.
Are you Canadian ? Love the lyrics and delivery . Keep creating
Yep, Canuck here. Thanks for your encouragement.
@ if you’re on the west coast . Van or van island and ever do a show let me know
@ Thanks for that. My live days are far in the past, just a hobby now to keep me out of trouble. And ya, born and raised on the West Coast. I don’t get many visitors at this channel, so when I get a couple comments like yours, much appreciated. Thanks again.
That was awesome!!
Thanks for stopping by for a listen.
Peace and love brother 🙏💖
✌️Thank you.
Hello, I do short, abridged covers of my favourites and put them in my Shorts section. My full length original songs are all in the main video section. Thanks for dropping by.
Beautiful and elegant. Great job! I have a channel of my own and can relate to this style. So if you'd like please check out my songs too and let me know what you think.
Much appreciated. Will check your channel a bit later. Thanks for the comment.
I don’t do topical, political songwriting as a general rule, mostly because it doesn’t interest me, and you end up just preaching to the converted and losing 50% of the people who otherwise like your music; I ain’t here to convert no one to nothing. And this song is nowhere near a protest song. I’m a fan of irony, and was struck with a bolt of irony over how a pop classic from 1964 could sound so different in today’s urban world, simply by inserting a few real images of today’s downtown. I try to stay clear of divisive discourse, but sometimes I have to pause and ask: how the hell did we allow it to get to this point? I think all people of all political persuasions can agree on that base question.
It’s a bit uneven and rough, but I enjoyed making it. I struggle with rhythm at times, which is why I wish I had a drummer and bass player on board for songs like this that were written for a four of five piece rock band in mind. I always loved the big outro choruses in classic rock. So this is my outsider musician homage to that.
Food for thought, for sure. Your piano sets an appropriate, pensive tone. And I agree - your cold-affected voice suits the song well (although I hope you're on the mend). Suicide is a bit of a taboo subject, and it really should be talked about more openly - it's a tragedy that touches so many families. The retrospective "what ifs" torment to no end, and can be an agonizing and unfruitful path for remaining loved ones to tread. There's definitely merit in society looking for ways to prevent suicide, though, and to ask those "what if" questions prospectively. Mental health and addiction is complex, as you say, and perhaps there are situations where therapy has been unsuccessful and self medication is required in order to prevent self harm or suicide. Lots to think about in your song. Hope you're feeling better soon! 👋😀
@@RoughGuessMusic Thank you for your thoughtful words. I agree that this taboo subject deserves more open discussion, from all angles, including the uncomfortable angles. Even so, I’m a bit uneasy posting this so close to the holiday season (a thought that occurred to me after). I had set a general rule for my main page that I won’t be posting more than one song per week. I broke that rule and posted a touched up Shooting Star simply because I didn’t want What If? to linger at the top of my feed for too long. One of my goals moving forward is to move into more emotionally neutral terrain with subject matter; I tend to dwell a bit much on sadness and melancholy. Thanks again for your measured thoughts.
