Learn Science by doing.
Приєднався 18 кві 2012
To learn, requires admitting you do not know as a necessary first step.
All my life I have found the best method of learning, to be hands on direct experience, or personal mentorship, rather than unquestioned acquisition of traditional theory and method, as useful as these tools are.
For me, the rigid school classroom of the 1980s seemed like an inadequately paced environment for one truly interested in the creative pursuit of knowledge.
What skills have been gained in engineering and Science here are largely self-taught, and what training I did receive was due to the generosity of those giants who allowed me passage up to their shoulders.
I strive to maintain the Humility required to continue learning, and not become mentally stagnant.
Problem solving free from fear of praise/blame dichotomy can be a path to skill.
Doing math and reading books is fun, remember? This is a non-monitized non-profit endeavor.
Goodwill to all beings on Earth and elsewhere.
Best wishes to all!

Testing out a Bohm Stirling Engine I just received from my pal Dan. Thanks for the fun project Dan. Great find! This engine runs fine with a butane flame at the proper distance from the rear of the displacer cylinder, which is brass and around 1/2 inch in diameter (I have not checked it on a caliper yet). It does however, seem to have a window of oscillation, which is dependant on staying withi...

A friend found this nice Stirling Engine/car but was having trouble getting it to start. I had him send it to me, with the idea I could probably get it running if I stripped it down to its essential components, simplify, and get the actual engine itself oscillating before debugging the car's system of belt drive bands. That is exactly what I did, and simply removed the alcohol burner and aimed ...

Cool looking model
Smiles, I'm like there is no way he is going to fit that coax into that sweet radio looking like it has just come out of the bottom of the sea and you did lol, but yes it really does sound sweet.
I think you may have discharge from your antenna might want to shorten it
I saw old caps ! Have you recapped it? K4EAA has the kits and t shooting info
Had a 1988 SVT ll (non-pro) in a SVR-215 cab. Relatively local guy sold his lll (non-pro) in a SVR-212 cab for a good price. ABed them, and then let the ll (non-pro) go. The lll isn't as loud as the 300 all tube watts, but the differences in overall tone was negligible. I now run it through a radial cab mate at 8 ohms 200W into both the SVR-212 and SVR-215. Im so glad I no longer have to hump that 100lb ll (non-pro) around anymore. The short lived non-pros are vastly superior to the 2 pro and 3 pro series that came later. The preamp circuit is exactly like the original late 60s SVT channel 1, except it uses common 12ax7 preamp tubes (unlike the originals which use rare 12dw7). Cheers.
Hi, what is that wire that shows corona in the circuit?
That wire is an antenna, which provides feedback from the secondary e-field. This way there is a feedback loop running which keeps the primary driver circuitry in tune in real time.
88C-1 is in the wrong place, isn't it?
Be careful running without the governor. You could get a runaway! 😉
I had the 950SDX, there was a hole in the top to drop your tool through for adjustment. Nowadays, that is one of the first things I look for in a rig, how sidetone volume is adjusted.
Is the amp ready?
Hi, have you schematic of the amplifier? Sounds really good.
I just bought one of these. I'm having a problem. The amp seems to randomly cut out completely or randomly go to very low volume and then come back to normal. I checked to make sure my cables weren't bad. My setup is: fender jazz bass > Ampeg SVT-III Non-Pro > Ampeg 210AV cab speaker (which is a "practice" cab rated for 8 ohms / 200 watt). Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
Take it to a tech
Thats one spider that you would want in your garden or field nice work on the video!
Dude, you should make a hydrogen burner for your Willesco Steam train...pipe the flame in through copper tubing and design a nozzle that goes up under the boiler. Don't forget a stop valve (1 way) on the input for safety. ...and of course do all this outdoors.
I have two TS-850s(at) they have a wonderful front end, i had to replace one of the rigs carrier board. The leaky caps wiped out a lot of traces, i have found out that a TS-450 will match up ( according to a a few friends that had the same problem) i had something similar where a fellow ham donated a good (almost new) carrier board that was a original TS-850s , i installed all new caps on the donated board as well. I hope that you got it fixed up by now. These old rigs are worth putting some work into. And they perform almost as good as my modern DSP equipped rigs. Actually i think that they actually sound better than the modern rigs when equipped with the mechanical filters installed. Sometimes they seem to be almost magical because they amaze me . I wanted a TS-850s when they were brand new, but i was in my early 20s and just didn't have the money. As for running CW , these 850s are dyed in the wool CW radios.
Yes. I don't have a lot of KNWD experience but so many friends are big fans. I have seen many TS-850S with missing fluorescent display sections, and am aware of that common failure. The TS-520 with its solid state rx and tube finals does indeed feel magical. I'll probably buy another one in the future as I sold two parts 520 at Dalton, GA hamfest last year. Just too many radios, too little time, plus mine lacked the cw filter. I reallyvdo enjoy bug sending on the 520 via grid block keying. Happy hamming! KI4DBK
@ki4dbk my primary rig is a Yaesu FTdx-3000d and is probably my legacy rig. It's amazing too, plus I have an now old Icom ic-746pro , I know what you mean about too many rigs, not enough time. All of these are plenty of radio for me. I started hamming with an old Heathkit HW101 and two Heathkit "lunchbox" rigs back in the late 70s & early 80s so these new rigs ( to me) are more than enough, especially my 3000 its like going from driving a car to flying the space shuttle lol! These older superhet receivers are ( to me) the bees knees. It's up to old goats like me to keep them running
@l.a.2646 : I am 50 years young this year, but I prefer boat anchor work now, as my eyes are already shot and prefer point to point soldering and pouring through 1940s RCA Victor tube manuals. I've built the schematics in the back, have a tube stash at home, and am a 100% self taught maker/engineer. Thank you for commenting. 😊
@@brettmiller5443that's fantastic! , I'm 54 and I know what you're saying about vision troubles. It's great that you keep those radios running. With my tube equipment, my troubles are finding and keeping the tubes at the ready , I lost most of my tube -radios& test equipment in a bad divorce, her brother wanted it. Tube gear was how I cut my teeth with electronics, plus my old man ( WW2 generation- he was 51 when I was born) was a self taught technician -radios and TVs had a lot of tube test gear and he had boxes full of parts, so I was able to learn from him and keep my stuff running. Keep it going! One Heartbreaker for me is, my kids have no interest in my radios or test equipment. 73
Wow, that comment to below was really funny. But not if you're a bot.
I realize this was a rather weak filming job. What can I say, the fun and excitement displaced any care about video or editing quality. Yay!
OMG!❤ how freaking COOL !!♡
Oooh! The leakage 😢 but... that beautiful sound when it DOES run!!♡ just wonderful
@wild-radio7373 I am going to have to redo the brazing on the bottom of the copper shunt/patch. It's easy for it to get dirty since oil and h20 bubble up from the cylinder/piston assembly. I'll have to de-grease, dry and re-score, sand. Tnx for your observations and in engineering, criticism is *GOOD*.
are those TO-220 chips next to the IGBTs an external body diode?
Yes, they are high speed diodes, such that they can stop a polarity reversal faster than most chunks of Si. Cant recall the part number, but i think i salvaged them from old PC power supplies.
I have the x100b head and a xv112e combo. I love the old Carvin Amps. The ones I would never part with. Had my head since 1988 when I bought it new.
My friend Dan did some research on the internet and determined this vehicle is the Bohm Stirling Car A1, available at: www.boehm-stirling.com/en/
Oh man!!♡♡♡ this is so freaking COOL!🥰🔥🔥🔥👍
Thanks. I got this great engine from my pal Dan, who spotted it at a yard sale. After some searching on the net, it turned out to be a bohm still available at: www.boehm-stirling.com/en/ I should add, that the manufacturer does not recommend adding oil to pre-assembled units. For kits, they recommend a specific oil.
OMG!! COOL🔥🔥🔥🥰🤌👍
Thanks. For sure these are fun. I'm now highly motivated to design more of my own, after getting my feet wet on a few simple soda can Stirling builds a few years ago. Time to start saving up for a metal lathe, or at least a small hobby lathe. 👍
We made this up spontaneously that day around 2012 when I was playing around with RGB lasers. My pal Robert decided to pour C02 steam from a plastic bottle where chunks of dry ice 🧊 were undergoing sublimation. Suddenly a beautiful psychedelic display ensued, and we later started doing RGB "time tunnel" displays for our friends, which resulted in thousands of morphing beautiful chaotic color change. Those were great times. Thanks Robert for all your enthusiasm and creativity, rest in peace.
Now you can donate it to me. 🙂
I donated it to another ham and he sold it. I do have the 3 cw filters available for trade or sale. They may end up at my table at the next hamfest "boneyard"
@@ki4dbk I would not do that.....someone gives you something...you hang onto it.
My 850S has lots of good audio. You may have some bad/leaky electrolytic caps in the audio section, which is a known issue with the 450S and 850S and likely other KW rigs from that era...
Sure would like to know how this turned out for you. I bought one of these in 1992 and it's been my workhorse ever since. Back in 2000 I had some issues and Ampeg had me ship it to them and they sent it back good as new. I've never had it open so I have found this video interesting.
I put Electro-Harmonix (rebranded SOVTEK?) 12ax7s in there and it rocks. Didn't have time to play bass much until some lately, this year, and my skills are improving. I got the cage pattern down on guitar after mostly being a rhythm guitarist over the years, and so some minimal scales on the bass are coming easy and I play with a pick. But the head sounds great through a 2x10 closed back.
Very cool my friend! Can't wait to try mine out!
It's pitiful that this got only 34 views.
BTW, DSP is a toneless joke...except some of those helix tones are truly impressive on Jonathan Cordy's site especially.....but they that dude has some crushing legato skills.

Tnx. Just something I learned to do back when before KM4BI was SK. Used a righ handed Vibroplex in each arm. I would like to get my hands on a left handed original standard, deluxe, or presentation..Blue Racer.
The Keyer here was a nice rare ATmega328P uController based project build by W5UXH and sold to me back in 2012. I am quite sure he quit building these a number of years ago. I am willing to teach people who have a real desire to learn the Morse. Contact me through Amateur Radio.
It looks like MINE! cool unit and it works too.
@Chaz: Yes!!! I was so fortunate to buy mine from a nice guy in Dalton, GA who had Xeroxed the original manual and included it in the 10 dollars he charged for the tester. When I got home, just as he had promised, it worked great on a 5881 I plugged in, then next a few 6V6's. The rolling paper tube/settings chart was mechanically intact, as well as the backlight lamp behind it. Thanks for sharing!!!!
@@ki4dbk Cheers on a great find
I have the X-50B same amp. Mine actually caught fire while playing it because of the tube sockets mounted to the pc board. Burnt up the board pretty good. I have a friend of mine is a amp tech. He hand wired everything, cut out the bad section of the board and mounted the tube sockets to the metal chassis. Been working great for 20 plus years. We did swap the EL34s for 6L6GC. They last way longer then the 34s. I have the matching 4x12 as well. I like the carpet on it lol, it's different from everything else. I've had mine since around 1992ish . Absolutely love these amps, very underrated!
Yeah. I have the project of putting porcelain octal sockets and point to point wiring on my 2nd carvin chassis on hold. Being doing more ham radio lately in my spare time than guitar/bass but it'll come back. Always does. I love the clean channel on those Carvin heads. It's decent as a bass amp too, and the slider E.Q. is nice to dial in your bass tone. I'm not surprised about that PCB getting smoked. Both my Carvin PCB's have scorched and darkened circuit boards.
@@ki4dbk honestly just mounting the on the chassis works wonders lol
Don’t know much about the electronics but I bought mine new and have never had an issue with it. 30 years of gigging. Perfect Ampeg sound. Just picked up a 4 pro so my 3 will be a spare…
Cool!!!!
What preamp tubes would you recommend when replacing?
I used electro-harmonix, but there are a plethora of 12ax7/12xxx audio preamp tubes you could use. Use your datasheet first, then your ears, imho.
CW filters are always a wise investment! You did just fine. I have a TS-450 and previously a TS-440 and in both I have the 500hz CW filter. Never tried the 270hz. If you ever mess around with CW contesting (like CQ WW DX- ARRL DX etc)., those filters will make all the difference in the world. Enjoy your 850 and 73!
Agreed. Thanks. It turned out a fellow I sold this to (with filters and all) sent it back, complaining about the tuner quitting. It worked for me but was making an awful racket. He had other complaints so I refunded the ham's money. At least I have those nice KNWD CW filters. I work 100% cw, but mostly rag chews and sprints. 73!!!
Thank you so much. I actually have passed this project to another ham friend who has traditionally been a bigger KNWD fan than myself, though I really enjoy my TS-520, at least when I'm in the mood to play the Vibroplex bugs around on the air. I always felt like the high voltage involved in grid block keying pretty much self cleaned oxidation off of the contacts of vintage bugs, and the ts-520 then has those nicely weighted punchy sounding dits.
@@ki4dbk thanks enjoyed your video. recently got a used 850SAT and the tuner is taking 90 seconds trying to find a match. I eventually just stop the tuning process. i'm not sure what's going on. also wondering how much difference the narrow CW filters make in addition to the 500 Hz ones. currently only have the 8.83 500 Hz CW filter installed.
1:47 CFO cameo!
🐓
That is quite the audio upgrade from the apparent junk stock audio output of the rig.
Yeah, but I think there is something wrong with the audio on my individual TS-850S. It could be the CAR. Board or some part of the audio amp. Seems to clip very early, even with the external speaker attached. With this Workaround, I can keep the knob at around 9 o'clock max and I have plenty of distortion free headroom (within the Yamaha's 40w power amp) plus bell like cw clarity.
Is that unfiltered?
It's full bridge rectification right off the mains (Variac 0 - 140vac) with 420uf of filtration. I was using a signal generator (set to sync TTL) into the enable pin of the gate drivers as an interrupter in this clip.
The installation was not done correctly.
"Correct-ness" wasn't the goal. Teaching myself how to build amplifiers is. Mission accomplished in spades. Yet, I would love to hear your criticism point by point. In engineering criticism is gold. Thanks in advance. There are many young people today who think criticism/negative feedback is bad. Every single one of them is wrong.
...looks like you have something nice going on with possibly an RK-71. No videos yet. Please share when you get the footage. Update: He never shared anything, and didn't back up his words with empirical evidence.
Very informative Brett, thanks!
I typed in the wrong value in the calculator in the video and skewed the result, but the method is sound. I'll redo this video soon.
Very nice! So clean and neat looking! I would be interested to see how a 6N1P and 6L6 would do in that.
Thanks. It's a first for me on getting all that working in a chassis. I may actually rewire the power supply, which is very sloppy imho, and also in too close proximity to the signal path. I may go back and install shielded wire (grounded on one side of shield) on the input, but it's only like a 1.5" run.
The 6N1P project I want to do is a Single Ended KT88 driven by that tube. Bluelab Electronics has a great 6n1p/kt88 build. That guy's a real pro.
Nice! I am definitely gearing up to build with some tubes real soon!
The restoration you're doing now of the reel to reel 2x6v6 amp is what I'm interested in via your work.
@@ki4dbk As soon as I get another POS NOS 6X5 I hope to continue on it's road to recovery and glory.
@@diydan-kd2ynd63Dan did you ever finish that thing with the new rectum fryer, oops I meant rectifier.
What a PITA! They really seems they were not thinking of CW ops when designing that radio.
It's a great radio, and I'm getting more excited about it every time I use it. I will probably get the 270hz filter next.
@@ki4dbk I'm glad you're warming up to it. You can't beat the price!
Any demo playing this? Thx
I'll be happy to make some of me strumming chords, since you're interested. However I am recapping the cheap filter Electrolytics with F&T's, soon...perhaps tonight. Wife willing and if I'm not too tired, I'll get that done and filmed and goof around with my Yamaha Pacifica "Strat" to test everything out. I may need to mic the cab for decent recording, as I made an Ampeg retubing video and played bass recording via Android and tripod, but audio quality was poor imho.
Thinking of buying one, but Hard to find clips about how they sound
Timmy - As soon as I get a 2x10 cab for mine in a month or two, I can make an audio clip for you with my sm58 and audacity/linux. I don't have a 350w cab currently and don't want to run mine with no load on the poweramp. If you want to send an sm57 (proper cab recording mic) and a loaner cabinet, I can make it this week. Yet, I have found, I can't purchase a guitar or bass amp based on a sound clip. I have to actually play through it for a while and crank it.
I got mine in 2003 and never looked back. It was used when I got it (obviously) and I used the crap out of it until Covid hit. No issues, clean Ampeg sound! I've run it through single 15" 8 ohm (200w), dual 15" 8 ohm (350w), a 4x10 8 ohm cab, a combination of 4x10 & 15" and have never had a problem. It's actually 200 watt & 350 watt, not 250 & 350. Also, since the output is solid state you do not need a speaker cabinet to work on it. That is only an issue with tube & output transformer setups. You also don't need a cabinet rated at 350 watts to use this. I have run it through a 50 watt speaker at low volumes for testing. I've been an amp tech since the mid 80s and a bass player since 1977.
@@jimolson2557 Yeah iam familiar with how solid state work, but the Ampeg cant run 2ohm right? I got two offers, a Ampeg SVT 3 and a sunn colliseum lead. Both are same price and will be for guitar driving two 15" elements at 1000w @ 4ohm. But sadly person that sells ampeg has sold speaker so cant try it before. Someone told me the sunn solid state would be better for guitar, but yeah both seems awesome. If using Ampeg as a "power amp unit" can you still use the EQ or are that prior to the FX return?
@@timmysvensson4902 - The EQ is for the preamp section, once it hits the power amp there are very few amps out there that use any type of tone controls in that section. And no, 2 ohm is not recommended for this amp. For a few minutes of testing it won't hurt anything though.
That's a toss-up too, both amps are good but I would prefer the Ampeg for bass. If you want clean and loud the Sunn is hard to beat.
Here's a novel idea: I really appreciate the freedom of the opposable thumbed primate who posited a thumbs down. How about having the attention span to stop and comment. The world would love to hear your insight when you evolve to the point of using language. ;-)
Can't believe this short little video has drawn so much interest. This is a common thing I do all the time.
Shorts get the most views for two reasons that i can guess: 1. Folks have destroyed their attention span via garbage like tiktok and twitter. 2. UA-cam forces a barrage of short content on their average user. But those are guesses. ....i remember trying Odyssey. Totally worthless, plus everything was broken and 99.9% of content was hypnogogic hallucinatory fodder for teen kooks on psychedelics.
