First Autocross of 2021 after a year and half of hibernation. Good enough for a Street Modified win and 13 out of 64 overall raw time. Kansas City Region SCCA. Turbo Duratec Focus banging the rev limiter across the finish line. I promise to clean the windshield before the next event. The car literally sat for a year and a half, charged the battery and added a quart of oil then took it out.

When i first understand the very basic idea of this system. The only word I can think of to describe it is... Elegance Simple, durable(no real gear shifts, no belts or frictional coupling surfaces), and does a lot more with a lot less parts. This system is a piece of art.
Do you have any videos of how the get rhe release bearing off the slave cylinder. I bought a clutch kit and it only has the blue part in it (release bearing) so i need to get the old one off but dont know exactly how thats done, cant find any videos on this
I still don’t understand what’s going on
1-3-4-2
This video saved by a tonne of cash. My shifter felt loose; nothing happened when I switched gears. Two shops told me to replace the unit altogether. flipped them over this video at the 1:37 mark, and was able to convince them it was the pin after all. $400, plus the cost of a new gasket & trans fluid, I was back on the road.
Great way to get a basic understanding of this system. I’ve been impressed by this system ever since I tried an ecvt PHEV. I thought I would hate it but actually it’s a great system. Hopefully when they change to the 1.5 turbo they can make the engine stay at 2-3000rpm in acceleration. The rev flare is the only Negative with the ECVT
How can the vehicle move in reverse direction using only the internal combustion engine? Thank you
@@aaliyan6969 in reverse all torque is supplied by MG2. The engine cannot provide torque to the wheels in reverse but it may be running to power MG1 as a generator.
@@davidpatience4682 But if a malfunction occurs in the electrical system of the hybrid vehicle, it turns the electrical system off, does that mean the vehicle can’t reverse?
@@aaliyan6969 Probably yes, but it's very rare to happen. In petrol car when engine breaks then you can't drive at all as well :)
What is the different between motor free and held? Does the motor have a “brake” to hold it still? How is that implemented?
what is your opinion on using ATF fluid in a MTX? it was very common to use this in the past and now i would need to use GL-4 oil? in winter it is -30C here and i would also like to save 100$ in oil. is it OK to use ATF?
I have used ATF. Depending on the year and application it was the recommended fluid in some cases. Other applications recommend MTF or "syncromesh" fluid which I prefer when available. I have not seen a recommendation for gl-4; I think it would be very stiff at -30.
@@davidpatience4682 alright thank you very much for your help! i was very worried at first, but since it looks like all the gears will be throughtly coated in oil it should be alright. ATF seems to be extremely stringent in its specs so if its coating the parts well i dont think there will be problems.
Fantastic crystal clear video, thank you
Is this the same transmission that's in the 1987-1995 ford f150?
This is the Ranger version. The F-150 is a similar design with slightly larger parts; case, bearings, gears, etc.
Y'all just had to use chains in the demo. The lack of chain belts in ecvt is what makes it robust.
I didn't make the model only the video. But the real unit has a chain too.
At speeds below 45 mph these are electric cars with gasoline assist. At speeds above 45 mph the electric motors work to make the gasoline engine do almost all of the work (at the optimum rpm and load, of course) And the gasoline engine can only assist in the forward direction. All reversing is from the big electric motor.
Toyota should really nave the eCVT differently. Everyone assumes that eCVT is CVT + electromotor. But this is just different.
It is a CVT...Only karens question Toyota's hybrid domination/expertise.
Fantastic video. Everything was explained clearly and the visual representation was helpful
What does output mean in the diagram?
Good video about gearbox.
The best explanation that I've see about this topic! Thank you so much!
The best part is that these transmissions do not have chains and are all gear driven which means they really last forever when maintained. My Honda Clarity has 180k miles and is still going strong.
And your Honda clarity doesn't use this system. Lol
How much power output is required by MG1 compared to the ICE over the full range of speeds? It looks like MG1 has a mechanical advantage over the ICE, so it will require less torque, but does that translate to less power? I'm having trouble wrapping my head around this.
So it has NO gears? Just combination of mg1, mg2 and engine RPM? It's difficult to make it productive...
No comments to tell why is not true for xyz reasons engines etc except in Australia... You know.
What if we accidentally switch gear to N when driving, is there any impact on the ecvt transmission?
Are different differential ratios available? I have a 2003 focus I'd like to achieve a taller gear ratio
There are three final drive ratios available; 3.42, 3.82 and the rare 4.06. In an 03 Focus you likely have the 3.42 gear set.
These are great videos. Thank you!
Nice illustration.
Complex electrical electromechanical system i hope this will last long
Toyota engineers deserve the Nobel Prize for that. The ultimate achievement in ICE-powered cars. And ICE will remain with us for quite a long time - everybody knows that long distance cruising in BEV is practically not viable, especially during the winter.
I always thought the eCVT was just toyotas name for yet another unreliable CVT.... But this is a work of genius and no wonder there are barely any reported failures...
@@sacleocheaterz Yikes, it took you that long, I mean Toyota has only been making the most reliable hybrids on earth for like 20+ years.
Yet somehow not a problem in Norway, about 30% EV's there. And really cold.
@@razvanlex Govt subsidies over there are very generous. They tax the crap out of their citizens and then hand some back in the form of EV subsidies.
@@Stoneforth But my answer was regarding the COLDER conditions. It's cold in Norway but EV's work fine over there...
what is the socket called you used
This unit has a 1 way sprag that's what connects the engine to transmission and lets the engine drive or recharge the generator
The sprag is only used on Toyota Primes. The non primes do not have a sprag. The sprag is probably the weak link in the Primes.
I believe that Fendt Tractors made in Germany acheive a contiuously variable drive by using a hydraulic motor to manipulate the sun or planetary portion of the planetary gearset to transmit massive torque in a speed controlled manner. Brilliant stuff. I own a 2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid, and love the incredible research and developement that has gone into their products. My real world fuel ecconomy over 120,000 trouble free kilometers is 5.2 liters/100 kms. Unbelievable for a mid size car. And no traditional CVT belt. :)
Appreciate you doing these disassembly and reassembly videos on this gearbox alot mate. Need to reseal the shifter assembly as it is leaking really badly on my father's car, was a bit worried about taking the shifter out as Ford wouldn't supply a repair manual even to a mechanic (myself) and I wasn't sure if any other work was involved, I'm not to familiar with fords.
Thank you David. Really needed this.
Wonderful Toyota ! ❤ Thanks for this video ! I will try to create an 3D printed RC car using a stirling engine and a 3D printed eCVT 😁
I knew the ecvt was different, but every video prior it was just black magic in a box. While I still don't fully comprehend it, at least I can see it
amzing video thanks
Mine makes a chatter noise after it worms up an some times it’s hard to get into 1st gear not sure if that’s a transmission fault or if it’s the hurst short throw shifter I put on it my transmission is still leaking out of the imputshaft seal I just replace it tho
Best explanation I've seen. Bravo!
In my opinion this is the best simplest video in youtube to explain the marvel of the eCVT transmission. Thank you.
helpful video. this is one of my test outs i will have to do on my final next thursday!
Lemme see if i have this right This is not like conventional transmissions where gear ratios are directly changed by gears. This is better described as a direct drive system that uses an open differential and electric motor to allow a ICE to rotate at speeds regardless of vehicle speed
Agree, while the speed ratio can be changed, the torque ratio is fixed. This makes the"ratios" involved different to those in other transmissions. Certainly a very cool system though - permanently meshed gears, no clutches, no synchros, to torque converters 👍
