Philodendron Bipennifolium Propagation - My Secret Method
You have such a nice variety of plants. Are there Platycerium varieties that stay small? I only ever see the larger ones locally. Drama queens: - definitely Alocasia, I am with you on that… The only place where they do consistently well for me is in a growtent. They keep on increasing on pot size and leaf size there, but my tent is small and they take up too much space. In the cabinet it fluctuates, sometimes they thrive and then suddenly the roots rot (I think they like it warmer than I am willing to provide) - Colourful Aglaonema… they usually rot again a few months after I finally rehabbed them (doesn’t matter where I put them, tent, cabinet, room or what season it is) though I have had one in pon for over a year now (as an experiment) and it hasn’t rotted yet Basically its just those 2 genusses.. I grow a whole lot of plants (including notoriously finicky ones) and everything else does well So I may just end up rehabbing the Alocasias and Aglaonemas one last time and giving them away, maybe they will do better in someone elses care
Hi 👋 this is my first viewing. Liked and subscribed. 🙂 I can relate to the appearance of different colored plant pots. I try to use only white or sometimes black.
Always enjoy watching you video's. It's amazing to see all the progress 😊
🌿 Do you think your plants have their own personalities? I’d love to hear your stories and plant dramas 😁🌱🌱
Calatheas are the death of me 😂. I got an alocasia frydek. Which died the first week of being in my home. I saved the corms and managed to restart the main stem😅😊. Which grow lights do you use? Also, where do you buy your tissue cultures as a fellow South African some planty things are hard to come by. Any tips or links you have (budget friendly) I would really appreciate it 😊
So enjoyed that 👍🏻👏
All of them have gotten so big and lavish. The orchids are cuties😍
I would advise not watching too many plant tubers as some of their advice has been eye opening to veteran plant people like me...
I so disagree with picking up random pots, I don't want any boring white pots, it is maximalism all the way.
Totally get where you’re coming from. Maximalism can bring so much personality and creativity to a space. For me, I’ve found that having a more cohesive look with similar pots really helped me feel a bit more grounded in my collection, but I think there’s beauty in both approaches.🙌 🌱🌿
I can relate to the side eye from a plant. This was a great video! 😊
Glad I'm not alone 😂🌿 Thank you!
Thankyou , all so true
Something you forgot is that you got to the level of rare plants thru common plants. If you would start over, take that you also dont have the knowledge so yeah, you technically bought a rare expensive plant and will kill it an a month or less. Its okay to fantasy about what would you do but then dont present it as advice for beginners
You are so spot on! However… many of these things we only find out in time. First comes collecting/enthusiasm… (getting everything interesting) Then overwhelm Some stay there… or quit the plant hobby And some start curating (sometimes with relapses into enthusiasm 😂) I think the real appreciation/enjoyment starts after the curating.. the collecting part can be stressful and overwhelming. Less is can most definitely be more… but when it comes to houseplants we usually get told/indoctrinated “the more the better” “got to collect them all”. If I look back I would advise myself something similar to your video… curate from the start…. But would I have listened to it in my episode of enthusiasm? Probably not 😅 Advice I would have taken from myself: start with good quality and comfortable-to-look-at-light-colour grow lights straight away, use beneficial bugs from the start and buy almost all pots in the same colour. Pots in the same colour look very calm indeed! I think it looks nicest if a few have different patterns/textures… or maybe one or 2 in the same contrasting colour. The title also reminds me of a question that helps me declutter sometimes “if I didn’t have this (plant) now, would I get it?”. Because sometimes it is easy to keep things just because we already have them.
Lol, the intro! All great advice. 💚 Only thing I would add, If I could start my plant collection over again, I wouldn't be so hard on myself. Instagram plants are not real plants, and our homes are not greenhouses, to offer them ideal growing conditions.
Very good advice. I do only buy white pots because of the cohesive look.
Weed out the space-grabbers that you don't enjoy that much anyways, is that the other conclusion? I was just about to toss some basil or whatever. My shelves aren't that spacious and I have to bring all my favorites in from the balcony over winter.
Here, see, I totally agree! I’ve just come out of winter, so I really understand what you mean-prioritize your favorites, and the rest must find somewhere else to go lol! 😅
Agreed, QUALITY over quantity
Need a video like this, as a beginner 🎉
This is good advice. Rather have a few unique plants than 100 common plants
Cuz whats wrong with common plants? Why is a common plant worse than a unique one. The point is do you like it or not. It is not a good advice to go for plant shopping amd have a mindset like ,,oh i like this plant, but its just a common plant so i dont buy it,,
I’d rather have 100 common plants as long as they’re easy going.
If you could start your plant collection over again, what would you do differently? Would you focus on fewer, bigger statement plants, or maybe choose varieties that need less maintenance? I’d love to hear your thoughts 🪴🌱
Nothing, I love the process of how my collection developed! 😅 If for whatever reason all of the plants got destroyed beyond saving... I have no idea. Try getting cuttings from people that have received my propagates in the past? I need my plants to have memories attached to them, buying new ones to replace the ones lost wouldn't feel the same.
I never thought of this and this is actually a good thought provoking question for me. I will have to hash this out with myself and do a video 💚🪴
just found you with this video and i love this different take on houseplant content. it's a really great way of appreiciating even the less "in" plants for the beauties they are. i'm gonna go binge your channel now 😄
Thank you so much! 😊 I’m thrilled you enjoyed this. I am planning many more videos like this in the future🌱 Any favorite plants you want me to cover?
@poeticplants maybe one of the velvet philodendrons. Or the euphorbia platyclada. I love it and i don't think people realize it's beauty 😊 But honestly I'm just excited to see more of them through your eyes 😁
But you have time to water them when you come back
😂I know, I know, I just can't help myself
I got sick of caring for them, especially climbing philodendrons and their moss poles. I eventually focused only on orchids which I can purchase intentionally to keep the hybrids/species with similar needs so I can actually go on a schedule.
Moss poles are a pain sometimes 😅 no ways, I have also started collecting some orchids (mini - smaller ones) but for some reason they are not that popular 😞
100 plants = no problem. 2 dogs + 2 cats = no problem. 100 plants + 2 dogs + 2 cats = no room to walk around and always cleaning up knocked over plants and chewed on plants, and having to water plants and fill up pets' water bowls. That's my life. Lol.
😂😂 Oh my
ok, i subscribed
Love love love it! I'm going to use hypertufa for the base.
Yesss, hypertufa is such a fun choice! 🎉Hope it turns out great!
My new favorite channel
You just made my day-thank you! 😊 Welcome to the plant family! 🌿
Lovely. Where have you been all this time?
Thanks a lot! But what if I don't want to remove the pup? Do I need to change the base, or will It grow successfully in the same one?
@@StefaniBoyd you can leave them, but they will keep growing, and eventually you will need a bigger base. Alot of people successfully grow big bushy staghorns with many on a base.
Great video...got 3 giant staghorns for free...lots of pups & spores.
Propagating is my enemy 😂 Especially with plants that are harder to come by. I usually keep a spare/reserve/second plant of those 😅…. And it feels wrong to throw things that need to be chopped off or that break off by accident in the bin (someone may want it 🤣) Im lucky though, theres a kind woman in my area that loves distributing plants for free to people in the area who are starting up with plants. So when it gets overwhelming for me, she gets a box of plants. In my country there are also a lot of “plant libraries” where people can go and trade plants or take one for almost nothing. In late spring/summer we sometimes bring propagations to some of those. Do I have to pay for all the soil, nursery pots etc? Yes. But I do get to do what I enjoy and I wont have to chuck things in the bin. I found that theres a certain amount with plants (the number is different for everyone)… Once that amount is exceeded everything becomes a chore and enjoyment is difficult. But once the number of plants a person can keep is found…. It can stay enjoyable 😊 As for watering schedules…. I like to amend my soil mix/potsize so that most of the plants in an area of my house need water at about the same time. Plants that drink less get a smaller pot or chunkier mix, plants that drink a lot get more coir/cocopeat in their mix. 😊 I do check throughout the week… and sometimes there are a few that need an extra sip anyway (but not too many)
Oh, I love everything about this! 🙌 Keeping a “backup” plant is cool idea! And that plant-sharing setup in your area sounds so fun, I need to see if my area has something like that still Thanks for sharing, you've got such a great system going! 🌱
@ In some places its facebook groups that help in plant sharing (maybe here as well, not sure) I like these more anonymous cabinets outside peoples houses though, less hassle 😊 I wouldn’t know what to do without them (probably learn how to chuck cuttings in the bin haha) The only problem with backup plants is that they can get big as well! (And then theres 2 plants to chop and even more propagations 😅). A solution with that is to make a new backup plant every now and then and keep that one small… every time the backup plant gets larger I root a new cutting and when its rooted I rehome the backupplant (but that means periods with 3 of the same plant)
Yes this soooo true!!! You just can't stop at 1 lol...they need friends😊
Haha 😂 and then the friends need friends!
It started innocent with me too xD
I feel your pain. I had downsized my plants from 150 to 50. My orchid collection of 18 years were all given away except for 20. I had to retain back my own time as my weekends were all taken away by plant chores. And as Marie Kondo said, when it doesn’t spark joy anymore, I had to pare down my jungle. I still have plants but they do not take over my schedule anymore. ❤❤ Good luck!🍀
Oh wow, that’s such a big shift-I understand you on the need to reclaim your time! 🌿 Downsizing like that must’ve been hard, but keeping just the ones that still bring you joy is refreshing and good to hear 💚🌿🌿
Very beautiful plant!
Thank you! It got a new leaf today, and it's so big too 🌿🌿
Everything you said is so true. I just did inventory and turned out that I only have 149 plants so I have room in my head for more. My family and friends agreed, so they are looking for plants I don't have for me. The apartment is saying otherwise. Table plants definitely have to scooch.
So many cool plants !
I can relate. I’m sure I have over 100 house plants. When I started propagating , my thoughts were how happy it’d be to give away the new plants to friends/family. Unfortunately, none of my friends/family appreciate nor care for house plants. So, I’m torn with giving away a well loved and nurtured houseplant to certain death, or keeping it in my already crowded space. 😊
Definitely keep um 😂
I feel your pain 😂😢 It's so tough when you're excited to share your plants but no one else gets it. You're not alone in this! 🌿🌿
Hi, Nick! Thanks for sharing your plant parent struggles! I myself have recently paired my collection from 60 houseplants down to 25. You're totally right, plants CAN become a burden, so I decided to only keep the plants that I absolutely love and to learn more about them, in order to better appreciate what I already have. Incidentally, your plant architecture videos have helped in that regard! 💕 I would love to see at some point one on the Platycerium or on the Dracena reflexa, if you feel like it. Good luck with your channel and with your plant collection! ☺
Thank you, so much for sharing your experience! I completely related - sometimes less really is more when it comes to plants. I am thrilled to hear that my videos have helped you appreciate your collection! I am definitely loving my Platyceriums right now, and a video on them is coming soon! Your support means a lot and is super motivating. Thanks again! ♥️
Why was this so calming to watch 🙈😂
The plants are taking over!!👽🌱🪴
I saved 2000l of rain water this winter......it might not be enough for spring and summer 😂😂
Like any addiction, it needs to be controlled, then eliminated. Or it takes over your life and eventually it will make you miserable. When I realized I had 50 plants of various sizes I needed to stop what I was doing. I was inviting almost any sick plant at the big box stores into my ICU. I was going to save it. Poor thing. Sometimes it worked. Sometimes not. I had all these little pots sitting on little plates with little buds, leaves, trying to breath. I put them in clean airy soil, I watered them gently, I picked off the dead leaves. They were taking over my life. I was NOT interested in propagation. Why make more plants when there was no room. I have them hanging from the ceiling of pulleys. I can't put them in big Chinese jars since my girl kitty thinks that's her salad. So eventually I told myself when a plant just won't grow, refuses to LIVE...let it die. So now I have 28 healthy growing plants. No more little babies trying to gasp. I have two Dubias that are not doing well. I've played with these two for over a year. I'm done. When they really die, they are going into the big black trash can behind the house. Watering takes a lot of time I don't have. I have a music career playing in two orchestras. I love to paint downstairs in my paint studio. I can't stop doing my hobbies for the sake of plants. The addiction is over. I am in control now. I have my hobbies OTHER THAN plants. Enough. oh wait....the COST of all that potting soil, orchard bark, worm castings, coco coa, vermiculite, and pots pots pots......enough. Good luck to you!
Even with all the chaos-fighting for space, constant watering, and the endless propagation stations-I honestly love each and every one of my plants (well, most of them, lol). 🌿💕 It’s not always easy, but the joy they bring makes it all worth it. I hope you can relate to this plant parent struggle! Let me know if your leafy babies ever take over your life too! 😄🌱
Love this!!
What are those ‘balls with leaves on a string’ in front of your window?
@@Mark-vf8op those are kokedama's they are plants grown in a ball of soil that is wrapped up. It's kinda cool, but eventually the plant out grows them. 🌿🌿
Loved making this! Cannot wait to show you all the update 🌿🌿
I really loved getting to see some of them bloom ❤
Pretty flowers😍😍
I subscribed to your channel because i enjoy plants, accents, and cuties. 😘
Great video Nick! You are so talented at keeping the plants alive. Those green thumbs of yours never cease to amaze me. Keep them coming.☺
