New Melleray is a Cistercian monastery located in the rolling farmland south of Dubuque, Iowa. Founded in 1849 by Trappist monks from Mount Melleray Abbey in Ireland, New Melleray belongs to a monastic tradition that reaches back to the monks of the desert, who in the early Christian centuries left everything to follow Christ. We support ourselves by farming and making wooden caskets (visit us at Trappist Caskets). Currently, about 30 monks live, work and pray at the Abbey.
