Medusa's Revenge Part 3 - Taking Shape
In Part 3 we build out our CuMai billet and then start shaping it. It ended up being a 21" blade instead of 18 after worrying that I might not have enough steel for 18".

Day 2 of Medusa's Revenge. A CuMai Kopis. Today we layer up the 2 billets that will be the outside layers of the steel. The target is to get each side up to 180 (really 196 layers) for a total exceeding 370 layers. Scout carry sounds like a cool idea. It is easy to draw, but difficult to put back. This is the scout draw of a 10" Bowie made as a set of a knife and tomahawk. To see more pictures, goto www.solarstorm.ca

Looking good so far! Good luck.
Thanks, a bit terrified of quenching, but I always am...
This is going to be awesome! Glad I found your channel. Also glad to see I'm not the only one with the broken firebricks on top of my forge. Never fails the ones I use as doors fall out as I'm pulling something out
lol Yup, figure it helps act as a heat sink…. No science behind that, but also hard to toss away. I have used them as rests or other things too. One of my most ambitious builds so far.
Nice progress! Very ambitious build, especially since your forge (like most of us!) isn't equipped with a thermocouple temp controller.
Thanks, what doesnt show in the video is how much I spend watching the temp with my infrared temperature gun. I do have a kiln for heat treat (if it fits since I made it a bit longer than planned)
Bob, I am so pumped! You are just killing it man!
Thanks, this was an insane amount of time at the grinder. The stock removal part of CuMai is the part I wish I could find another way to do.
@@solarstorm50 lol there is one, buy a 1/4 million dollar cnc machine and your all set. Don’t tell your wife I said that
lol, Maybe when I sell 2 more blades...
The slag on my hand goes ouch ouch ouch, but make sure you add some pictures
Smart to test fit it first. not sure I would have thought of that.
you only have to not do the test fit once…
so does the borax really work just as well as the specialized fluxes you can buy for forging?
not sure if I have any method of comparing other than the borax is a lot cheaper, and its not usually the flux that will cause me a failure. its usually me rushing the initial heat.
How are you going to get 240 layers when you start with 16? The math is hurting my head
You are correct, there is always a difference between what I put to paper and the steel I have. I did end up restacking this one out to 192 layers for each side giving me a total of 384 for the blade plus the 2 copper and 1 center of 1084. if you are interested in the amount of steel lost when creating Damascus watch this short, I kept track all the way through the process ua-cam.com/users/shortsbtZgFZgtXmU?si=RgbNQAmpEKLDcrGC
Great work, and may I say you must have VERY tolerant neighbors!
Thanks, it helps if you fix things for them. It would seem that I am the only person that can weld things in the neighborhood (although I am always ashamed of my welding). I actually get more people wanting to come watch.
@@solarstorm50 Happily for me, I have my forge set up on my 9 acre family farm, so nobody complains. Even out here, like you, since I can weld (after a fashion!) I get lots of neighbors wanting quick jobs. Oh, and antique tractor owners who need me to forge parts for their beasts they can't get anywhere else.
@brysonalden5414 Nice! I am building a shop on our lake lot (3.68 acres). love the parts business. Always great to have those skills. Maybe someday, I just bought a lathe and mill.
Yeah, I've got a couple of those "kits" in my shop, too! Some assembly required. Looking forward to more!
They look so easy! “We do this not because it is easy, but because we thought it would be easy!”
Boom!!!
Nice set up! I like that your precise with calculations! Good for learning and repeating successful steps within the build! Great video brother!
Thanks just started Pt 2 where I build out the layer count I am now down to 4lbs and change just doing the first re-stack. I am always amazed at how much I loose. I did a blog post on how much I lost making a Damascus axe in my blog on my website solarstorm.ca/blog/f/damascus-losses
@@solarstorm50 sweet awesome info thanks for the link!!!!
Just put this together ua-cam.com/users/shortsbtZgFZgtXmU?feature=share. 40% loss in creating the billets.
Bob, I have seen the Royer folks have a hollow tube so that they can get more air flow. I wonder if there is something a guy could do to get like a slow dripping handle with hollow tube and fill it with water. What do you think?
Maybe, but this is too easy for me to think about much. I see a lot of guys use a nub and tongs. then dont worry about this. But honestly the water works well, is simple and easy. I really wish I had figured this out earlier.
What handle?😊
That rebar welded to the billet gets hot from the dragons breath! ;)
Dude. Epic!
Thank you!
I can even wait till end of video to comment. I am so excited!!! Where did you get Medusa pins?
I use this guy on FB. I create the design and he makes em for me facebook.com/fabulousknives
Dude…. Your Master level at this too? Da heck Bob! How can I keep up witchu??!! Ha, nice work. That piece is going to be amazing. How long do you figure you will be a hermit stuck in the shop for?
I told the customer 3 months for the blade and scabbard. Mid Sept delivery. I plan on videoing as much as possible.
@@solarstorm50 well I am pumped. You’re a great teacher man, I am learning a lot from your little tips. Keep it up!
Thank you!
How did you do the finger ring?
It actually took 3 tries. I have two failed attempts in the scrap bin. Started with 1” square stock. Then Split the ring side first. About 80%/20% with the 80% for the ring. Then drew out the ring with the hammer and then curled it round the horn and a small hardy mandrel I made. Files to round it off. Once I was happy with the ring I then formed the top of the guard and cut off the excess (had lots of excess, but better to have too much). Had to heat and tweak it a couple of times as I added the spacers and antler so that they met up perfectly. Was a bear to sand smooth for the bluing because I really couldn’t get any automated way to work, so I used the Mk 1 fingers, some music, and an occasional touch of scotch.
@@solarstorm50 I hear ya, I have a growing scrap pile. I wondered if it was worth selling “scrap knives” as memoirs to people. Like throwing a cheap handle on it and selling it as a “invest in the artist” momento
Bob, First of all I love the tracing the historic pieces concept. From what I have heard is some of these ancient blades were based of a the curves of animals that they had scene. I was thinking to myself, how cool would it be to come up with a shape design for knife based off a native North American Animal? If we could find a pose of an animal and build a functional useful knife overlaid the same way you did here, but over an animal and show the transition of photos to completion, bet it would turn out to be a great video!!
The best shapes are always found in nature! I find most of the blades refined their shape from some useful purpose. Be it short for close quarters, long curved Calvary blades, bludgeoning blades, piercing, etc. I know when I build a blade, I typically name them. That name quite often comes from an animal. Venom for the heartbeat spike in the Damascus, Cobra from fangs on the guard, a dragons claw. So I think you absolutely right. Might have to look around.
This is by far the most comfortable long term carry for a bigger knife, but you are right, how do you make that sheathing process easier?
I guess if you victorious fighting off the bear, you have time to sheath it. If you weren’t, it really doesnt matter…
Bob, you are just killing it on pushing out new content. Do you have the paid version of knife print? I know you have told me before I just can’t remember.
Yes, i do try and support the guys in the industry. I cant remember, but it really wasnt that much.
Honest question, how much cleanup is there with the air gun?
honestly its quick, I dont clean between the colors, just start with the lightest then spray until I see the new color. then at the end spray varsol through it and then take the tip off and let it sit in the varsol for 20 min. take it out and dry it
I just have to say man, the idea of including firesteel and stones is brilliant.
Cant say that is my idea. I saw it on a survival knife and thought that makes way too much sense
Great choice on background music! Bob, one thing I found works awesome for cutting the heavy leather is Sheetmetal sheers and it cuts like butter. No more multiple cuts with box cutter
I will give that a go! thanks
Just my opinion of course, I watched your first two videos that I thoroughly enjoyed. However, this third video there was background music that added nothing to the video and made listening to it very distracting to me. Unfortunately, I couldn't continue to watch it. Looks like some excellent leather work though
Noted! just started doing this at the request of a couple of people. Still getting the hang of it, toned down for the 4 and 5 parts
Dang man, another big knife? awesome!
my favorite non damascus knife. Thanks!
@@solarstorm50 you like this guy me over the cobra? Man you just keep going on the cutting edge turnout man!
Non Damascus. Cobra for Damascus
I have really been wanting to make one of these holsters for my Bowie, do you think I should put it at like a 15% angle upward?
I think parallel, but if it is a smaller bowie 5-6" I would look at a cross draw. This looks good, but with a big bowie, I found it stuck out too far. The idea behind the scout draw is that it is out of the way. With a big knife, it knocks around quite a bit.
Great Video! Stoked you did some video on leather, your work is amazing.
Thank you very much!
Just so amazing
Thank you
Beautiful
Thanks, I really like this build
you made it look so easy 😆
The assembly is easy. my fingers were numb from using the jeweler's files. Thank you
Bob, awesome man! This knife is so amazingly beautiful. Just listening to those pieces come together is unreal
Thanks Michael. I cant really find a reason for a take down other than its cool get that perfect fit.
Boom, The full Build!!! So awesome Bob, What did you make the pommel out of?
The handle is Epe Wood, some call it Iron wood. It actually sinks in water it is so dense.
Boom! There’s that video! So awesome? How is the new press?
Had to finish this first, but I like it. Didnt think there would be a big difference betwee 16T and 12T but I was wrong...
Boom baby! Get er done! That’s awesome Bob!
Bob, Man that looks amazing. Great work as always
Thanks! I always like etching. You can see I was chasing a bit of decarbe that I had to polish off with the 1500 grit sandpaper.
