Should You Make a Webtoon? Things to Consider Before Starting
So you want to make a webtoon? Here are some things you should consider before taking the plunge... And avoid the same pitfalls I fell into.
It's important to ask yourself the hard questions before you are several years into an unplanned unorganized mess you have to continue. This way you wont feel the need to abandon your projects when things dont work out!

Animating in OpenToonz is a struggle (but worth it)

OpenToonz is a free open source animation software that has a lot to offer for the broke starving animator, although using it itself is a struggle. Two years ago I graduated from my animation course and couldn't afford the programs the school provided, so to keep animating after school I found OpenToonz. Not Sponsored. In this video I am animating a simple head-turn in OpenToonz, this isn't a t...

I’d love it if I could make a webtoon/comic eventually, but knowing me, my best bet would be to first write out and publish the story as a webnovel first to see if it gets any traction before I can even start thinking about making one.
Ok, not gonna lie.. You kinda look like Link from The legend of zelda: Breath of the wild.. 💖💖
ahhh i needed this
Thanks, specially the promot thing
i would love to make a comic with my own characters but long term projects are really hard for me and comics themselves are difficult to do. Thank you for the video, it was nice to listen to while drawing!!
Yipee
Thanks, Jesus-Christ loves you.
I´m writing a comic, kinda simple not aiming to high (It´s the first one that I made) and I find always, things like (Wait this scene is hard to understand what´s happening) or I need a new character to make history progress, wait I write the history but forget to design the character xD, haha, thanks this video was super usefull
Yeah it is a lot to keep track of, maybe a checklist could help in that regard. I'm glad you found the video useful and I hope your comic making journey is a smooth one!
@@Puddles856 Thanks, now I have a "book" more of less, were I write everything of my history :D
Yippee new Puddles video !! Funny enough my book was gonna be a webtoon/webcomic before I figured out how much effort it was and switched to literature lmao
everything is hard when it comes to creative projects, good thing you found something that works for you! lol
👏🏼🙌🏼🎉
sorry i dont read hieroglyphs
@Puddles856 you make exceptions for your best fren 😌
idk man i still cant read
@Puddles856 that's hmm, unfortunate for a comic maker * I said with joys *
oh it is useless to yell
Thanks for watching, hope it helps !!!
That's also one thing I don't really understand with some commissioners. It's like if you have specific kinks you want drawn, why not... look up artists who specialized in those kinks? Or at least ones that are ok with drawing them lol.
You should check out Tahoma2D - it's basically OT, but with less bugs, better support, and has several extra features that aren't in OT.
Not really struggle for me, more of a time-consuming annoyance. But I use Tahoma2D which is basically "OpenToonz with Blackjack and..." to paraphrase Bender. (I'm in a manual clean up process right now and I can't use T2D's cleanup tools due to how it's drawn and I never did any cleanup work to begin with meaning I don't have experience with doing it efficiently so that might color my judgement).
@@UltimatePerfection im getting a lot of Tahoma2D recommendations lol: hope the clean up goes well!
Have you tried Tahoma2D? It's a free open source program built off Opentoonz but it has more features. is more beginner friendly and is updated more frequently.
Opentoonz is great, I love it and been using it for a while. But consider Tahoma2d, it's like Opentoonz, made on top of it actually. But it gets more consistent updates and features so it should respond better. And it's more regularly supported. It's easy moving to T2d from OT because they are almost exactly the same. Give it a try, if nothing else. And yes, it's also free and open source. Great Video btw
There's also tahoma2d, which is based on OpenToonz, but it just has a little more functionality to make animation easier.
I went from 1.6.1 to 1.7.1 and it's weird. I switched a while ago, and I'm used to it now. When i first got 1.7 i didn't know how to create scenes 💀 I'm dumb ngl
Tony Gaddis on youtube has great videos on Opentoons.
Demure Innkeeper + Feral Swordswoman bound by debt is such a VIBE
@@LadySweetMc HEHEHEH u get it lol
Nothing is set in stone, everything is subject to change, even the name lol. THANKS FOR WATCHING
New comic !!! Good luck !!!
thanks lol
Loved your style of commentary😊 So organic and relatable 😅
@@Musashi-if3tl lol, thanks : )
@@Puddles856 You have good charm😊 should make more content.
i agree, new vid out soon lol
I would recommend tahoma2d it has ffmpeg installed and a easier interface but its like opentoonz with the interface and settings stuff like that
a tip for files like this; you should have sent it to a google drive for them to download. and please please even when you're underselling yourslf (you shouldn't your art is great ) get at least half payment upfront
All around solid advice, hope things get better with your commissions !
@Puddles856 haha thanks. I'm working on another commission with a lovely client for a pallete cleanse.
you should write a TOS; do you want my TOS?
I'm dealing with a similar client right now; the person that's paying me is my bestie who wanted to help me with my new laptop but I didn't wanna just accept his money. I'm drawing commissions for his city of mist party members and one of them seems to not understand that every major decisions they make to change something they said they already liked and dragged me until semi clean sketch for means I have to do it again, from scratch. it's not a 3D model you dingus. anyway, been a pain, gave them an ultimatum, I'm not doing any more modifications for this client. nightmare client istg. it's worse when they don't break tos but get on your nerves. at least you can just cancel it with a decent reason and a fee if they break tos.
opentoonz has autosave; when you make the file there's a button on the buttom that says save every X minutes, the default is 15
true, I think i have it set differently but despite its autosave features, it always manages to crash before autosave or manual save (for me anyways) Thanks for commenting : )
@@Puddles856 you can send it to autosave like every 5 minutes or even one minute if it hates your pc
@@Puddles856 it tends to crash even with auto saving I would recommend you go to file and save the project a lot just in case
i use opentoonz a bunch, and ive gotten so used to it i cant even use adobe animate without feeling wierd
Enjoyed the video. In case you don't know, Tahoma2d is based on OpenToonz but it changes some things and adds some things. Some folks prefer it to OpenToonz. Another option I'm playing with (as I try to decide what my go to animation software is going to be) is Rough Animator. It's not free but it is really cheap (depending on your circumstances of course) and it works across tablets AND laptops, which is nice for folks that have both. Rough Animator may not have all the bells and whistles (as the name implies) but you can actually do a lot with it, especially if you're primarily a frame by frame animator. If nothing else, you can reliably do your roughs there (duh!) and then bring those into another program for finishing. I'm also trying Blender Grease Pencil, which comes with the complexities of Blender so it's a bit harder to learn but also really powerful once you do. And there's Moho, which is a one time payment software that's probably the closest thing to Harmony. It's really good but not cheap - though it is cheaper than Harmony. I'm also trying Clip Studio Paint for animation but so far I find its approach a bit unintuitive. Apologies for the blog post and keep up the good work!
