How I make a Simple Set of Sharpening Tools – Narrated Version
In this video, I'll explain my process for making a simple set of tools for sharpening straight knives and hook knives. The materials for this set are quite easy to find at any local hardware store. The next video will show how I use these tools to sharpen my knives, so stay tuned! If you enjoy these types of narrated videos, please let me know in the comments. Don't forget to like and subscribe! :)
List of materials I used: 3 pieces of flat wood (25 cm x 3 cm x 0.5 cm), 3 wooden dowels (25 cm x 1.1 cm diameter), all-purpose glue, 6 different sheets of sandpaper for metal - wet or dry (180, 320, 800, 1200, 2000, and 3000 grit).

    I do much of my sharping using the same methods. After some experimentation I have found the use of wax as the bonding source works pretty well. Easy to apply and easy to change paper. Just warm it when you are reattaching new paper to make it stick better.

    On a previous occasion, I removed a log from a state park and was issued a citation, the exact sum of which I recall to be either 170 or 140.

    hey, in your vids it looks like the wood you carve is quite dry. do you find that that helps you carve overal or do you do the bulk cuts when wet and finer detail once a bit dryer?

    • @nadavartandwood
      @nadavartandwood 4 дні тому

      yes I try to do the big cuts and the general shape when wet, then the final touches when dry. usually it gives me more control and accurate cuts (:

    The beauty of your simple system is that it can be tailored to the carvers specific tools rather than a one-size-fits-all approach of the commercially available systems. Thank you for answering a question many new wood carvers seldom ask. Re the glue issue, I've seen hot-melt glue used for similar purposes. To remove the sand paper you just heat it with a heat gun and peal the paper off. Denatured alcohol will remove any hot-melt glue residue before the next application.

    I've seen a few ways of carving on UA-cam, I like this way. This is pretty much exactly how I carve spoons. Although I leave some extra wood on the top to make a 2 pronged spork.

    Thank you for sharing this journey, I found the tutorial very informative. Can you suggest tips for finding the right raw material that can be processed without a saw or an axe? I am just getting started, and would prefer to not acquire tools if I can get by without them.

    Like this format very much. Relaxing and useful. One question, have you dried the wood before carving? I saw a video where man waited a month for the wood to dry, or it's working only for winter and wet wood? Thanks

    Another option is to make your flat slats out or medium thickness of Acrylic with the rubber cement , and PVC pipe as your round dowel

    I dont know about new glues but i think a mixture of pine resin and charcoal will do the job, you heat the mixture and glue the sandpaper, when you need to unglue it you can just heat over a fire or with an heatgun the object and you will have a liquid glue again

    Thin razor blades or utility knives are good, cheap alternatives to old victronox knives. You can buy them in packs of 100 for under $10-20 USD pretty much any hardware store or online
