EDHREC recommending garbage is so true Like, if you wanna play aristocrats, first off, pretty much every aristocrat deck is 90% the exact same cards, whatever is different depends on your commander and it's most likely just gonna be like 10 cards, but that's a whole other thing, the actual problem is that: EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. Recommends Pawn of Ulamog Pawn of Ulamog is a TERRIBLE fucking card and yet it's in every fucking deck It creates tokens when a *non token* creature *you control* dies Not when *A* creature dies, no no, YOUR creatures You are playing aristocrats, you literally DON'T want your creatures to die, they are the ones making people lose life by just existing and having YOUR GARBAGE 1/1 TOKENS die, that's what you wanna kill, the 1/1 human that your Pitiless Plunderer is gonna transform into a treasure token, NOT THE FUCKING BLOOD ARTIST

Honestly, I still occasionally look at templates to help me out, but i differ dramatically from them. My ramp and draw are way higher than any template. I'd rather run into too much draw than not enough, and commander is supposed to be about those big, dumb spells. I want them, and the only way to get there consistently is to have more of the "veggies." Since adopting this mindset when building, I'm regularly the threat at the table.

I've taken Sol Ring out of most of my decks because they either couldn't handle the heat drawn from accelerating early (and trying to fix the other side of this issue was just turning them into the average "template" with staple interactions) or it was not worth it in any turn after 3-- color intensive decks that struggled to benefit from the colorless ritual, decks that relied on mass nonland removal and/or decks reliant on mid/late top deck quality. The last one to ditch it was Teysa Karlov, and it was deliberately to slow it down: while it has the aristocratic/reanimator combo finishers you'd expect, it's just very resilient, between interaction and token generation, so it felt more fun to (put to test and) make use of that resilience.

My worst game was one that consisted me getting three v oned playing marwyn her commander tax got to 13, she never got passed 2 +1+1 counters spent most of the game with with only 1-2 mana dorks for defending myself at most everything got counter spelled or spot removed.

Recently made a brew on blanka/howling abomination. You basically have a fucking bomb in the command zone. I made an honestly very simple brew and people in my play group with decks I would consider far better struggle to beat it.

Wow, i kinda want to build this deck, its a lot more fun than the tipycal sythis enchantress deck (which i have) that's just card draw and soft locks...maybe I'm just a boring deckbuilder, but this list seems right up my alley, an underplayed commander with an off path strategy. Just chef's kiss

I have a large enough collection to build a cube, but I don't enjoy drafting. I just don't find it fun. The mini-game of hemming and hawwing over each pack while trying to remember what I'm leaving everyone else just makes me stressed. And not having access to certain cards because I wasn't lucky (which I'm frequently not) is just annoying and why I only buy singles and not packs anymore.

I love Pharika! I had my own version of the Pharika/Umori enchantress deck, but it got upgraded to Anikthea when Commander Masters dropped. I left her in the deck though, because I love the synergy she has with enchantress cards. My own “Pharika moment”, though, would have to be my Ghen, Arcanum Weaver deck. I built Ghen because I loved the interaction he had with sagas, where you can sacrifice a saga with its final chapter ability on the stack to get back another saga. My version plays like a control deck, leaning into the value loop that Ghen creates to repeatedly remove threats and keep myself drowning in card advantage. It’s a lot of fun!

She can also enable the mean feroucious fog. Not as good as tangle but allot cheaper.

Idea use a pinger equipment in combination with her death touch to turn her into repeatable removal and making her a bigger target or to ping herself.

I'm bad about disassembling precons that haven't been used in a while. I also took apart 2 of my own decks: Eriette of the Charmed Apple, a pillowfort auras deck, and my first attempt at Voltron with Wilson, Refined Grizzly using the Flaming Fist background. Both decks were slow and inconsistent.

I think people just love Izzet!

Exactly this. Teach how to build, not what to build. Ideally i’d like to see less generic cards both printed and played. I literally roll my eyes at Rhystic Study, Smothering Tithe and now the new Trouble in Pairs. I love seeing tiny synergy pieces create bigger and better board states than any of the aforementioned staples.

Nice! And good deck inspiration since my playgroup is reviving our budget EDH format this holiday. We based our format on the Swedish rallysport “Folkrace”. Everyone builds a budget deck (or not!?..) and gets to play it. After the match the winner may start bidding on any deck besides their own starting at 200sek (20ish euro/us-dollars). Then bidding goes around the table increasing with fixed bids of 20sek, you may not bid on your own deck. After that second place gets to bid if they want and so on. This makes it so that everyone actually keeps their decks budget. You are allowed to have a deck as pricy as you want but be prepared to sell it at a loss after the first match if that happens. Experience from last time we had the format active was that there was a bidding every 3 or 4 games. This year we also decided to secret Santa each other a 250sek deck to start it off with. 🎄🎅🏻

Maybe this is too specific, but if you're playing any Green X deck, play Wood Elves, Hunting Wilds, and Rangers Path in tandem with the Dominaria United duals and the Kaldheim snow duals. I built a full budget Ur Dragon deck with 5 colour mana base and my mana fixing was near perfect with these tools.

crowd source your info. every major deck building site has filters that you can use to draw inspiration without straight up cloning their build.

I will say my go to budget brew is brago king eternal (king of value) because it's forever supported by more enter the battlefield effects on non land permanents. Also i played a token version with a bunch of super cheap cards and it just did the brago thing really well

I really like the content of this video 😊, but would have one little ask: Could you please stay on your screenshots a little longer than you do (or alternatively summarize what cards do, verbally)? Especially if you want to talk about obscure cards (as you do here), you can't just mention the card name and assume that we know the card, but should give us enough time to read them. I don't remember a video for which I had to pause and skip back so many times, and it diminished the fun I had with a video whose concept I loved. I know it's nice to have a snappy video, but there are other ways of achieving that (e.g., rapid fire humor - e.g. that happens to tell us what a card conceptually does - rather than namedropping card names). Love your effort and looking forward to the next video! ❤ PS: If it's your intent for viewers to frequently pause the video (or skip back in time), in exchange for them having to do something annoying at least reward them with a visual gag in the paused image

In regards to cards that care about how many tapped creatures you have, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Harvest Season. Tap your humans for mana and then ramp by THAT many basics.

Yeah I oove budget building!! Playing other formags helps alot (I primarily play pauper so im a budget builder pro) one of my best examples of a budget deck I built with lessons from other formats is my simic elves deck. While its pretty generic its more geared to pauper elves. It ises tishana the tide bender as the commander which gives me the ability to draw for each creature I control. An absolute boom for elves in the cmz. The idea came from the fact pauper elves often uses distant melody to draw a bajillion cards oncs it runs out of gas.

I’ve been brewing a Kellan the Fae Blooded deck that’s basically just splinter twin combo in edh, largely inspired by a budget modern deck I built when I was like 15 that comboed Midnight Guard with Elemental Mastery. I took it to a local tournament and got my butt kicked by a billion different control decks but the basic combo is so elegant I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since

Bonus fun note about niche cards: a good chunk of people haven’t heard of them. One of my favourite commander moments is when one of the other players goes “whoa what is that thing”

If I’m being entirely honest, I think that ub is fantastic at a baseline, it invites newer players to try the game (happened with the fallout ub with one of my friends) it celebrates other fantasy and sci-fi series, and encourages die hard mtg fans to expand their horizons
