Awesome trip! Thanks for sharing your thru hike of the OHT!
Thanks for watching, Chad! I’ll be back out there at the end of the month to pick back up where I left off. Hiking Grinders to Dillards, & Spring Creek to Matney Knob. Hoping for some nice fall colors, & rain!
Thank you for documenting your experience! I plan on tackling this trail in March! PS: Thanks for the trail magic you left on the Highway 9 TH of the Ouachita Trail!! I enjoyed a powerade from your cooler completing the trail on Wednesday!
Thanks for sharing, Chad! It’s the least I can do for a trail that’s done a lot for me. Hopefully that was a nice lil surprise as your hike was coming to an end. Congrats on finishing the OT! The OHT in March is nothing short of magic. You’ll love it.
I’ll be out there next week to check on it, & gather any trash. Should I bring more water? There was a pretty good size pool in Hillary Hollow 2 weeks ago. But we haven’t had a drop of rain since….
@@DixonHikesThank you! It was an incredible experience and your trail magic just added to the adventure in a positive way! I would say bring more water if no rain in the next week. The seasonal water sources were dry besides the creek near the Lake Sylvia Junction until the Maumelle River.
That Hurricane Creek west crossing is absolutely no joke when the waters up! I was out there in March of 2023, and was in tears by the time we reached the other side. I am loving watching your journey! Thanks for the videos.
Thanks for watching, Lacey! My most terrifying experience ever in the backcountry, was trying to cross Hurricane creek. Sub-freezing, above waist high. I thought it was important to caution anyone watching this video to not underestimate this crossing!
Great video, planning on doing this same route for my birthday in the winter
Perfect time to be on the BRT. Have a great hike!
Just spent the whole afternoon watching your hike: loved it and thankyou. Hope to blaze some of this trail in the near future !
Thanks for sharing & watching, Frank! The OT is a great trail, you’ll enjoy it. I’m planning on doing it again in a few years!
Hey Chris, new subscriber here. For any of the trails in Arkansas, do you hang your food or take any preventative measures to reduce bear encounters?
Thanks for the sub@@happycampers6592 I hang my food more times than not, but bears aren’t really in my mind here in Arkansas. Over 1,000 miles hiked in the backcountry & I’ve still yet to see a bear. I hang it to keep the little critters away from me. Odor proof bags have proven to be effective as well.
🔥
As someone planning on thruhiking the OHT thank you for documenting your experience
Thanks for watching, James! Hope these are helpful as you plan your thru-hike of the OHT. If you have any ?’s or if I can help in anyway, reach out!
Great short lover! Glad you enjoyed your day off!
Somebody striping it 😳
I'll be heading back to ERL this fall with my brother. It will be his first ever backpacking trip. Can't wait.
Nice! 58 degree nights in August are rare around here, as you know - I had to take advantage with a quick overnighter. C’mon fall!
I’m assuming you film with your phone, what gimbal do you use? Always enjoy being on the trail with you!😊
Thanks for watching, Big T. Most of this video was shot on a GoPro hero 5 black with the karma grip gimbal. Stabilization has greatly improved on the phones, all my recent videos are shot on iPhone 14Pro.
@@DixonHikes I’m just getting back into the hiking/backpacking after a 25-30 year hiatus. I think I’m gonna try my hand at the videoing and editing. Keep doing what you’re doing, I really enjoy your content.
Man, that’s awesome! I didn’t start backpacking until my mid-30’s. It has become my passion, & an integral part of my life. As far as videos, go for it! Definitely a learning curve when it comes to editing. My only advice is to not chase the algorithm & make the kind of videos you want/like. I don’t watch gear videos, so I don’t make gear videos. I enjoy documenting most of my trips, showing off my home state, and sharing with my family/friends. I’ve even made a few friends on UA-cam in the process. That is the only purpose of my channel. Good luck - if I can help in anyway, please reach out.
Looks like a great trail
It is indeed, Mike. If you enjoyed the Ouachita Trail - you’d love the OHT!
Hey there! Thanks so much for this! I've been scouring UA-cam for months trying to find someone with some experience on this trail. I'm wanting to do a section hike like you did before attempting a through hike. Any chance I could pick your brain for setting up a section hike of the OHT?
Thanks for watching. Absolutely, shoot me an email with any questions you may have. sooiepig311@yahoo.com
Great video! What is the name of the ending song and artist?😊
Hey, thanks! I found that song on iTunes. Ozark Mountains by the BlackBerry Winter Band.
@@DixonHikes I thought that's who it was! They are a local band!!
Is it possible to access those shelters from the lake with a kayak? If the photo at 11:39 was just below the shelter by the lake, it looks pretty marshy. Would not be a great spot to land a boat. I swear, my list of places I want to explore seems to grow more than it shrinks. I need to get out more to check things off my list and spend less time looking into different places because I always end up finding somewhere new I want to go.
So many trails. So little time. Right there with ya, brother. This is a nice lil off the radar loop - the shelters are awesome. I don’t see why you couldn’t roll up to one in a kayak.
Great content. I live in Arkansas, and I will do this trail one day I hope.
Thanks! So many great trails in our home state. Few better than the OHT!
Hi Chris. Watched this again. Still impressed with the great work you did in filming this trail. What an incredible trail with so many waterfalls to see. Great job as always, thankful for your great work!
Thanks, Mr Ken! I’ll do the Foothills Trail again one of these years - want to see it in the spring with ALL those falls rolling!
Hi Chris. Reently heard about this trail, very much enjoyed your great video! Might give this a try. Question: Do you think it is possible to day hike the entire 12+ miles in 1 day? My oldest grandson (age 25) and I are thinking on giving this a try. Keep up the great work!
Hey, Ken! The Fiery Gizzard blew me away, honestly. Just an incredible hike! Yes, I think y’all could do it as a day hike. Start early though. That stretch down & through the Gorge is quite challenging, but spectacular. The “Dog Hole” trail stays up on the ridge & bypasses the Gorge, supposedly easier. But you’d be missing the best part of the trail. IMO.
@@DixonHikes Thank you Chris, appreciate your advice!
Hi Chris. Another great hiking video. I especially enjoyed seeing you walk along The Narrows. Also knowing Father's Day was a few days ago, hope it was a great day for you. I seem to recall you have several children, all teens. I'm thankful for them that their dad sets a good example by walking in the Lord's Creation. It's good for everyone. I have 3 sons, 3 daughters-in-law, 11 grandchildren, and 2 grandson in laws. I'm hoping to do some hiking with my oldest grandson (age 25) this summer/fall. He's a travel nurse so he can schedule some time off. Better do it now while I can, I think he's about to get engaged and married next summer. God Bless you Chris!
Thanks for following along & all the kind words, Mr Ken! Hope you enjoyed the sights & sounds of the OHT. Unfortunately, I spent my Fathers Day working a 12hr shift. But yes, my wife & I are blessed with 5 kids, & now a grandson. I’m not sure I’ll have a backpacker amongst them - but my hope is to inspire them to be adventurous, step out of there comfort zone & do hard & challenging things in life. Whatever they choose to do!
@@DixonHikes As for your Father's Day, you did what a good Dad does, support his family. As for hiking: I found that starting them with short day hikes was a say to see if any interest was in them. Look forward to more of your great work.
Nice I’m doin 3 days in August excited 😆
Man, hope there’s some water flowing out there so you can cool off!
We just watched the entire hike. Very impressive and inspiring, sir.
Thanks for watching! Hope you enjoyed the sights & sounds of the OHT!
Is this the big piney river
This is the Buffalo National River.
@@DixonHikes when I was a teen, we rode horses at the national scenic trail ride, near fort Leonard Wood. Beautiful country great memories
Enjoyed the OHT series. I love the Arkansas trails in the early springtime.
Thanks for following along! Early spring is the best time of year for a hike like this IMO. Water everywhere. 12 hours of daylight. No bugs. Birds chirping. Great views with leaf-off, & watching the forest come alive with each passing day.
@@DixonHikes I meant to ask why at 4:33 you labeled it "The Narrows" instead of "The Nars" 😁
Oh, Y’know. For the non-Arkie-talkin’-folk out there. 😅
I'm so proud of you!!! Another amazing thru hike down and I know you'll do amazing next year too. #bestdadever 💗💗💗
Daddy is more proud of you! Love you! 😘
Enjoying your videos! What was the animal that ran by at 7:24?
Thanks for watching, Brad! All I see is a Sasquatch flappin’ his gums @ 7:24 😅
I was watching in low quality and see now it was just something in a tree. 😆
There is a trail that goes through the community I live in here in S.E. KY. Bald Rock KY. The Sheltowee Trace. I was originally from Pope County AR. Love your videos.
Thanks for watching, Gary. The Sheltowee Trace is on my to-do list!
@@DixonHikesThe southern end of the trail in Ky and Tenn is rough, rough, rough.
I'm heading up to Harrison sometime this summer to visit my stepaunt, so I've got to go check out that bluff at the 8:11 mark. The only problem is that I'm an extremely inexperienced hiker, so im not sure if it would be safe, especially doing it alone, since I won't have anyone to hike with lol..
Nice. It’s wider than it looks on camera, you can do it! Just take plenty of water for the climb back up to the Centerpoint Trailhead.
Congrats on another successful thru hike of the OHT. The Narrows looked sick and those overlooks on the BRT were pretty sweet too. I enjoyed following along on this one ✌
Thanks for following along, bro! What an incredible hike this was. Time to plan the next one!
Hail to the Yeah!! 07
Thanks for watching & helping to maintain this gorgeous trail, Skint!
Good job, brother. Some of those view points up on those mountain ridges looked dangerous lol. But the burning question is, was the 2 mile hike in the rain to DQ worth it? Haha.
Dude, I would’ve hiked 5 miles in the rain for that fish basket & fried apple pie!
Do you have a video of when you finished at woolum? Or have I just missed it in the search? Enjoyed all of your videos!
It’s scheduled for Sunday 5/26 @ 9am. Thanks for watching!
Another fantastic video!! What a great experience to capture the eclipse on your thru hike!!
Thanks, y’all. The eclipse was insane! So glad I planned this hike around it, so worth it!
Great videos, man! You really present it all so well. Looks like a great hike, too.
Thanks man. Incredible hike! 10/10 recommend.
Another lovely video! Cool that you were able to experience the eclipse on trail!
The Eclipse was incredible! Ouachita Trail 2045 for the next one! 😂
What a video!!! So proud babe. Got fuzzy butt falls and the eclipse in one video! 😍
Got to that intersection & asked myself “do you have time?” I said “MAKE TIME!” As you well know Darlin’, definitely worth the 2 mile side trip to ole Fuzzybutt!
Nice to see in the comments that you got your spoon back. Great hike!
Nothing like the backpacking community!
You got lucky. When I went through mothers day weekend it was nothing but poison ivy and mud and sharp rocks!!! Horrible trip with no views. 4 bears in 3 miles though.
I can only imagine. Wasn’t in great shape when I hiked through there, either. Hwy 7 east doesn’t get near the traffic as the western end of the OHT. Appears most people skip the trail from mile 138-143 & just walk Falling Water Rd to Richland campground, too (Judging by the tread) which offers some of the best views of the entire trail, IMO. I went back up there to retrieve my food buckets 2 weeks after I finished, & the Ozarks had turned full jungle!
Good views for the eclipse.
Not too shabby. Had it to myself up there. The Narrows would’ve been an epic spot to view it as well. Totality blew my mind - I was speechless.
Another great video Chris! Your excellent videos show how wonderful the mountains are in Arkansas. I'm thinking of looking at this and the Ouachita Trail vs. the AT. Look forward to following you the rest of the way on this hike, hoping you are blessed with success and safety.
Ken, please reach out if I can be of any help in the planning of a OT or OHT hike!
@@DixonHikes Thank you Chris, will do!
Especially enjoyed this one as I took the high water bypass when I did this section. Looks like a beautiful area! Happy to see in the comments that your spoon was found!
Christina came in clutch! Made my day!
High water bypass on top is where i camped after crossing Hurricane Creek. I was never so glad to be in my tent.
How high was it when you crossed? On my section hike it was over waist high, freezing & MOVING. Was lifting me up. Absolutely terrifying!
@DixonHikes waist deep when I crossed. I had my feet almost taken out from under me. My trekking poles were vibration from the fast flowing water. After I crossed, I lay down on that big flat rock trying to warm up.
Yikes! I’m enjoying your Ozark Trail vids. Should I hike it?
@DixonHikes The video that just went up is my last one. I got off at the halfway mark. Blisters on feet and sleeping pad not holding. Was looking at 3 days of 80 degree days. It has some good views but mostly a walk in the woods. I plan on going back in the fall and finishing it. It's a good trail all in all. It would be a good hike for you.
I’m still nursing blisters from the OHT. Nothing worse than a leaky sleeping pad on trail! I’ll take a nice walk in the woods over road walking or shared horse trail any day of the week. Ozark Trail hasn’t been on my short list, but just might plan it for spring ‘25.
Man!!! I felt that ending... watching the sunset soaking your feet contenplating. Yup!!! Thats why i hike!! Keepem coming!!! Doing Richland camp to stack rock friday. Making it a 2 night event.
Man, it’s THOSE moments I cherish most when I look back at my hikes. My backpacking journey has been all about self-discovery. Connecting with nature is very powerful, life changing even. I always say: you wanna know about someone? Go play 18 holes of golf with them. Wanna know about yourself? Go on a long hike, solo! Have a great hike. Enjoy the boulder fields of Richland! Some beautiful creeks/drainages through there.
I have your spoon!!
YAAASSSS! Thank you, Christina! I just got a text from Mark that you reached out to him - he gave me your #. I’ll text ya!
Oh, & if you look closely @ 6:45 you make an appearance in my video! Ha
I saw it!! Ha ha too funny! You should have your spoon tomorrow or Friday. Loving the videos!
OHTA just a trail maint. dude.. 07 Bro !! Spring Creek to Moccasin Springs TH ebo is pretty kool. "The stepchild section" to Norfork/Matney. Norfork is the ONLY town the OHT actually goes through.. But due to the "Wilderness" from Dillards Ferry to Spring Creek. js. Politics.
Nice! I’ll hike the Sylamore section this winter, more than likely. And I need to clean up Grinders to Dillards Ferry. Mentally, I checked out of this hike as soon as I got on the BRT. Horse 💩 all over the trail, horse 💩 in the creek beds, & all that road walking - just doesn’t do it for me after hiking through basically pristine wilderness for 160 miles.
The hiking gods are smiling on you, my friend! Great weather, cricks are flowing, no other people in sight, and a hotel pizza night!?...sheesh. Awesome Arkansas wilderness video capturing action in the meantime too! Looking forward to Hurricane Creek...one of my fav places! Steady as she goes!
Hell yeah, man! Only time I got wet in 12 days was a 2-mile hike on Hwy 65 in Marshall to the Daisy Queen for a fish basket & fried apple pie. Late night second dinner Dominoes run was a must!
The water flowing is absolutely beautiful ❤️❤️ it’s all beautiful
Nice job! I'm sure you were beyond ready for ALL the town food! You capture the scenery very well.
Thank you, Catherine. The calorie deficit was real after the first 3 days. Hard for me to eat when it’s that hot/humid, all the food is dry, & drinking 6-7 liters of water a day. Made up for it when I got to town though!
Cedar creek was really cool with the water flowing.
Love that area. I could live down there.
Lots of good water falls
So many waterfalls, around every corner it feels like.
