"Woodcutters" That's his masterpiece. Also, "The Loser" poses a very serious question: why does one keep on living, getting up everyday? I think if most people pursued this question with deep seriousness it would greatly upset them, for they would find no real answer.

Fun fact: I met my partner while reading The Satanic Verses. I looked up from the pages, saw her, and romantic history followed. At one point she asked what I had been reading-talk about a hefty conversation starter. Glad you're covering this book. You've reminded me of elements I've forgotten.

That was great - I read it back when it came out and loved it but maybe one day I should reread it now I have a better understanding of more challenging books! Midnights children is also wonderful but I feel that few of his novels have lived up to these two for me. His nonfiction, on the other hand, is brilliant and I highly recommend Imaginary Homelands, Step Across this Line, Languages of Truth and Joseph Anton.

Sounds so interesting! Love midnight's children and ground beneath her feet. Sad it's still banned here in India. That London pun is truly cringe. I think Rushdie (atleast in the books I have read) has the habit of getting carried away. Sometimes he tries too hard to show how clever he is.

Great video and concept! Though I'm not sure if I agree on the Dostojewski/Tarkovsky, as I feel as though Tarkovsky gives his scenes far more room to breathe, whereas Dostojewski is more convoluted, especially in regard to plot

So, to those who liked the film Parasite (2019) I'd recommend Edogawa Rampo's short story 'The Human Chair' Both works create the same sense of unease through the idea of people-as-parasites co-living with others, though I'd say Rampo pushes this idea even further.

If you are aiming for simple beauty, start with GLORY. GLORY reincarnates as my favorite of his novels THE GIFT. PNIN is a great starting point for most happy readers.

Don't start with Lolita as it will ruin you forever. You will never read anything else as perfectly written as that book.

I loved Crying of Lot 49, Really enjoyed Inherent Vice (one of my favorite movies), enjoyed Against the Day, but man, I wasn't a fan of Vineland. I give it a 3 out of 5 stars. I like forward momentum in my story and the retracing of characters stories and lives, all away from the main narrative was absolutely annoying.

I just started this. I had the book for I don't know exactly, maybe 30 years languishing on a shelf. Every time I went to find a book to read I would say to myself, oh look, there's Borges ... scary. I had a feeling that he would be like Lovecraft or Poe and while I respect those authors, I don't enjoy reading them. Finally, as I live in a neighbouring country to Argentina and after hearing someone talk about him online, I decided to give him a go. At the same time I bought the complete short stories in Spanish so I can parallel read them to help with my spanish. I have read Marquez and while both are considered 'Magic Realism' Borges is about ideas and so far as I can tell after 3 stories less so about characters while Marquez is all about human affairs and people. I think Borges is very European while Marquez is grounded in Latin American (culture) and there is a magic to this part of the world which is so different to the magic (not literal magic that is) of other parts. You would never get a Tolkien or Harry Potter out of this part (LA) of the world.

I just watched Maria's video and posted a very long comment over there. I spent my whole night just writing it. One thing I like in your video is that you dwell a little more on the narrator, which is uncommon in the critical literature about this short story. Most people go directly to the literary puzzle and its philosophical implications. I also like in both videos that both of you went back to Cervantes's Don Quijote to confront the texts, which for Borges was certainly a must. "Pierre Ménard" always reminds me of another short story from Julio Cortázar, also an Argentine writer, called "El perseguidor". I think it was translated into English as "The Pursuer". You might find it particularly interesting because it is about a particular version of the reader/writer pair (or spectator/creator), namely, that between critic and artist, more specifically, jazz critic and jazz musician. I would like very much to see what would your take be on that. Great video. Cheers.

I'm very surprised to see this video pop up in my recommendation. The edition of Matilda that you are holding there is the edition that which I read as a child. Besides it I've read a great deal of Roald Dahl books in Chinese translation. Reading literacy in Simplified Chinese may look daunting as people tend to hype it up a great deal, but I'd say a command of around 3000 characters (If I am not wrong you need to at least know 5000 to read decently through a children's book written in English?) is enough for you to read relatively fluently through children's book. Reading in a foreign language is a grind, but if you really enjoy it, it is also a magical, magical experience. Sometimes I am touched by very minute details of phrases of daily register in foreign languages where a native speaker might not even realise it until I've pointed it out to them. I hope you enjoy your reading journey. Good luck.

Nabokov is one of my favourite authors, but I started with Lolita when I was a teenager and for me personally it was not the smartest idea😅 My favorite so far is Ada or Ardor, but I haven’t read Pale fire yet! Also, The Gift is great (and The real life of Sebastian Knight is another good starting point in my opinion)

The first Nabokov book I read was Laughter In the Dark and I loved it! Similar to Lolita in a few ways. His shorts are also very good. This has given me a good list - thanks!
