Sodium ion cordless drill battery

The full video of making a sodium ion cordless drill battery for my 20 year old Ryobi. It came with nickel cadmium cells that are long pooched. I have decided to NOT use a BMS with these cells but will instead monitor their balance over many charge/discharge cycles to see how they perform. Sodium ion has far less energy density than lithium ion. It will not be very practical for professional us...

    Wow this is awesome to see. A buddy of mine wanted to eff around one day and used a pipe cutter to take the top off of an samsung 25r one day and throw it in a bucket of water. He didn't believe me that it would be a massive explosion. I stood about 30ft back. I wish I would have got it on video I pissed myself laughing

      FAFO! When I went into this, I knew that I was going to have a massive energy release. But I also knew that it wasn't going to catch fire. Initially, I did expect that it would just release the pressure through the pressure relief valve. But in retrospect, you can see that so much pressure was released so quickly that the pressure relief valve pretty much blew right off the end. I wouldn't do the same test with a lipo cell.

    what batteries are beter for scooter 18650 or pouch cell of ncm for 72v 55ah?

    • @diyelectrified1289
      @diyelectrified1289 23 дні тому

      NCM pouch cells will give you the highest density of energy and a very high continuous current output. Unfortunately they are very fragile and usually have a low cycle count (500 to 1000 charge/discharge to 80%) 18650s are well known and reliable, but I do not like them personally. I think 32700's, 4680's, or prismatic Lifpo4 are better for longevity and safety.

      @@dimitris000bourgos I think that you are saying is one or two cells can go bad in an 18650 battery pack and that you can simply replace the bad cells. I don't know if you have ever done this before but I have and it is a big mess because of the way they are spot welded together. A battery made from pouch cells is slightly more repairable but dangerous (at least in the way that I configured my pouch cells) to mess around with because one short can cause a big fire. Prismatics are much easier to work with though if one cell goes bad, it's quite expensive to replace.

      I am using a cheap AliExpress spot welder that I modified. It's not even worth mentioning. All it needed to do was have the switching transistors and I provided the power feed. Each cell is only 1,300 milliamp hours which is really low and almost not worth it for a motorcycle battery, but I'm still going to experiment with them.

    So... no volcano but still not exactly safer. I imagine that explosion could still blow your hand up nice. Not off- but up. So in theory... in a pocket- better but still not great. Car? I dunno... the housing around the cells would need still to contain that (larger in this case) potential explosion. Cheaper than lithium maybe- if it's not squandered and hiked up in price just because it's new. Lipo might suddenly be cheaper because nobody will want them compared to a safer option.... the future sounds bleak with that notion.
