Nikon Z8 Pixel Shift Shooting - Hype or Great?
Hey Stuart! It's Carol from Scotty Makes Stuff here😀. Thanks so much for the lovely review! I hear you on a water-resistant case. It's not quite in our 'wheelhouse' yet, but I think we will get there by the time there's a Pocket 4🙂
Just got a Z8 and while I appreciated other reviewers talking about the autofocus system, I feel like this video was the only one where something "clicked" for me. Just came back from an outing using these settings and the difference was noticeable (including using 3D Autofocus which I just wrote off as being as "good" as it was on the D850).
I spent a good month filming and photographing tree swallows Spring 2024, diving for mosquitos and larvae in a local pond/wetlands. That was extra challenging using my micro 4/3 Panasonic G9 with the Lumix 100-400 Leica vario elmar lens. I got a few great shots that are showcased in my latest wildlife/nature photography demo reel. Using the cropped sensor in a tight narrow viewpoint was the biggest challenge. I learned that you really got to pay close attention to their patterns of flight and behavior, while being ready to follow them instantly. You almost have to have a psychic ability, at the very least analytical, highly observant with fast reflexes to capture them. I recently sold my camera and lenses to upgrade to Full Frame, considering getting the Nikon Z6iii for so many extra benefits my last camera didn't have.
Thank you!!!
Thanks Stu, love your choice of music to enhance this video ! Don.
Many thanks!
Excellent video, you are so right that Vancouver Island has so much to photograph. I have lived on V.I. for 75 years and it has only been the last 15 years since I retired and got into wildlife photography that I realized what we really have on our island. I just have started to get into a little video work as well but I am still in the learning process. Thanks for sharing and I am really enjoying your videos.
Thanks Keith, that is the great thing with wildlife photography that places you get to go in search of your subjects. Cheers
Really great explanation of the various AF options for birds. I'm currently still shooting with the D500 and 200-500mm but trying to decide whether it'd be best to swap to the Z8 with the 200-500 or get a used 500mm f4 for the D500 instead. Thanks for the video.
Absolutely no question get the Z8, my 200-500 feels like a new lens on it.
@@raincoastphoto Thanks very much, I think you're right. I can always save for a 600pf later :) BTW I' really appreciate the time you've taken to explain the modes you use and the circumstances you use each in. I definitely approve of the keeping it as simple as possible method, given the plethora of options the mirrorless cameras have available. Thanks again.
How do you deal with CC and a Arca plate ? I have multiple CC setups and the problem is hub and the arca plate conflict in location. I am concerned with the stress you put on the lens mount, but I do like your idea of using the safety strap hooking under the lens foot.
The short answer is an Allen Key lol. I do have the arca swiss adapter from CC which works ok www.cottoncarrier.com/collections/attachments/products/ccs-universal-tripod-adapter . 99% of the time I have my long lens on so the the carrier works fine, but if I am going out for a landscape or Real estate shoot I just take the CC Hub off. I always have a Smallrig Cage on my Z8. So have the arca plate on that.
Quite an extensive field testing of the great techniques. Really like the way you have setup you camera. The system still needs refinement hence an option for manual control of AF point is prudent. 👍 Great
I have had the Scarpa SLM boots for 15 years and they've been fantastic. Sadly, they don't make them anymore. Will be looking to get a similar pair and likely will get the SL Actives. I prefer no gtx lining and it's so hard to find these days, especially in large sizes (size 50)/15+). One thing I am dissapointed with is that Scarpa made the SLM's in a std and wide width, and the SL Actives just come in one width. Since I'm a narrow, I hope they will fit.
damn, those are some incredible shots these are really tough subject to capture.. amazing work man
What was your focal length with the Saw-Whets?
500mm and 700mm
Hi, will this feature slows down the AF focus? Someone told to switch off this to maximise AF performance. True? Thanks
hmm, not that I have noticed but I think it's a bit more complex than that. I have it set to turn on when I get down to 1/30 of a second so at that point the screen does black out a bit and then it may impact af a bit. But a slightly slower af is not nearly as much of an issue at the slower shutter speeds.
What shutter speed are you using for the barn swallows?
I had good light for this shoot so was shooting very high 1/3200s to 1/8000s
Just deleted all my previous focus settings, this set up is by far the best recommended set up on YT. Subscribed. May your channel exceed 1m followers 👏
Awesome, thank you! I really appreciate the comment, a ton of work goes into the setup videos so it's really great to hear feedback like that. Cheers
Great video, as a Nikon Z8 shooter who primarily shoots photos, this is very helpful as I've been looking to transition to some more video work.
I recently bought a used Cotton Carrier G3 in black that is basically brand new. The photographer just didn't use it after the first time. Got it for less than half the price, so it was worth it. I'm looking forward to using it for hiking. I don't have a huge lens and I have a mirrorless camera, so it should be even more comfortable for me. I've been using a sling style strap that worked fine, but I don't like how the camera flops around on trail. I was glad to hear your perspective regarding build quality and durability. The only thing I'm not sure how I'll work out is what to do if I want to use my camera on a tripod. I do have a L bracket which may solve the problem. Thanks for the overview!!
Yeah that is the one thing I struggle with a bit as well. I probably shoot 90% or higher with my long lens so not a huge deal breaker and I just take the hub off if I plan on shooting landscapes or real estate. Cotton Carrier does make a hub with an arca-swiss plate built into that works well, but because I always have my Small Rig cage on my Nikon Z8 I don't use it anymore.
@@raincoastphoto I did see that hub they make, but it's another purchase. I saw 3 Legged Thing just came out with a new version of their L bracket. They added a quick release function. But, right now it only is for one camera, an OM/Olympus.
Thanks for sharing. Is that PU midsole soft as shock absorbing? Subscribed
Its not bad, but it's made more for support and durability. I put Super Feet insoles in them which seems to make for a nice combo
I have a set with roller hardware. 7 years backpack hunting in them all over BC. Been incredible. I dont know how many miles of sidehilling with 60+ lb pack. Just this year the heel lining has worn through. Other than that they have held up superbly. Hoping that my new kinesis gtx hold up half as well. If i can find someone to put new heel lining in im sure ill get another 7 years out of the SL activs
That's great to hear, with the leather heel lining you should be able to find a good cobbler to replace it.

Does the Z8 record sound along with the 120fps video? TY
yes it records audio at all of the frame rates, just that playback may not line up if you slow it down
Thank you Exactly what I was looking for. No explains it like you 👍
You're welcome! Glad it helped
Thanks for the great tutorial!!

Very good data...... Thanks for sharing.

Excellent video - thank you very much. I was interested to see you using the wide area focus mode which appears to work extremely well. Have you ever used this mode to capture whales and dolphins?
Funny you should ask I have just started working on my Shooting Bank C setup which will be wildlife specific and you guessed it the wide area focus will be my preferred focus for that setup. I have been using it on seals and it works great so should be an excellent choice for whale watching as well. Cheers
aww, lovely footage, thanks for sharing it and greetings from a random european who loves this little fellows and stumbled upon your channel while researching how and where to spot them in bc
Thank you very much! I hope you get to see them when you are here. The one thing is they are much smaller than you may think. Such cute little critters and fun to watch.
Thank you for your efforts in explaining your setups.. I am coming from a Z6 for 6 yrs, loving the Auto Tracking but working through the Bank settings as best as possible. You said something about a 3 hr Video coming, will look for that as anything you can suggest to make Shooting easier will much appreciated.. Thanks again, Ken in AZ🌵
Thanks Ken, I think the 3 hr video ended up being broken into the many shooting bank and setup videos that followed that one. i am currently working on my wildlife settings video for mammals that will hopefully be out in a week or two. Cheers
The Canyon Wren (Catherpes mexicanus) is pretty common in the surroundings of my home town down here in Central Mexico (Cortazar, Guanajuato) since I can hear it almost everytime I go to a country house that I own. His unmistakble call woke me up some days ago in the town itself so it let me know it is present there too. His singing was hear at 6.24 in the video. By the way, I'd like to film the wildlife around here like you do. What equipment do I need?
That's so cool, I have to travel to the BC interior in order to catch them here in Canada. For gear I am a huge Nikon fan, the Nikon Z8 is the camera I use and would highly recommend if the budget allows along with the 180-600mm Nikon lens. The Nikon z6iii would be a great option as well for a few thousand less. Cheers
HI: Greetings from the sunny Okanagan again. Been setting up my shooting banks and came across something that may help me with sorting in post. After naming them somewhat like you suggested - I then when thru and set up the names for each 'Storage Folder' that each bank uses and the prefix for each file naming the same. If I have shot in all 4 modes then I have 4 folders to download and the images in each folder begin with a name associated to the folder. EG: Bank 'A' is my General/ Colour - Storage folder is number 101 - name is AZA_1 so - the folder is downloaded as 101AZA_1. File naming is AZA - image #899 shot using bank A would be named _AZA0899 (I shoot in Adobe Colour Space) Once I get everything dialed in and ready to save I plan on using an old small SD card to keep the baseline on so that I can always get back to my baseline settings. Your thoughts? Bruce B
Hey Bruce, I see where you are going with it and could see it being useful for sure. I have in the past used different import settings in Lightroom based on ISO, so different edit settings were applied. It worked great for that generation of software but what I found was as the software evolved those setting all changed (adobe or topaz denoise etc) and with new cameras a lot of things are constantly changing. And i find now if I need an image I will almost always re-edit it anyway. I keep everything pretty simple now with just a name change on import name_date_cameraprefix ie.Clarke_240812_8435 This way all files will line up in order in lightroom by name. It is a great idea to use an sd card to save your baseline. I do find that my baseline tends to evolve over time so make sure to keep it updated as well. Cheers
@@raincoastphoto Thanks for the feedback. Always great to hear a different point of view.
For a new Z8 user this is great info. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Amazing
Thank you! Cheers!
You are the truly the best
Thanks Gille
Hi Great as usual. For some reason I cant get my Z8 IBIS going with the 200-500.
You may be right, just the lens VR being active with F mount. I know the IBIS engages with non VR lenses, so was assuming was also working with my 200-500 which has great VR on its own. I will have to test it and see.
Great footage Raincoast. Canada should be replacing our obsolete jet fighters with these wonderful aircraft. A much more better use of tax dollars. Thanks. Please send some of your rain coast rain to the Okanagan.
I agree with you, i just wish that was the world we lived in, with no need for the fighter jets as well. Yeah we got just a bit of rain hardly enough to spread around, hopefully the Okanagan sees some rain soon, with a La Nina coming this fall we will all be hoping for the rain to stop soon enough.
In the case of fire fighting aircraft, bigger is much better.
Not necessarily, the steep terrain and smaller lakes on the south island here actually work against the larger planes, but having all options available for different locations is the ideal situation
