Best bike you'll ever own the 1985 had some problems with the shaft drive you might want to get a new shaft drive you know use like a 92 or something it's in good shape and just reinstall that if it's a real 85 shaft drive that's still on it try to get one that's you know out of the 80s and the 90s cuz they fix the problems by then and it'll be the best bike you ever owned that motor is fucking bulletproof

OK. But what a pain to have to remember to turn on a switch every time you think you'll be needing the fan to come on earlier than designed by the Yamaha factory guys. I agree that Yamaha designed the Vmax and it's temp gauge in a way that is worrisome to the eye with that red line being momentarily crossed before fan activation. Why not simply put in a different coolant temp switch that'll have the fan kick on each and every time the temp gets above the middle mark on the gauge and never have to worry about flipping switches again? It's what I did to my 85 over 30 years ago, and it's still working to this day. Wish I could remember the Borg-Warner part number I bought for the changeout, but it's been too long ago. I bet the guys on the gen 1 Vmax forum would still have that info available.
