How much foes it cost to feed 200
How do you give them water? I don't see a water system.
Water hose and 5 gallon pans multiple times each day.
Where can I buy purebred land raise Hampshire guilts and purebred stock Berkshire males so I can start me a good breed of hogs? And can I pay to have them shipped to my farm?
what sort of records do you keep?
Humane and not cruel like gestation crates. Good for you
Would you be kind to share to us some ideas for sow feeding formula! From gilts to pregnant and lactating sows? Please!🙏
Did you chop those corn stalks before putting it in the barn or you just put the whole corn stalks and let the pigs works on it?
Hi just watched this video . Your set up in awesome 😎. I just had a couple of questions. What do you use for their water ? And how high are the fences ? Do you ever have any that climb over them ?
What kind of nursing sow ration are you feeding ?
I use Kent premix, soybean meal, corn and a mycotoxin binder.
A lovely nursery setup <3 the sows always look so peaceful and content while feeding their babies! there must be some discomfort with all those little mouths to feed!
What breed are your sows and gilts?
Cross bred with a variety.
What state are you in?
Iowa
Are your pens still 8x8.
They are actually closer to 10x8. I will say I do find the more square footage I have the less crushing I have. Doesn’t seem to take a lot of extra square feet to make a big difference
Enjoy your videos please dont stop!!
Thank you! I’m trying to do better posting than I used to!
Glad to see your videos again. You are raising hogs the right way.
Thanks! I hope you subscribe!
Can you sell everything direct to the consumer? Do you sell feeder pigs? I do not see how the big commercial guys can make money in this market.
I sell a lot direct to consumer. I also have a larger, niche market company buy hogs from me and many other farms like mine.
You haven't really followed this up with any further videos did it work or not ?
Yes, it works great! In a more recent video I kind of detailed how I made some poor man's upgrades.
Do you have a wallowing area for the pigs specially for the sow
Kind of. I will put sprinklers on the walls sometimes too.
Do you run more than one boar together with the sows?
I run 3 boars. with 20-25 sows.
My friend, you made a huge mistake by filling in your pits.... We're is the piss go ? Now your air quality goes bad in winter real fast , because bedding is wet. I do like the loose house set up. And believe in this way of hog production. Greetings from Alberta Canada
Greetings! Thank you for the comment. However, filling the pits was the best thing I did. Each of the six pits had drains in them. I ran a PVC up out of the drains and concreted the pits shut but kept the drains open. Now, all the urine runs into the drains and out of the shed. Works great.
Ok Miller nice huck up fam
Thanks 👍
Good that the sows are in open pens, but I would love to see the hogs having access to pasture. That is what I do, then in the winter I feed 3rd cutting alfalfa to everyone, especially those that i am feeding out, but I do feed it all year to my boar and sows when they are not outside. You can just see the health benefits of feeding it.
While the sows are gestating they have lots of outdoor access. Not on pasture, but outside nonetheless.
How many sows do you have ?
Approximately 50
How tall off the ground is your safe area for your piglets? We have some due soon and are trying to get their farrowing pens in order but we aren’t sure of the right height.
It varies. I'd say about 8 inches for the most of them, but it can be higher or shorter honestly.
Would love to talk with you about your farrowing setup. I farrowed out on pasture this season and didn't have the best results. Want to try something else this spring. Thanks Kipp
Any time. What's your number?
Pls very good can't you send me copy plan of the design the pan
It's a 10ish x 8ish pen with a 3/4" plywood board on wood legs at a diagonal in the back for a safety area. On the side opposite the diagonal plywood I just get crooked 2x4s from the local lumber yard for a "bumper board." Helps keeping the pigs from getting laid on.
I didn't know there was any other breed other than Berkshire... cute blue butts tho.. lol
Good set up
Thank you. Hopefully you tune into some of our new videos.
How many sows do you farrow. You farrow sows the way we did in the 70s. Best way.
50 sows is the goal.
you should upload more often!
Just started uploading again! lol
Looking forward to seeing how y’all are doing things.. I’m old school.. things have changed
Started getting back on the video posting again. Hope you tune in.
Can you show us the new hog shed?
Yes, I will try to do a new hog shed video here directly.
👍👍
Thanks! Tune into the new videos!
My piglets are 3 days old an mom keeps squishing them what can I do it's my 1st time
Do you have a safety area with heat bulbs in the corner or rear of the pen? How about a "bumber" board so the sow cannot lay down directly against the pen sides? Bedded well?
👍👍
Thanks, tune in to the new videos.
Hello
Howdy!
Old school, I like it.
Thanks! Just started posting videos again. Hopefully you take a look.
I looking for farrowing setup for 2 sows. Please and Thank you
This set up would work well for two sows. Very simple and easy to use.
@@millerpremiumpork Thank you. Did you have the metal welded up or something you purchased
@@virginiawatkins2821 They were custom gates at one point, but I just reused them.
Reused the custom gates that is good idea. So you must know how to weld.
Thank you for sharing
You bet. Just got some new videos uploaded.
Looks awesome. Hope you share some video when you get the sows in the barn with piglets
Going to do a video tonight. Farrowing now.
Good to see some videos. Keep them coming
Going to do a video tonight. Farrowing now.
I would love to see it with the sows in and again when they farrow
Going to do a video tonight. Farrowing now.
Can we see more of your farrowing area?
I just posted a new vidoe right now of the farrowing house. Take a look. Pens are 9'7'' (gate length I had on hand) x 8'. I will do a video here shortly for my current farrowing with pen set up as well.
Looks like you switched up the breeds while you’ve been away.
Yes, I went with crossbred sows. Increased my weaning numbers from 8ish to around 11 pigs/sow.
What are you feeding piglets after weaning for how many weeks until you change feed to a maintenance feed? Really like all your information on pigs. Thank you
After weaning I feed a ration with no soybean meal. It is just premix, corn and rolled oats. In my opinion the rolled oats is very important to reduce scours. The premix I use is also a Kent Next Gen Product. The name is "NP Mixer." It is a more complete premix with all the protein they need so I don't need soybean meal. It is generally less than one ton before I move on to my 4 finisher rations.
@@millerpremiumpork Good morning, Thank you for getting back to me. Okay. Next question i am only doing two litters twice a year. I run may be 20 baby pigs twice a year. How long after weaning would you recommend the babies staying on the dry COB? Hope your getting nice weather. Ours here is nice for a few then get cooler again. Thank you again
@@virginiawatkins2821 What is "COB?"
@@millerpremiumpork rolled corn, oats and barley
@@virginiawatkins2821 I usually just run oats in my 1st nursery ration and that is it. I have gone longer if I feel they have some scours issues.
Welcome back! i just found your channel! I grew up in Northeast Iowa and now live in the Central Valley of California. I'm blessed that I've got some space from my father in law that I can start up a very small farrow to finish operation, (maybe 5-6 sows). I was just out there today, doing something else, looking at the pens and thinking to myself "how am I going to farrow these pigs?!?" Then I found your other video on old school farrowing. Great idea! If you're still looking for video ideas, i'd say video the things that you do when you're taking care of the pigs (or crops). maybe a day or two after farrowing, some positives and negatives you had to deal with, showing the pens with the litters. Weaning, deworming etc. with the same positives and negatives...Heck video tape moving the sows and separating the feeders...you get the idea. I hope you're little guy is helping you maybe some of the two of you at work... and lastly, fyi...my stepdad graduated Mid-Prairie! back in '71. I think i had some cousins got to Washington, but we're not that close.
Thank you for the ideas! Keep watching I promise I will use them! I went to Wartburg College so I'm familiar with NE Iowa. And crazy how small the world is. Holler if you need have any questions. I am by no means an expert, but I have definitely made mistakes and learned from them and found things that worked better than others. I have a Facebook page: @millerpork if you ever want to message me.
I had my first litter last night. The piglets would rather shiver next to mom than go on the protected heat lamp area. Any suggestions?
Good news! How are they doing? 1st step is to get the pigs dry and get them colostrum. I use potatoe starch drying powder and a towel right when they are born. As soon as she begins to farrow I also add extra bedding. When you see them cold and shivering you will have more pile and get laid on but I keep adding fresh bedding under the heat lamp and I will keep moving them under there. Also, try playing with your heat lamp height. Needs to be pretty low when cold. If they start to circle around the light or move away from it then raise it up.
I was thoroughly entertained. thank you for the value of your time
Thank you! Hopefully you tune into some of our new videos.
what do you do when you have more pigs than you have customers to buy in the beginning?
I have now partnered with @nimanranch and they are great to work with!
What type of floor are they on?
Sorry for the delayed response but they are on poured concrete.
