The Best and Worst Spell Changes in DnD 2024
There is a lot of great advice in this video. Really great advice! Just having the barest of bare bone outlines for an adventure is a Godsend for organization and campaign building. And like you said, the easiest starting point is "where are you going" and "how do you get there"
Be evil they have to deliver a package to the wizard tower within 30 minutes. If they don't make it, the wizard does not pay them because dominos is free after 30.
all good tips!
this is a really cool guide and seems super useful!!
As someone looking to undertake the role of the GM im curious what kind of “punishment” you find out in a situation where the party DOESNT convince the hermit to draw the map. I want to include things like this but struggle with how to deal with party failure.
That’s a really great question! In DnD, you’ll hear a lot of people recommend that your players “fail forward.” So instead of the hermit saying no, banishing them from his home, and having things come screeching to a hault, the failure instead brings complications. Instead of getting a map for free, he wants them to pick an acorn from a tree guarded by a dryad for him. Or he’ll draw it, but only if one of them leaves him a vial of their blood - who knows why he wants it! They can fail the negotiation AND get the map, it just now comes at a cost. The alternative would be planning multiple scenarios for finding the map: They can have the hermit draw it, or haggle with a nearby hag, or find a play cartographer who went missing in the woods. More work on your part, but it’ll ensure they always have a door open when others close. Hope that helps! DMing is my favorite part of the game, so I hope you take it on!
I love your delivery style. Great video! I think sometimes newer GMs can get into their heads about all they need. It can actually be a lot simpler!
Thank you so much! And I agree, there's this feeling that everything has to be grand, complex and the most original story every told. When really just tossing your players into a cave full of goblins will often yield a bunch of fun moments!
Great video. We all need to hear that we can. Thank you.
Thanks, even for experienced DMs I think it's good to remember the basics every now and again!
Wait... didn't this guys get out of prison (Ravenloft) by shouting the N word at the mists until they cancelled him?
Thanks for this. I was already not very interested in the 2024 edition, now I'm really not interested.
Glad I could help! I still need to play it more for my own full thoughts!
The king of legislichure
Not bad! Wish I’d thought of that one!
I think I would make the base game a 2x payout instead to make it enticing. A 1/36th chance of only doubling your bet isn’t even close to worth it and only uneducated or addicted gamblers would involve themselves, since I have a nearly 40% chance to do the same playing blackjack. If you make the payout more lucrative then you might pull players to the table
Makes sense! I think a bigger payout is a good change, thanks!
Vecna is an expert in lichigation. I’d definitely consider hiring Zariel as well.
Another great player prosecutor!
For "Make up your own Monsters Stats": THANK YOU! I fully agree. So much better than that.
There’s definitely a time and place for “nudging” things, but completely making it all up? Not a fan, glad you agree!
On point one, i also should allow all DMs know this: If you're not comfortable, then don't allow it. If you want a sword and sorcery game, it is a okay to ban Artificer. It clashes with the entire rest of the game.
100%! The game has to be fun for the DM, too!
Hard agree on all!
Thank you! Glad you’re on the same page!
Extreme agree!
Thank you!
Tiamat is the DA (Draconic-Aspect) many Judges appreciate in their court. But to get her attention, many human sacrifices and cult rituals are required (Lunch at a Nice Italian Restaurant may substitute no more than 40% of Cult Rituals).
For sure! Olive Garden can get you 20%, but only if Tiamat just won a big case and is in a good mood
Wonderful ^^.
Glad you enjoyed it!
New mercenary for hire in my campaign, acquired. The eighth level party will be ecstatic to gain the support of a level 20 paladin.
That’s just rude! But I love it!
Love these videos, this one was particularly fun. Can see the amount of work you put into this one.
Thank you, always want to keep getting better and make them even more fun! Glad you’re enjoying them!
Nice quick simple game to be fair, I’ll definitely give it a go and see how it goes and report back.
Thanks, love to hear any feedback you have!
Would it be too much if I had him use his Book of Vile Darkness for his encounter?
If the party’s level 20, why not? They don’t call it “throwing the book at them” for nothing!
The Book of Vile Darkness, just using the Basic Artifact rules, could do some serious damage to a party with simple choices. An extra resistance to something common amongst party damages (Fire and Radiant to prevent Nuke Builds), +1 to armor class to help melee defense, and maybe Athletics or Acrobatics proficiency for anyone trying to grapple him and prevent spell-casting are all good choices for the minor boon. Major boons are always GM’s choice, but two stand out hard from the options. 1d6 hit points recovered at the start of turn to help with the Chimes of Banishing (Banishment?) Hit Point Threshold, or Major Boon’s Condition Immunities. Vecna’s already Immune to Paralyze, but Blind/Deaf/Stun Immunity are worth considering for the major boon. Now, if we’re min-maxing the Minor Detriments, we can do cosmetic changes (Sour Stench noticable from 10 ft, Appearance change,) But those are all flavor stuffs. Mechanically, Disadvantage on Poison Saves (Note Damage and Condition Immunity to Poison), Holy Water within 10 ft being destroyed (Flavorful, and it would be mostly stopping a common item’s free Radiant Damage), And multiplying Food/Water needs by Six (Unusual Nature makes these matters immaterial) would be flavorful, as the tome Vecna arguably pioneered should act as an old friend to him, punishing any foolish enough to steal it from him. Finally, 2 Major Detrimental Properties. A lot of these are flavorful to the extreme, and are arguably there for a DM to add to the story of an artifact the PLAYERS are trying to get. Having the Book requires Blood, which Vecna draws with an Afterthought attack, is certainly an option. And the big Major Detriment, ‘An Avatar of a God that tries to take the Book from you’… That’s the player characters. They’re the servants of the Wizards 3, charged with stopping Vecna. If you’re players are down with ‘Your Destiny was Foretold/Written for you’, then their quest to stop Vecna was literally an act by the universe to stop the Book of Vile Darkness from being used by it’s most dangerous master. Plus, I’ve seen some GMs trying to add the Hand/Eye of Vecna to the statblock. But I’ve typed enough for one night.
All really great ideas, thanks for typing that out! You could really craft a whole campaign around Vecna and his favorite book!
@ That'll be fucking insane and I'm all here for it dude!! As for the Hand and Eye, I was actually going to let my players find and obtain the artifacts in the later half of the second act to attune to and use, but to flavor it as Vecna gaining control of their users over time to show the corrupting effects of the Arch Lich. But if we're talking about Vecna having his hand & eye again, the way I'm going to flavor it is him getting his body parts after landing a crit with Arfterthought on whoever is attuned to each item. But for the wish spell, I don't know what he would wish for that would NOT result in an unfair TPK.
heh i love the presentation!
Thanks! Always fun putting these together!
These law firm videos are a lot of fun
Thanks, they’re fun to make! Glad folks are enjoying them!
these are great videos. I always enjoy seeing them. using Vecna for a TPK would be a perfect time to bring out my skull crystal dice! those would send the right message. 😆💀
That would be awesome! Very thematic!
Vecna is great against Tier 3 or lower party. Against a level 20 he is out of business in Adventure League. Afterthought is an afterthought. It does an average damage of 25 per round and it is melee only. The DC 20 is passable at level 20. I change the hit points to max. Afterthought became a weapon of returning. Rotten Fate was changed to NERD GAMER FART and affect anyone in range. I just finish Vecna Eve of Ruin. I had an average group of five. Bronwyn Barbarian 20 human. Buildrick Artillerist 20 human. Baulder Cleric 1 Wizard 19 Human. Mighty Mag Barbarian 20 Human. Wobbles Warlock 20 tiefling. The boss fight with Vecna with no changes is cake walk for prepared party and a knock out drag out with a casual party. Mighty Mag and Baulder came prepared, the other three did not. I did manage to kill 3 of the party once, and two of the party twice. Revivify sucks. PC Killed 10 Monsters Killed 226 Villains Captured 2 Villains Escaped 17 was the count for the whole campaign. Vile teleport is great until the party stays together and moves to beat him down on their turn. Combat took over two hours.
Comments from session 18 and last session of the Vecna Eve of RUin. Baulder, “excuse me Rotten DM. PC conference at the front of the store, and you will need an additional sign in sheet.” Whisper. Look at DM. Smile. Whisper. Look at DM. Smile. “Here are our additional allies.” DM. I had a very strong group of five. True polymorph Baulder to Ancient Brass Dragon. True polymorph Simulacrum to Ancient Brass Dragon. True polymorph Mighty Mag to Ancient Brass dragon. Iron Golem. And Berserker Spirit from Horn of Valhalla. Rod of Seven Parts with four charges left. Expend Charge Simulacrum Buildrick.
Death Knights, “By unholy Vecna, we evoke Hellfire orb.” Three booms follow. Death Knight One. “Is this a person on death saves I see before me. DOUBLE TAP.” Mr. Happy arrives on is boogie board. “I am so happy.” Dragons claw, blows are exchanged. Death Knight two falls. Death Knight One, “If they hurt one of ours, we send one of theirs to morgue. DOUBLE TAP BUILDRICK.” The death knight falls and Buildrick Simulacrum cast revivify on both dead people. Lots and lots of potions of healing later, the iron golem presses the diamond and is teleported into the cave complex. The group follows and are attack by four mirror images of the party who target Buildrick and Wobbles. These monsters shatter and the group moves in. In the center of the room, Vecna is casting a ritual with a familiar green stick. The group spreads out and starts pressing buttons.
Thanks for your perspective, I haven’t gotten to use him yet so it’s good to hear from someone who has! I think most monsters struggle against full level 20 parties, but it sounds like Vecna can still hold his own somewhat - or a lot with a few tweaks!
My 2nd levels players shit themselves when they found out they were working for one and proceeded to get chased out of his lair by a Dracolich summoned by him.
That’s awesome! Sounds like a very fun campaign!
I remember people complaining about how underwhelming Vecna was in the book. It feels like they weren't running him efficiently. He's so mobile.
Granted, I haven’t gotten to use him in game yet, but I agree. You have to keep him moving around and out of your party’s reach to be most effective. Legendary actions to go with those reactions would’ve been nice though!
@@TheBardsCollegeYT Or lair actions for him. Unless I missed them in the book.
I don’t think he gets any lair actions, but I could be wrong! Definitely an oversight!
Somebody better pick up that phone because I fucking called it! Great video, as always!
Vecna’s secretary (Kas) juuust quit, so it might be a bit! Glad you enjoyed it!
@TheBardsCollegeYT I think it's a great series, and you should do more like this with other monsters like Death Knights, Beholders, Vampires, Liches, Dragons, and etc.
I actually have a series called 5-Minute Monster where I cover different monsters in a slightly more serious way (I’ve done both liches and death knights!). Less comedy-focused but you might enjoy them!
🥳🫂👍🏿 Have YOU been injured by medical malpractice? Contact: Vecna, Tiamat & Orcus Attorneys at Law
All three in one practice? Now THAT would really teach your party a lesson!
I think I need his service.
Don’t we all?
these videos are so fun definitely nice to have a shorter video in my inbox because I'm in the middle of moving and barely have any time to watch videos!
Glad I can fit in your schedule! Thanks for still finding time to watch, I hate moving so hopefully you’re almost finished!
I don't know if you know this, but this sidequest would slot beautifully into the midgard setting from kobold press. In the Northlands section, there is a kingdom of bearfolk ruled by an archfey called the "bear king" who, once a year, organizes a contest of fishing as the spring melts the river which bring a bounty of salmon, with human and bearfolk alike competing in the fishing contest. I was on the fence on how to manage the contest and this video was incredibly helpful
Woah, that’s awesome! I haven’t read up on that before, sounds very fun though. Glad my contest could help you flesh it out!
Interesting game.
Thanks! Hopefully fun, too!
This is perfect thank you I have two players who are constantly fishing every single time to get down time this is perfect for them 👍
That’s awesome, glad I could help! I hope they enjoy it!
My standard addition of letting fast hands or proficiency with dice set etc adjust the role. in this case move one die up or down 1 number. So a 4,6 can on a successful DC or what ever changes to 5,6.
That’s a cool way to use those abilities! Thanks for sharing!
I thought Dolphins should have 2 or 3 Int.
Agreed! Maybe 4, I could be convinced!
Love your vibe and general feel. I struggle most with running spellcasters against my party, so this is a wonderfully welcome toolbox of useful spells. Thank you!
Thank you very much, kind words like yours really mean a lot! Hope these spells help you make some fun moments!
First video of yours I stumbled on thanks to the Algorithm. Will be checking out Feys and Fishing since Fey shenanigans have been a concern/thorn for my players since they started.
Glad you enjoyed this one, hope you like that video as well! I’m a big fan of any fey-related shenanigans!
I think Balors are a okay at being the same. Replace it with the Aboleth's, beings who should have knowledge from each generation, only have 14.
Fair, aboleth’s being that low is crazy! Hopefully it’s updated in the new book!
I like it I would totally use it in a casino style scene with several other dice games you mentioned before
Glad you like it! One of these days I'll have to run a session where I throw all these games in there!
What if you upped it to a d8 or d10, but made it so they just have to roll within 1 of the target number? You could make an exception for the highest and lowest number on the die. That needs to be rolled exactly, but has a bigger payout if you manage it.
Not a bad idea! Quick and easy, while still stacking the odds in the casino’s favor. I like the suggestion!
hahahhaa that's fantastic! It's also a fun throwback to character creation! (no seriously.. how in the world did you roll SIX 18's in a row???)
You’d need similar luck I think! Glad you like it!
Instructions unclear, my party tried to rob the victim before the murderer and took so long that the murderer hapened during the robbery and they killed booth the murderer and the victim. They spent the session trying to frame someone instead. It was even more fun than the actual thing.
That sounds incredible! Goes to show, no plan survives contact with the players! Thanks for sharing, glad you had such a fun session!
Interesting idea! Shall give it a try with my players 👍
Thanks, hopefully they enjoy it!
I could see the die type changing for higher bets. For example, 2d4 for 1 gold, 2d6 for 5 gold, 2d8 for 10 gold, 2d10 for 50 gold, or 2d12 for 100 gold.
That would really put the odds against them! Imagine the cheering at the table though if they hit!
I am going to put that into my campaign. In Dungeon of Drakkenheim, there is an area called Buckledown Row, and this game is a good fit. Thanks!
Glad I could help! Would love to hear how it goes if your party end up playing!
This sounds like better odds than the "chance wheel" of using a d% or d100. Picking specific number pays 10 to 1. A number in 25 number sections pays 4 to 1, or odds or evens pays 2 to 1. I found the game in one of my RPG books but can't remember which one. I'm not even sure if I have the payouts correct. But they have worked at as casino style game in they past. I like your game of mimics. It sounds themed specifically to a D&D world. Unfortunately I can't try to test it any time soon. My game is on hold until my players are done with the play they are doing.
Interesting roulette wheel concept, it does sound similar! Thanks for sharing, and glad you like the game!
Great concept! Thanks for sharing great in game game ideas.
Here’s what I’d add. Maybe you get the reroll and if you miss by one number you break even. Still leaves more multiple numbers to lose it all.
Not a bad idea at all! Would definitely make that re-roll more tempting! Thanks for the suggestion!
My party's starting RIGHT in a casino inn tomorrow's session! This comes in more than handy 3:)
That’s awesome! Hopefully they like it, I have a few other videos about dice games you might find useful, too!
