Climate Change Discourse and its Dangerous Liabilities
The Gonzaga Institute for Climate, Water, and the Environment is pleased to host Dr. Eileen Crist on "Climate Change Discourse and its Dangerous Liabilities."
DESCRIPTION:
In this talk, Dr. Crist will differentiate between the reality of climate change and the discourse of climate change defined as the dominant way of framing it. The two are related but not coextensive. While the reality of climate change warrants immediate remedial response, the discourse of climate change is swerving humanity away from the right view and action with respect to climate change and the broader socio-ecological crisis we are steeped in. Crist contends that the discourse of climate change is actually digging the deadly hole we are in even deeper. Crist suggests ditching the dominant discourse of climate change without losing sight of the reality and dangers of climate change to human and nonhuman worlds alike.
SPEAKER:
Eileen Crist taught in the Department of Science, Technology, and Society at Virginia Tech for 22 years, retiring in 2020. Her work focuses on the biodiversity crisis and destruction of wild places, pathways to halt these trends, and ways forward toward creating an ecological civilization. She is co-editor of a number of books, including Keeping the Wild (2014) and Protecting the Wild (2015). She has authored and coauthored numerous academic papers as well as popular writings, and is Associate Editor of the online journal The Ecological Citizen and blogger for Earth Tongues. Her most recent book, Abundant Earth: Toward an Ecological Civilization, was published by University of Chicago Press in 2019. excellent presentation on the importance of the separate crisis to biodiversity.
The overpopulation of our planet will be our demise.
A twist on what Rees, Hagens, Meadows and other conclude but summed up. The thing is that it looks like the best case scenario population wise is that we'll peak at 10 billion and go back to 6 billion at century's end, the same population as we started the century, so we'll just have to tighten our belts and consume much less while we get the numbers down to around 2 or 3 billion people. Fossil fuels will almost all have been long gone by then and renewables as far as we can see won't be 100% substitute. In the meantime we will apparently change the beautiful planet as we've known and live with the consequences. I think people in general don't consider what will happen in 20, 50 or 100 years much of their concern since many of us will have been long gone. We're too caught up with the immediate. Purple energy which Simon Michaux proposes could be an alternative, but still, we have to scale down!
Talking about talking about ......Talking about.
5:10 @Brian Henning (he/him), please provide references with validated data that support the scenario status that you claim 5:00-5:45.
Save Our Planet Now
Oh ffs… he/ him nonsense..please.
🤡
Thank you so much, for the candid unvarnished truth. Peace.
We're in a predicament. There is no solution.
Aware of this all an.d more for decades; what about a solution based on logic and symplicity. Let's be clear about the fact that nothing is cooling our earth. Solar cells generate electricity in mostly moderate climates and do not reflect much sunlight. Windmills cause friction and so cause a warming up of air; on top of this wind will take longer to balance out high- and low pressures, gathering more moisture in the process and so more rain in fewer instances. This might be unprovable right now. Waiting to long might be desasterous. Another blunt fact; There are (sub)tropical places that could easily be cooled down like 5 degrees with only benefits. Solution; use modern pylons used for high voltage electricity transport to cover vast areas with a knitted net of rustfree iron (cm2 and 0.1 mm thickness). These pylons are like 80 mtr. high and carry the cables for like 800 mtrs. Square areas could support gutters of flexible solar cells that would provide pure (stored) water at pressure and abundant electricity. For dryer areas they would provoke fires caused by lightnings and replace dams. This concept is utterly meant to decentralise and counter urbanisation. Not aware of similar concepts we should work out this concept. It might be as well profitable and revolutionise real climate change in the sense of cooling that other parts of the world could slightly profit from?
Civilization is a heat engine😊😊
This will silently live on, tucked away on inanimate servers around the world, long after our electricity has faded away; a testament to our sad disconnect and "civil discussion" regarding our guaranteed self manifested demise.
Maybe we are subconsciously terraforming the planet for a coming population of humanoid robots, as they will have no need for the things we are destroying...!
I think it about time to find new ways of asking better questions,,,,,, ,How fast can a steam train travel before the breaks are no longer effective? shall we find out,,,,,,,,,, ,all aboard !
African women live in dire poverty. With no electricity nor natural gas, their lives are spent toiling daily to continue only with basic subsistence. With fossil fuels and middle class life, African woman can cook with modern stoves food they did not have to hunt or forage. Cleaning will be done by modern machines. Fossil fuels will give African women time for education and make them a part of the world economy.
What are African men doing while all this is happening? Using dried dung as fuel is also what people do, giving them fossil fuels in replacement isn't necessarily a good thing, or tractors/cars etc, it hasn't helped the modern world lower emissions so why African women?
@@antonyjh1234 So white women get fossil fuels and a middle class life but not African women? Do you have an issue with African women?
@@antonyjh1234 Kdub is what we would call a “troll” Someone in who is completely disingenuous, saying things only to get a reaction from his adversaries. Please disregard.
I am confused is this Brian Henning or Eileen Crist ? ?
An eloquent, disturbing, and much-needed revelation of an existential threat that has been underreported thanks to the singular focus on climate change. Nothing could have driven the point home with more impact than the statement that, even without climate change, we are facing massively disruptive effects on our global civilization.
Late 1990s? I knew we were doomed by 1996 due to my experience in environmental activism and research. Algae yes. Algae can sequester 100 gigatons of CO2 per year. oil and coal are from algae. Algae is 100 times better than any other biofuel. Algae can capture co2 emissions from coal. Sir David King already promoted algae on Nate's channel. Raffael Jovine, the double Ph.D. in Marine Biology who set up "Brilliant Planet." Near ocean algae farms can sequester 10 gigatons of co2 per year - IF they are supported and promoted. Deep ocean algae as per Sir David King can sequester 40 gigatons per year of CO2. Then we can also do algae as biofuels and co2 capture from coal plants, etc. If we don't promote algae to sequester co2 emissions then the future of life on Earth will be algae. Algae had been alive on Earth for 4.6 billion years. There are algae extremophiles that will survive whatever we throw at Earth.
Crist is correct that overshoot rather than climate change is the fundamental, underlying problem. However, I believe she goes wrong in numerous ways. A sampling: 1. No mention of capitalism. The current system both reflects and intensifies humankind's natural expansionism. No environmental discussion is valid without addressing it directly. 2. Inadequate discussion of human nature. "Human power" was mentioned briefly near the end, but this is a core topic, not an afterthought. 3. No workable solutions. We got the standard list of desired outcomes, but what is going to address our destructive nature and capitalism's entrenched power? 4. Inadequate coverage of AI. The term was used once, but this new mode of cognition could overcome some of humankind's environmental shortcomings. 5. The usual hatchet job on Francis Bacon. Yes, he sought to use nature for human benefit, but he also said this ("The Great Instauration"): "... I would address one general admonition to all: that they consider what are the true ends of knowledge, and that they seek it not either for pleasure of the mind, or for contention, or for superiority to others, or for profit, or fame, or power, or any of these inferior things; but for the benefit and use of life; and that they perfect and govern it in charity."
I have noticed that marriage at older ages positively correlates with climate change. Raising the age of families has had disastrous consequences. I blame public schools and immigration.
51:00 Plan B, please understand that climate choices won't begin to happen until is it GOP, when money firmly grasps the concept. At first they will intentionally cause climate to accellerate, which is happening now. But, fear will set in and they will reverse as space more and more becomes a bad choice. Then climate will become a genocide project. Only a few cities will be allowed, greatly depopulated. Genocide is a public opinion controlled by media, like before. Scientists can deduce this too, but they do not want to be connected to an extreme negative possibility, because its not fashionable.
47:00 tech is money, not humanity. Tech is slave class breeding. Like football. We confuse and conflate the two concepts. Manifestations of money are bigger is better. They have to leave monuments, marks on the earth. Cities are a backwards reasoning when placed over concepts of biological life systems. Meanwhile, humanity makes no progress forward. Tech causes us to de-evolve as much as we continue to adapt to a maladaptive concept.
45:00 tech kills critical thinking .. warriors start the city, emasculates inherit it, then it gets conquered
I'm very sorry to disagree. Humanity has no highest potential. We are an exploding fractal of destruction calling itself brilliant Godly beauty. Original sin as a concept was likely stolen from a culture defeated and forgotten. Parts of our ancient philos are correct if taken away from the whole. This is because the parts of all religions have been taken from local conquered cultures and from those far away. Our design caused an overbreeding of slave class people who rioted and destroyed their ruling class over and over. We're idiots. Doomed.
"It returns all displaced materials to their inertial place of origin or it gets the oceans and dies again." -"Silence of the Physics" Earth is facing very very near term ~100 meters of sudden ocean rise. Climate models virtually ignore increasing pressure and 200 thousand years of anthropogenic thermal-mass (including heat & CO2) in the oceans. The models largely ignore Earth's spin and Gravity as well as mass movement to the tune of ~100Billion tons of material per year from deep underground to the surface. The ocean water rising will be radioactive as the ~1000 nuclear reactors around the world go supercritical (they can not cool as atmospheric and ocean temps increase) do to increasing thermal mass and pressure. It takes some 80 years to "shut down". There simply is no choice. The real "pandemic" is civilization. It is being removed as such b/c of the layers of relational physics which bring about the envelope of physics/harmonics for Life to exist. Humans have destroyed this envelope's ability to resonate within tolerances for that particular harmonic envelope to exist. Thus a change of state is occurring wherein a new stable thermodynamic resonance will exist that will not support complex life from what has been for 100's of millions of years. Many models (much as the IPCC) virtually if not completely ignore correlating changes in atmospheric pressure; ocean stratification and motion changes; exchange rates of various thermal mass gasses between ocean & atmosphere... etc. It also is miss-applying the "Boltzmann" principal of "radiative energy" -as relating to and with the above et-all. "Heat" cannot "radiate" to space from Earth in the way being described in many models. This would violate laws of thermodynamics which includes "Black Body radiation". ~90% of ALL anthropogenic thermal-mass since slash & burn and pointy sticks is in the oceans. The actual meaning of the same Truth is that only Heaven exists and humans are the only thing lost to it and from it. Servitude to Nature alone is the only road to redemption. Inside or outside. Death / life are just misnomers, change of state. The Purpose remains constant. One Soul many faces. No one form is superior to another. Civilization it's self is the cause of all life's destruction. Accepting this as some kind of necessary phase or step TO something is delusion. Now is always constant. All and every essence is always dying & being born. Action is now. Preservation of complexity for the sake of All beings NOT civilization at all And not humans first 1billion humans to dismantle all infrastructure and returning ALL mined/drilled materials to their inertial place of origin by order of density and toxicity. 1billion humans to create "Earth-Ship" type self generating environments from as much earthen material as possible. As many species as possible must be able to migrate to & from these .... All the rest to support the the first two. One Soul Many beings /faces/species Crystal's Law
Thank you very much. Very³ important view on the topic. I think climate change will soon take on a leading role when it comes to species extinction. There are climatic limits for entire ecosystems. Weak - as our ecosystem has become through our activities - we have to assume an insane pace. Hearing this should sound like pur horror. <- That is the reason **why** we don't speak about: Climate Change AND Species Extinction We would instantly know how effed we are.
To many people on this planet
Disagree. This is a classic malthusian talking point. It is not the number of people on the planet, but how we are using resources. Our growth based economic system is the issue. There ARE too many millionares and billionaires and people eating meat. There are too many people participating in capitalism uncritically.
@@davidsvideosofneatstuff1205 Your car has to generate 740 watts of power per horse power
There is too many manmade structures that stop fluid circulations. Meaning we have fewer areas to level the energies. The number of structures keeping energies out increase very much each year. Most of asphalt, concrete... cover the ground - then the soil under will not get heat or moisture. So we have less and less available space or area to spread or level the energies on this earth. That is the main reason of higher global temperature. So now you know! Tip: Hart Hagan on YT and biotic pump. Disclaimer: I'm not a sciencer (the real word 1547-, not the fake word scientist, that word is probably relatated to the earlier "bastard" word sciencist 1778-, perhaps first said by a youngster not speaking properly, see Oxford English Dictionary).
@@heidenburg5445 "Aptera's unique diamond shaped solar panels maximize the energy you get from the sun. This gives fully equipped vehicles ~700 Watts of continuous charging power - whether you're driving or parked. Aptera Specs: Efficient Three-Wheel Design Propelled by a trio of electric wheel motors, each producing a stout 50kW (68hp). Each vehicle can generate enough solar energy for up to about 40 miles of free daily driving and up to 1,000 miles of range when fully charged." Yeah only if you get a lot of sunlight. hahahahaha. No sunlight and you're back to square one. Then we have the Aerosol Masking Effect from the sulfur pollution - meaning abrupt global warming is already twice as bad as previously thought!! So even with solar panels we will still double the heating of the atmosphere.
the only way out of this unsustanable path is to TAX all forms of pollution- this is what taxation is for! to move the economy to a more sustainable path for the next generation.
Yes carbon tax would be good, but our economy is still fundamentally growth based. This is incompatible with the continuance of human civilization on this planet.
Tax doesn't pay for anything, it is only a siphon to the money coming in which it is always doing. We could put a carbon value on products but tax more just means removing money from the system as money doesn't build up from borrowings. Money ceases to exist when debts are paid back, it does not build up, we are a debt based economy. We could allow less money into the system, this would achieve the same thing but govt spending wouldn't increase more because we tax more.
Excellent presentation. But as a selfish species, we're unlikely to make the relevant sacrifices called for. We are totally blind to our connection to nature.
How can you and I be less blind? I think this is where ecoliteracy comes in...
Must be a 'learned behavior' - we wouldn't be here, if we were that dumb in the beginning. 'Re-learning' is different from 'learning' <- is a good hint.
No fossil fuels. No energy to transition to less harmful tech=rapid reduction of human population.
I’ve come to the place that the apex of the causal umbrella is the discovery and use of fossil fuels. It makes our over exploitation possible. I believe our only hope is a drastic immediate outlawing of the use of any fossil fuels world wide and I’m afraid I don’t believe that is possible.
Thank you, Dr. Crist for your insightful presentation. I’ve been a school psychologist for almost thirty years and have noticed the change in awareness in students. Mine were a few years younger. Anyway, thank you again.
Great presentation, couldn't agree more, however, the drastic reduction in cooling aerosols, such as sulphates in shipping fuel, can have an increased heating affect as confirmed by James Hansen
Doesn't mean we should make shipping less clean. OR that we NEED to slow down economy

We are watching a historic fire burn in the Sierra Nevada. The Park Fire has grown a hundred thousand acres a day. Hundreds of other fires are burning across North America. The week before I’d driven across Los Angeles and San Diego, where dozens of cities have metastasized together into a megapolis. For most people l, the megapolis is a permanent thing. They can’t comprehend that it has not always been there
Thank you for honoring our plant and animal friends.
Thank you for spinning such a beautiful web connecting the underlying complexities in a distinctly coherent tapestry of understanding. It's time for wisdom to reign in the intellect.
This was a profound presentation.
Beautiful universal loving message Thank you !
Less hard or no marx. Adam Smith misses bhai simon😊😊
The guy with the white hair is full of fear ridden cognitive dissonance weak sauce and almost resorts to ad hominem attacks. Pitiful
Sharing will save the world.
this was a great talk about a very important issue. thank you very mutch.
Excellent talk.
Yes... if we make it... that is not certain, indeed. Basically: economists and politicians have to demonstrate to us how an increasing quantity of money could be decoupled from GDP. Than they have to show us how GDP could be decoupled from biophysical boundaries by earth's ecosystem and carrying capacity. In absence of such evidence, and this is where we are, they are all complicit in systemic genocide and ecocide by perpetuating a growth-driven monetary system and a growth driven capitalist economy.
The efforts are to" new" to establish a comment.😀👌

Study Galileo & you will why constituents must question authority. No one questions the input of CO2 but we are only at 0.04%. CO2 is an invisible, odorless gas. It is not a pollutant. NO2/SO2 are pollutants-both natural & anthropogenic. Of these 2, only NO2 is the greenhouse gas while SO2 has a mysterious reflective property. Most of the climate change we have had is due to natural effects, notably the lunar gravity pull on the Hadley Cells to northward trending positions, a disturbance in the jetstream (due to rotational forces), disturbances in the thermohaline circulation. Thermohaline circulation, not well understood, but in recent weeks we have seen a slowing of the core's rotation & disturbance in which the volume of the geoid has been redistributed. BTW water vapor is your most potent greenhouse gas. With regard to govt, people run for office to rig markets & that is why govt does not work for us. I do think our grid should be amplified with ALL forms of energy. You cannot sustain the entire grid on just solar & wind. We do not have enough REEs for this stuff & lawmakers are underestimating the sheer amount of energy needs. Blackouts will occur. There is also, as referenced in your pod series, a competition for space. Solar & wind require enormous acreage. This will compete for space with the need for housing, the need to preserve our national forests & just plain old woods, farms, livestock grazing land, the need for arts & cultural spaces, parks. You cannot carpet the whole country & think the apple cart will not get upset. You also underestimate the expense of an all electric society. Electricity is very expensive. Perhaps, you professors might be willing to donate a third of your salary for redistribution. BTW banning gas stoves is not going to stop heat waves or blizzards.
Absolute rigmarole of bullshit.
We have nuclear, thermal solar and geothermal energy, and high altitude wind. Efficiency and insulation and synthetic fuels. Windmills and photovoltaic are just the oil lobby's distracting refrain.
