131 !!! Absolute B.S. No one has the money, or the time to build that many kit cars, not without a team of mechanics, a fully equipped workshop and independent means. Not to mention all the terrible quality of reproduction parts on the market, and it takes plenty of time to recondition/refurbish all the components of the donor car.

Have you tried DIY hydro forming ? This method allows for a very neat solution that is repeatable and quick once you have made the former. It lends itself to different shapes and sizes with a great surface finish without any hammering ! Here is an example of this method.......... ua-cam.com/video/p_hb-KfuB6M/v-deo.html
I built a Rickman Ranger in the 80s. The donor car was my MK2 Escort which I had already converted to to 2L Pinto engine. It was my daily driver for about three years until I sold it. It's first use was a return trip to Aberdeen from Essex over a weekend for a wedding. We also took it abroad for family holidays. Never a problem. I prepared carefully and built it alone under a self built carport in my back garden, taking a three week holiday to do it.
I bought a brilliant kit car. It was a Quantum Xtreem. Lotus 7 size but built on a stainless steel monocoque with inboard front suspension. It had a Ford Duratec 2 litre engine with Omex engine management, with type 9 gearbox, a limited slip diff and disc brakes all round. It had been the factory demonstrator and was very quick and handled very well. I had to modify it a bit as it had been made for someone much taller than my 5 foot 8 inches. I moved the pedal box back and fitted a smaller diameter brake master cylinder to reduce the pressure needed on the pedal. Sadly I had some skin cancer from sailing in the sunny Med, and sold it as an open car was no longer a good idea for me.
Great hero story 🎉
It’s not about horsepower it’s about balance. Balance makes a car a pleasure to drive. Nothing is sadder than an ersatz cobra where the best part on it is the RAF sheepskin jacket on the owner’s back.

I’ve been a huge fan of the DAX Rush and when I went to Uni as a mature student (42) I chose the CCRR system the subject of my thesis! Interesting I was fitting the system to an FSAE car and couldn’t do it mechanically, so I ended up using hydraulics. I had no idea that McLaren used a similar system! I did build a scale model so I’ll have to dig it out one day!

Interesting Spot, comments about building a Robin Hood and assembling a Westfield, well I bought a secondhand not started Robin Hood S3 not knowing the issues with RH builds and with no experience with building a kit car. I had demolished my garage to have an extension so no garage. Put it in a neighbours garage for a year until she sold the plot from under me and I had to finish the car on my driveway over the next 3 years. With a bit of help from Gingerfix I completed it and passed SVA first time.
What a great story
What happened to Graham Holdway of Gingerfix. He worked for Robin Hood for a while and helped develop the V8 series 3 kit prior to the 2B being introduced. The 2B was simply an abbreviation of sorts, of the chassis made from tube steel and they phrased it as a tuby chassis until they came up with 2B ! As a builder I preferred the early folded stainless monocoque chassis with a few mods ! .

Having watched this I have a few questions. 1/ Is this group just for lotus 7 type kits? I thought it was but the subject matter of this video would suggest otherwise. 2/ Trevor was referring to a book which I believe told how many of each kit car kits were made and sold between certain dates and if they were still in production. I an currently 2 years into the second total rebuild of my car which is a replica of a 1950's MG sports car. I also believe that this kit is still in production, albeit in very small numbers. If so it would make it one of the longest running kits still available.
The book is A to Z of Kit Cars by Steve Hole. I don’t think it’s available other than on resale sites. Yes, 7Spot is about 7s and everything light and fast.
This would probably really interest me but unfortunately I couldn't hear what was being said, because of the music.
Where would you class the Rickman Ranger? which is basically a rebodied Ford Escort mk1/2. It has a chassis and body bolted together & with the doors and glass pre fitted! as was the headlining!
Hi Simon, I love the Rickman Ranger and we are planning a follow up discussion on MiniKits! … Stay tuned!
We have one in Northwest Kit Car Owners Group which we use as our Support car !!!
Started watching but the music got in the way of the dialogue. Might try again later with the sound off and subtitles. Another probably interesting vid spoilt by intrusive music 🤨🤨

What is the book/document which Trevor keeps referring to?
The Book is "the A to Z of Kit Cars" by Steve Hole.
@@7Spot556 Thank you.
@ Hope it helps.
Back in the 80s a well-built JBA Falcon was declared a better car than the Morgan and at around 1/3 of the price of the Morgan. Autocar which as many will know is not a kit car magazine and after testing a Falcon against the Morgan declared the Falcon the better car. Morgan were far from happy as you can guess. I have that magazine and display it at classic etc car shows. I have a Falcon built by the famous kit car builder John Watson and its a beautifully built car.
Well said!
@@7Spot556 Morgan still don't and never have accepted that they are a bunch of blokes building cars in a shed at the foot of the Malvern hills, and are in fact building kit cars !
@@catherinewright8933 I agree, if you buy a factory built Westfield for instance its still classed as a kit car. I don't really see a difference to how Morgans are made with many parts taken from other car manufacturers not least of which are their engines and gearboxes. BTW the only area the Morgan scored over the Falcon was engine performance. The Morgan having a more powerful bigger engine than the 2ltr Ford Pinto. Now had the JBA factory fitted the same engine as the Morgan the Falcon would have out classed it. Plenty of Falcons have 2.8 injection Capri engines 2.9 Granada engines, Rover V8 engines and many more all of which would have made the Falcon out perform the Morgan.
Good discussion... My limited experience of caterham , westie and a top-end British GTR definitely had Westfield as the most polished. The caterham was nice but when a customer pays premium for the brand and, for example receives a triumph herald steering rack that they need to strip and shim up before even contemplating bolting it on( despite being brand new ) was somewhat of a safety contradiction to me . Many new builders lack deeper mechanical ability and presenting potential errors on steering - braking components wasn't something I'd expected from the premium 7 brand .... perhaps their later change to a rolling chassis kit was as a result . The biggest can of worms though was the most expensive GTR brand . Now completely revamped but 17 years ago was absolutely appalling for most average "assemblers" . There was a definite distinction between builders who are expected to have fabrication facilities and knowledge and assemblers with only basic tools . The modern kit car probably needs to cater for the latter in our instant fix world. Great chat .
Thanks for your sage and experienced comments. Couldn’t agree more. It is a shame about GTR too. They were an absolute rough cut to assemble (back in the day) and quite a journey for their evolution. Sad that Westfield has dropped them.
The reaction from Morgan owners was a picture when I took the Chevy powered Hawke around Malvern ! I did go to the factory before I built it for a job interview, they told me I didn't have the right "skill set" so I didn't get the job ! The Hawke was about the 10th car I had built !
Did you tell them that? And did you ask for their definition of "skill set"?
@@jaanvonreis2745 I think they thought I was over qualified. The Morgan guys don't build an entire car, they just assemble one or two elements then hand it over to the next person. In hindsight I'd be bored doing the same task over and over again ! Maybe their prototyping / R&D would suit me better ?
LCD was the company with the Hawke in the end. I built the green one with the Chevy engine shown here.
LOVE THIS CHAT
Thanks Rob. It’s an interesting topic and we plan to explore it deeply.

Thank you for the discussion of the various championships and classes. At leat you folks had several classes for the less expensive smaller cars. The closest we got, I believe, was the "run whatcha brung" classes at Nelson Ledges, divided solely by displacement in the 1980's and 90's. Today's vintage classes on this side of the pond are increasingly expensive to run, ie. Pittsbugh Grand Prix which is perhaps a representative example. The engine building has become downright expensive with technology not available back in the day. You folks also have vintage trialling which is a relatively inexpensive entry to competitive motorsport. I have tried for years to get people interested in doing a trials course or vintage hillclimb here. Our shop has a 1924 BSA Model 10 and a 1935 BSA Scout as well as a number of Ford Model A's. A comment I often hear is "BSA never made cars". My usual response is to go read a book. I have approached the local Model T and Model A clubs, but alas, those gentlemen do not wish to get their autos muddy and prefer to sit in lawn chairs at car shows. As the owner of a third generation machine shop and what's left of our race team, I find this frustrating. When my grandfather was racing in the 1920's and 30's, most class rules were designed for competitors with very little money. Again, thank you for the discussion. --Dr. Lynn
