Crotal Cordless Electric Air Pump Review (Is it for you?)
Is this a practical pump if you're really into cycling?
Have you seen ads for these little electric pumps on your social media? I spotted this on Facebook and contacted Crotal to see if I could review one. They sent me a unit and I checked it out.

Rock Bros Bell Thingy Update Review short

I reviewed this bell thingy a couple of years back in a quick style review. I didn't really recommend it, or give it a thumbs down, I just showed you what it can do. I used it sparingly over the last 18 months or so, but used it a lot on the weekend when my regular bell malfunctioned. Here, in less than 90 seconds, I tell you what I think of this thing. Here's the original video if you want to ...
Oops! I Made A Mistake - Rock Bros Bar Tape Review

My bike was looking a little shabby, so to spruce it up I bought some new bar tape. There are thousands of different types out there, but I liked the look of the Rock Bros tape, so I gave it a try. I had a few issues with the tape... one was self inflicted. I explain that here, along with how it went putting it on my bike and whether I like the product. #RockBros #bartape #cycling
I Think E-Bikes Are A Problem
Переглядів 6 тис.4 місяці тому
This is a video 2 years in the making, with one theme... e-bikes. They are everywhere folks and I don't think it's good for the cycling industry, which is suffering right now. These things are big, they are fast, they are taking up more space on trails and pathways and roads... and they're increasingly being ridden by people who don't know what they are doing. They also don't encourage cycling....

Yep--those types of e-bikes, equipped with a throttle and not strictly pedal-assist, are really nothing more the electric motorcycles. They remind me of the mopeds of the 1970's gas crisis. They had pedals to skirt under the law as "bicycles," but of course they were way too heavy for any realistic pedalling--and no one did pedal those, except perhaps during startup. I too, see most of those type e-bikes ridden by younger folks that should have no need for them; and exhibit they have absolutely no idea what they are doing. I've been nearly run down by one on the sidewalk in front of my house while simply checking my mailbox. I barely evaded a head-on crash with one coming full blast around a blind curve on a Wildlife Refuge trail that did not allow motorized vehicles. And don't get me started on all the idiots on those electric motorcycle rentals riding the "no motorized vehicle" trails at the beach. Most of the older or physically challenged riders I see (who almost to a person were formerly cyclists) ride pedal-assist e-bikes only.

I saw your video when you first purchased your Haluzak recumbent. Too bad that company went out of business, they are great bikes. By now you have realised some of the advantages of 2 wheeled recumbents (I am not a fan of Trikes) and dismissed some of the myths ie "they are slow on hills (wheelbase length and gearing are key factors) mostly coming from the Diamond frame bike world!. Your video is one of the best I have seen as you demonstrated for folks the aspects of sharp turns and hill climbing. Downhills on an Under-seat Steering recumbent is unmatched, a luge ride! Comfort is king. For years I have toured coast to coast in Canada and the USA. Got into recumbents back in the mid nineties and would not think of a "normal bike" again. The freedom of NOT wearing bike shorts is enough to keep me content with the few disadvantages a recumbent has. The only ones I can think of is having to push a USS up a hill, not having a 😁😁handlebar in handy position. I have both OSS and USS steering recumbents,, two of which I self built and prefer the USS. Nothing between you and the road but your feet and makes for easy escape with the lack of handlebars to deal with. The other might be considered a disadvantage if you are not into conversing with people, as people are attracted to you when you ride it. I don't do mountain biking. I prefer touring. As you stated in a couple of your videos, Ebikes are on the rise and they focus ads on speed and power and have strayed from looking like a bike to motorbikes. Yes I would like to see them regulated because the industry promotes them as bicycles thus it has gotten out of hand. If you can pedal a 100 lb Ebike without turning on the motor for 20 or 30 k then maybe you might just call it a bicycle, would be a bench mark qualifier! I whole heartedly agree with your dismay on that subject. Thank you for the video's of your channel, most helpful. Would like to bike tour Calgary someday. Happy trails Mike

On the road, 35kph is not that fast. On the descents around here I frequently hit 45kph on my road bike without pedalling at all. I have both, an e-bike, which I ride for pleasure, and a road bike which I ride for pain. I enjoy both, depending on the mood I am in but, thinking about attitude from cyclists, I believe the opposite of your experience holds true in my area (rural Ireland, loads of hills, and lots of active cyclists). The e-bikers around here seem to be the more elderly folks, who are getting a new lease of life from riding e-bikes, and who have been driving for forty or fifty years, and are generally well mannered and courteous. The Lycra brigade, which is very active, also tend to be fairly civilised. However, on the rare occasions where less than salubrious attitude is displayed, it tends to be from someone on a high tech road bike who seems to feel that they have more right to the road, as they are suffering on it more than other road users, and that red stop lights don’t apply to them. In the end it all comes down to basic good manners. No one likes a road-hog, and everyone despises a show off. I still enjoy my analogue bike, but at age 66, I am glad that e-bikes have become mainstream. I intend to be riding long after the hills around here would have otherwise inevitably defeated me.

Agree. In Europe the law says that electric assistance is only provided when pedaling and assistance stops at 18mph or 25kph. (Thereabouts, from memory) This speed limitation for is an important safety factor. There are however lots of cheap bikes of the type you describe which don’t conform to this, putting their riders at a legal risk of in the event of accidents. Plus there are also electrical and fire safety issues with some of the cheaper ones. If the regulations aren’t better enforced at this stage, it may lead to registrations being required for all ebikes along with mandatory 3rd party insurance requirements.

    • @davycampbell4625
      @davycampbell4625 Місяць тому

It’s the assistance only when pedaling and the speed limit for assistance that make the boundary between an ebike and an electric motorcycle.

I believe we need a hybrid bicycle that uses both a manual option and motorized option and has regenerative braking built into it. Along with gears. Some hills are too steep to ride a conventional bicycle. But also, if the electrical circuitry developes a problem, I am not stuck with no way to peddle home. For the serious enthusiast with pedal power only it is best to buy one used and well maintained. Too many bicycles end up as scrap and hard to recycle. E Bikes need to be lighter. And as one commenter suggested, educating younger children the rules of the road and new comers proper bicycle/E Bike safety. Incidentally! Does anyone remember watching the news about a freak cycling accident involving a male crow that viciously attacked a cyclist not wearing a helmet lost his balance fighting off that bird and struck his head on the pavement and died? That man was Larry Holtzman a cousin of mine who was in Chicago , IL on a Bike Path with his family. A very tradgic accident. I have seen these crows with read and yellow feathers on wings over a black coat of feathers lunge at me on my bicycle and grab my scalp with their sharp tallons! Protecting their territory or a near by nest. One encounter was while driving my car onto a ramp to decend onto highway 80 and it flew at me and it was hot as i rolled my windows up as it struck my driver’s side window ! Phew! That was so close. And these birds are protected by law in ILLINOIS?!

I ride an e-bike. I’m older and wouldn’t be out there without it. Mine is heavier than your s no doubt. But it’s not the behemoth you describe. I have a trek computer and a mountain bike. I mostly ride on the same trails as regular bikes. But I’m respectful as with anything and pay attention. Never had an issue. I have had many regular bikes pass me. I do encounter regular bike folk that think I shouldn’t be out of their trails. I suspect there are jerks both on e-bikes and regular bikes. But I should be able to use the bike paths just as everyone else does. Paid the same taxes to build em. Should there be laws or rules, my guess nobody would pay any attention except to impose their will on others. I don’t know how you fix people who don’t pay attention or just don’t really care or respect other people. But that’s the issue not the bike. Pay attention, be respectful of others, be reasonable in your actions and enjoy the ride. I’m sorry you got hurt. Wish you a speedy recovery.

i've had the 50mm hooked tubeless superteams since 2021. Love them still as much as the day i got them. Many compliments and haven't done any maintanence on them. Bearing still smooth free hub still catches nothing loose. Have a bit of pad material buildup on the rear brake track that i gotta clean off somehow but thats not the rims fault. For the money you don't feel bad if you scuff them either. May swap out the bearings once they get grunchy but i will def service the free hub body this week.

I have had the opposite experience. I rode regular bicycles most of my life. Now, these were not the upper end bikes. Mine was a Schwin 3 speed which my wife bought me as a wedding gife 53 years ago. Then I met a friend at church who had just purchased an ebike. My brother, then 70, had done the same. Both told me how much fun they were having getting out and riding around town. So, I purchased an ebike and began to ride on our town's bike / hike trail. Within the first 6 months I was forced off the trail by high speed riders on sport racing bikes who had no courtesy and even yelled at me that I had not right to be on that trial. I'm 77 and I read the trail use regulations. Ebikes are allowed, but courtesy is recommended when passing a hiker or another rider.

Besides technicalities, an important aspect, at least for me: Crotal on their website do not say who they are and where they are located. For me this is a major NO NO for buying from anyone on the web. Considering their stated delivery periods of upto 15 days, they are most likely situated in China. Well I can understand that they are shy of stating this since way too much fraud and bad quality stuff is being dumped on us from there and they might fear that this repells many Europeans/North Americans. But they should face it and raise up to this problem by proper behaviour.

I've been cycling my entire life, now 61. I think e-bikes, and especially e-cargo bikes are a game changer in the transportation sector. The growth of e-bikes may encourage more biking infrastructure, a good thing. The question about e-bikes being a problem is nuanced. Here's where I've landed. THROTTLE = PROBLEM. Generally, the 130 lb woman or 160 lb man on a TERN GSD, a Surly Big Easy or a front-loading cargo bike carrying two children are not the problem. The e-bike commuters are not the problem. The elderly couple in pedal-assist 4-5 soft-pedaling down the path at 12 mph are not the problem. 95%+ of the people PEDALING their e-bikes are not the problem. The true "donkeys" passing pedestrians, cutting the apex of blind corners, and passing children at 23 mph with inches to spare are not pedaling their e-bikes. They're using the e-bike with a throttle as a low-speed motorcycle. I have a 2019 Radwagon, a 73 lb e-cargo bike with a throttle. I never use the throttle, and honestly, the average speeds on my road bike are faster than the e-cargo bike over the same loop. Why? I pedal both bikes. I personally believe the best answer is to eliminate the throttle. Electric BICYCLE means you MUST pedal, IMO. The solution is to eliminate the Class II e-bike, meaning the bike has a throttle and assists to 20 mph. The people buying e-bikes with a throttle have no desire to ride an electric assisted bicycle, meaning your legs spin.
