I am an indie game developer programming a space videogame called "Space Mission Overdrive".
I use Unity 3D, DOTS and ECS to make the game. You will be able to build your own spaceships and equip them with defences and lasers. The spaceships will be fully destructable (voxel like). The game will feature many units and lots of explosions and destruction. The atmosphere will be a mix between Neon and Lovecraftion Sience Fiction.

Working on the gravity system in my ECS space videogame. I found a better method to make the planets in Blender. I now use my own procedural textures generated with blender. The meshes for my planets now look a lot better! No more texture seams! With those problems out of the way i will continue converting my codebase to ECS. Unity DOTS is pretty awesome! At the moment i am experimenting with ECS Physics, Joints and custom gravity. My plan is to rewrite my space game Space Mission Overdrive to DOTS. It will take some time to rewrite everything, but it will be woth it! Working on my Unity DOTS knowledge by making a few physics experiments. I created several strings of cubes joined together by a Limited Distance Physics Joint. Next i will try other types of joints. 10.000 meshes with VFX trails. Unity ECS performance experiment. Also Havok Physics with Box collisions are enabled. I do not see much performance difference between Unity Physics or Havok Physics. Without the Physics the framerate easily doubles.

Thanks for the video. I'd love to hear about your visual setup. Which renderpipeline, how did you make your planets, the particle trail behind the UFO's, etc. I'm also very much a code guy and not a designer or graphics artist and I really like the visuals you have created.

Did you roll your own particle system with ECS or just sync game objects with Unity particle systems to relevant entities?
I use 2 VFX graph instances in this clip (for the 2 types of trails). The positions of all the entities are communicated to the VFX graph with a 2d texture. The relevant VFX graph then creates all the trails on the right positions:) This happens every few frames.

If DOTS can live up to a fraction of its potential for the holy grail of multi-core gaming. I will drop UE4 in a heart beat. Its an easy engine and has a great ecosystem of tools but its performance is lack luster for the kind of simulations I want to be able to run. I need 10K+ entities, not 2K just to render and lose fps with no logic scripted yet lol. Even tho the physics engine is PhysX the slowness of the engine code destroys the performance of a GPU based physics engine. Just my 2 cents.
Sure, interesting times for developers! We will see what the future brings, but DOTS certainly has my interest. I am still testing the new Unity Physics which can easily be replaced with Havok Physics to suit your needs. UE is also doing amazing things, but i can learn only so many new systems and i can get things done with Unity.

What is the idea behind the strobe flashes, seen on here and other videos? Is it because you are running a multiple faster than realtime?
For the moment the flashes are just many explosions at the same time. I have toned down the intensity a bit, so it may be more clear what is going on in the game :)

Ha ha, yes, the depths of despair are deep as a developer! Although i have despair with many systems, not only Unity :)
I Hate this as well seems as a simple problem and spend 4 hours on it searching a trying to fix the bug... working solo is a big struggle sometimes... GL
