Was I A Good Father? follows Madhav, whose short temper explodes under the pressure of an oppressive work life, and the demands of his children.
While the story unfolds in the mid-90s, it's narrated by Madhav's son, Avi, from the present. Through this narration, Avi expresses the fear he felt towards his father when he was a child, and the love he feels towards him now.
When Avi and his family moved to the U.S. from India, his father worked two office jobs while also studying computer science at a community college. He did all of this so his family could have a brighter future in America.
With that said, he often came home harboring a great deal of stress and anger. And oftentimes, that was taken out on Avi and his brother, Neev.
Despite this, Avi feels Madhav been a caring and loving father.
It's these mixed emotions that's at the heart of Was I A Good Father? I'm not interested in condemning or forgiving. I'm interested in trying to understand the kind of life that makes a person become violent towards their children, and in exploring the complicated emotional ambivalence I feel towards that.
