THE EMPIRICAL AUDIOPHILE
United States
Приєднався 1 сер 2020
Welcome to the new Empirical Audiophile cannel on used top end stereo equipment. After 50-years of being an audiophile I thought I would give some information on just how new audiophile can have great equipment, yet without breaking the bank to do so. Just because it’s old doesn’t mean it is out dated or doesn’t sound great. I most cases older equipment from high-end manufactures sound as good or better than the new equipment presented today to audiophiles but without the cost. You will find out from an aerospace mechanical engineer just what equipment is worth your time to audition, how good it’s made and can it be made better to meet today’s audiophiles needs.

What people don't know is that manufactures are lying to them about how to lubricate their turntables. In this video, I will show you the correct way to lubricate your turntable, so it will last for decades to come if not a lifetime.

Sade is pronounced Shah-day
I don't like the mastering of the Marcus Milelr cd's. They are mastered to hot for jazz.
is that a publicity?
Just a quick note. Premonition Records produced an SACD version of Patricia Barber's Cafe Blue which is also outstanding for those that have and SACD player.
Most of these reviewers won’t get stuff sent to them if they start telling their actual opinions. Lots of them have bad hearing too. If you watch z reviews he reviews dacs all the time, and he admits that he desent hear any difference in most of them. The cheap audio man thinks Polk rti a7s sound good. Don’t trust any of them until you have heard a few things they have reviewed, and you can tell if you agree with their opinions.
$600 back in 1975 is about $3500 today. Those altecs are basically a two way Cornwall and they are only $4500. So I’d say that’s pretty equivalent. I’m sure if you spend $20k you can get better horn speakers than either of these. I personally have a homemade three way altec Cornwall. I don’t see myself ever upgrading to something else.
19:56 You said bearing instead of bushing! 🫢
Smart guy, knows what he's talking about..
All horn problems were caused...3-ways (chopping the signal more), plastic ducts, cheap drivers, equally-alligning the tweeter w/ the midrange WITHOUT a HF adjustment knob..... No SET amps until tbe mid 90s...and only then, extremely expensive for the (good) output transformers, llike Lamm.....the speakers in this video were among the last worth buying....
Thankyou very much, I have the same marantz turntable.
I'd get the Conrad Johnson power supply filter can caps checked out for leakage they're 30 years old.
👍👍👍
MacIntosh has been bought out by Bose While I'm hear,as a hobbyist amplifier, speaker builder, and vintage turntable modifier restorer,if you are buying a tube amplifier no matter what brand and price,if the tube sockets are mounted on the PCB and not hard mounted onto the chassis,if you're tube roller you will regret it as you will crack solder joints, doesn't matter how much support there is under the PCB,you will crack solder joints and worse copper traces. There are probably 10 to 15 reviewers on UA-cam,I would not give the time of day,you know the ones I'm talking about the one that have the flashy channels with a production team😂
Many things are designed to fail. Incandescent bulbs were lasting too long so the engineers were told to shorten their lifetimes.
hi, can you tell us what brand turntables have a good and well made bearing?
Spatial speakers are very reasonably priced.
My favorites are the USB,HDMI and Power cables, and also those feet you put under your equipment,of which I have forgotten the brand. All snake oil!
You always want less friction on your shaft when you're inserting it in and out of the bush-ing 😉👍
Does this process also apply to direct drive turntables?
I doubt this concept of turntable in total. . Perfect tuentable starts with very sensitive and low weighting arm and pickup and very efficient electronic stabilization for driving normal weight platter revolutions. The havier is platter the more strain goes to driving it motor and transmission Escaping from fluctuations and vibration by adding big masses to everything arm included causes problems of friction in bushing, rigidity of construction, ,durability of materials and LPs. and needle wear.
Zzzzzzz.!!
You could of got to the point in 5 mins...
I disagree, even though he could have made a 60 second Tic Toc about it we would have missed all the passion expressed, I enjoyed every second of it. I hope he doesn't pay attention to your suggestion.
@@EGC69X I agree with his passion and some people would have found this informative which is appreciated. 27 mins for what it is, is a bit much..
like a wheel bearing on a cars axle shaft, the friction over time resonates to an audible level Early on it is somewhat noticeable and progressively becomes obviously apparent. this is where the audiophile argument comes in. If your mechanic replaces the wheel bearing at the early signs of play in the rim on the shaft, some will tell you the mechanic is screwing you because you didn't hear or feel something that they did. A decent needle will pick up and transfer that rumble of friction and play as a low frequency in your speakers. A good ear can easily hear it.
Thanks for sharing
have you ever heard the Cary Audio 300SLI. It a 300B integrated amp that sounds like what you are talking about here. You can pick up one for under $3000 used
You are absolutely correct ............i did this for almost 3 decades and the platter keeps spinning longer than 4 minutes ........and the sound improves a lot ( just like having an expensive upgrade in sound quality ) One one turntable I even used a drop of teflon oil in the syntetic oli and that spins for over 5 minutes . Great advice to audiophiles and it cost almost nothing ! The only thing that doesn't lie to you is YOUR own ears . To many believe the marketing hype !
What type of oil is best to use,?
I use MOBIL F1 ( and sometimes a drop of SLICK 50 )
@@frankgeeraerts6243The Teflon in the Slick 50 will drop out of solution in time.
You earned a sub
Been working well for 70 years, but I fixed it!
I love your direct original thoughts , most UA-camrs just re echo what the they see hear from the herd
Thanks for this very usefull info and warning for the turntable fraud, but too technical for me...Fortunately I only spin cd disc on a CEC tl3N and a Sugden AU51 Transport.
I have been using this and the rotational speed got more accurate ALG Go-Juice 0000 Very-Thin Gun Grease Is this too viscous ? Very informative video Thank You
well if the cds sound excelent and i have several, imagine how good the vinyl sounds and i have a concert that was directelly recording into DAT and what a sound ,basic three guitars and drums also the voice in a doble LP record but if you hear the cd it´s horrible, so not digital against analogue but every format against compact disc format, but this new wave of vinyl readers and cartridges are so low quality that i don´t call it a turntable but only a vinyl reader for children from 6 to 10 years old by CHICO , from around 4.000€ the vinyl reader and the cartridge apart will be like 100€ turntables from early 90´s or even late 80´s technics turntables and belt driven allthough there was a fully automatic with direct drive with the cartridge having a optical sensor to aligne the stylus in the groove correct position as released in 79 if not earlier the T4P from technics, many br4ands used tghis system in their new 80´s plastic turntables, one thing is a good turntable with a plastic frame but i´m refering to total plastic built plinth with every error since resonance to static at levels never heard before then, but those with several apliences could be corrected while new vinyl readers are horrible well i bought a P10 from Rega and a Tech Das Airforce one turntable ,two cartridges i bought for this last turntable the best modern one, i own and i did bought two said to be good turntables in the 80´s and one excelent in my opinion in 96 , but all need repairs while 7 technics and 4 Pioneers i bought in the 70´s are still working like new with original cartridges except two shure and one AT, those 40 tom 50 something years are still without any problem by doing the maintenace sugested in their manuals, that many never had done it , even though they still work
I heard Conrad Johnson premier 5? Not too sure but with large Bozak concerto speakers =magical!!!
I tame my horn speakers with Mosfet solid state amps and a equalizer.
Please title the videos in a usefully descriptive way. I want to know what it is that I'm about to watch or not watch.
Several UA-cam channels have been threatened with lawsuits because they were not harsh, just honest, that part of the rant is missing perspective.
Liked your video, but burn in is a fact. No way around it! Min 200hrs. You can hear it!
I love everything about them except I can’t afford them 😂
It is about time someone came straight out with this ... The simple truth is that all new product reviews are simply *advertising* . No shill reviewer is going to give an honest review of a bad product... his supply lines and his "monetization" would dry up overnight. Very simply... any company selling overpriced or poorly made equipment deserves to end up in bankruptcy. We owe them nothing. Five audiophile "guide to sanity" rules... 1) Any company making claims that cannot be verified from credible sources outside the audiophile community is lying to you. Cable manufacturers, in particular, are very fond of making stuff up to sell their worthless products. In fact, because of them, there is an amazing body of "science" within the audiophile community that simply does not exist anywhere else... and it's not because we are smarter. 2) *ALL* subjective reviews are advertising. They're okay to let you know a product exists, but they are not a critique of the product. In many cases the device under review is not even hooked up and listened to. The smoother and more colourful the presentation, the greater the likelihood it's fake news. 3) Measurements do matter. These are the realities of what a device can and cannot do, most often taken with equipment orders of magnitude more sensitive than the human ear. You ignore things like Frequency Response, Distortion, Noise and Power at your own peril. Anyone experienced with reading the graphs can look at them and tell you what a device should sound like, with reasonable accuracy. 4) Audiophile "buzzwords" like "soundstage", "synergy", "prat" and so on are a secret code telling you the guy speaking knows not of what he speaks. If he did know what he's talking about, he would not use made up terms to describe a product. 5) Electronics does not have a "burn in" period. Cables do not have a "break in" period. The break in period for speakers and phono cartridges is a few minutes, just to get the moving parts moving. It will never be longer than the return window. This is simply a way for manufacturers to avoid mass returns of mediocre products.
I bought mine in 1975. Way too heavy for a single guy to haul around…
The algorithms reward and incentivise these UA-cam salesman who pretend to be "reviewers" They like to make claims about what they can hear yet NEVER back their claims up with any evidence. Every single one of them is terrified of a double blind ABX test because they know they will FAIL them everytime!!!!!!! Its much easier to just make their unsubstantiated claims and collect their kickbacks. Try calling them out on their BS and they'll shadow ban you, they're charlatans.
I already known some of that CD’s but not all of them, I will look for them. Talking about sound quality, your voices sounds to much compressed, perhaps an agressive noise reduction algorithm. Take care of this. Regards
I my experience when i raise the volume it sounds bigger more than "louder" if that makes sense. It doesn't scare me
Rudy Van Geller is the sound engineer of a lot of Blue Note album s big fan
Excellent video There are a lot of UA-cam shill reviewers You can smell the desperation for money over integrity Begging for Super Chat money is embarrassing
Please, please, please title each video to indicate its content in some way. Having every video with the same title (your channel name) is making your channel much less usable. That's a shame because you have some good stuff.
I totally agree. It helps to number them too.
You're absolutely right 👍 Anyway you never hear the device under review as a stand alone , you hear it as a part of the whole system and how it integrates in (including room acoustics), and anyway all reviews are subjective and heavily depend on personal taste.

I think you’ve hit directly on the nerve of this hobby.. I will say that I truly believe there to be another side equally as dishonest. That being the militant measuring crowd. With zero proof I believe not only are people paid to talk up unworthy products, I believe in my heart there are militant measures paid to smear competitors. Erin’s audio corner is the ONLY UA-cam reviewer I respect and trust to be honest.when it comes to measuring equipment. He actually illustrates potential issues with the measurements and explains how that translates to what the sonic difference will be. Being told whether I should like something based solely on a schematic is arrogance at its finest. It should only serve to highlight limitations of a product. Listen to people you trust and be your own reviewer.
And how do you think these products are developed? There is no sound inside an amplifier... it's an electrical signal and the only choice is to use measuring equipment (scope, analyser, multimeter, etc) to test and verify their function. There's not a single audio product on the market that has not be developed on test equipment. You want the truth about what a device can or can't do... study the measurements.
@@Douglas_Blake To be clear my comments are not about the measurements they are about the people that misuse them. Yes measurements are crucial in manufacturing. they are not in subjective preferences. I have no idea nor do I care what the measurements of a Bose 901 speakers is. It was widely received as a great speaker. I myself did not care for it along with others. Measurements does not settle this preference and determine one side right or wrong. The absolute vitriol I hear on some sites form the content creator and especially the commenters is disgusting. It is obvious that measurements are selectively chosen to bolster the snake oil claims cheaper manufactures use to invalidate more expensive units. To what degree they may be correct is a value judgement. Assignments of personal value, and tonality cannot be measured. All they can do is act as guard rails. I can honestly say that I have listened to a speaker four times the cost of mine that I didn't care for. the measurements do not matter to me. My personal taste does along with what financial costs are.
@@bobr9605 No argument ... if you don't like it (on a subjective level) it's very unlikely you will enjoy it no matter what the specs say. Measurements, in a buying decision are important, they let you weed out the stinkers before you end up having to return or modify things. For example I'm not gong to spend $2000 on a speaker that has a crossover dip in it's response curves (no amount of eq or dsp can fix that). Instead I'll spend $400 on one that doesn't. Thank you for clarifying. We really aren't that far apart. Happy listening.
Thank you, I really do like having a discussion with others with a differing point of view. I learn more from people like you with reasoned points of view. What I have learned quickly is that is is a very personal hobby enjoyed differently.by all. To those like you that make the measurements a part of that process I say enjoy. For me the acquisition of a system has been a life long journey of desire culminating in a retirement purchase. With zero regrets. It should be of no surprise to you my understanding of the application of measurements is extremely limited. I’m not an engineer nor do I wish to be. I am a lover of listening to music to the best of my ability with my ears kept in check by my wallet. It was a long process I’m glad I took the time to do. Thank you again Enjoy the music!!!!!
@@bobr9605 I spend large parts of my life searching for reasoned and sensible discussion... you might be surprised how rare it is. I am also retired and my current system is a retirement gift to myself. But I am also an electronics technician so I do put value in measurements; that's how you fix stuff 😉 For the most part the various plots and graphs aren't that complex. They actually do connect with reality. For example a "frequency response" chart basically tells you if there is any variation in loudness at various pitches (frequencies). That expensive speaker with the crossover dip, usually around 2khz, is probably going to be lacking in vocal clarity. Or one with a big bulge at 100hz is going to be boomy sounding. It is just a waste of time to even consider either. If I can read a chart and rule it out without all the fuss of ordering, waiting, listening, returning then ordering something else over and over... then the measurements have served me well. I'm a big fan of "digging deeper" and always learning new stuff. It's part of the fun of this whole tinkerer's hobby. The more you know the easier it is to get things together and working. For me it's all about the music. My system right now is very stable so I'm not prone to mess with it. I will work on a system until it gives me what I want and then, unless it complains, I'm good for just sitting back and "lovin' ma tunes". Happy listening!
The issue, I believe, begins with individuals labeling themselves as "audiophiles." This self-identification often shifts the focus from the music itself to an obsessive emphasis on equipment. As a result, this reverence for gear makes these so-called "audiophiles" more vulnerable to fake reviews, biased influencers, pseudoscientific claims, and even outright mysticism. Unfortunately, the FTC is unlikely to address this problem because the root cause lies with the "audiophiles" themselves. This "hobby" has become akin to worshiping equipment and engaging in rituals, such as "burning in" cables, which are devoid of scientific merit. Over time, this has fostered a community so deeply entrenched in self-deception that they fervently believe their own myths, to the point of viewing rational skepticism as unreasonable or even absurd. To me, the word "audiophile" has essentially become a dirty word-one that no longer represents a love for music, but instead identifies members of a cult fixated on their own misguided rituals and beliefs. Audiophiles screw themselves.
