How Can I Ask My Parents For A Pet Snake
What’s up friends and family! Welcome back to another episode of Let's Talk Herps! My name is Steven, and today we’re diving into a topic that has been coming up a lot lately - how to ask your parents to get you a snake! 🐍
Before we get started, let me introduce you to my buddy, Summer. Summer here is a rosy boa, one of the common choices for a first pet snake. But before you can have a Summer of your own, you may need to have a very important conversation with your parents. So, how would I do that? Let’s break it down!
First things first, I’d have to show my parents that I’m ready for the responsibility. Snakes are amazing pets, but they need proper care just like any other animal. They need someone RESPONSIBLE.
I’d start by helping out more around the house. I’d do my chores without being asked, keep my room tidy, and be responsible with my homework. I’d show them that I’m mature and dependable enough to help care for myself, so I can also care for a snake.
Next up, let’s talk about the cost. Owning a snake isn’t just about buying the snake itself. You’ll need a proper enclosure, heating elements, substrate, food, and maybe even some vet visits. Make a list of all the things you’ll need and their costs. This shows your parents that you
understand it’s not a one-time expense. Maybe even offer to pitch in some of your allowance or birthday money!
For a starter snake like Summer, you might be looking at anywhere from $150 to $500 (or a lot more) [SCROLL $150 - $500+] for all the setup and the snake itself, depending on how you build your enclosure. Monthly costs for food and upkeep will be less, but they’re still important to consider.
Now, let’s talk research. My parents loved to see that I’d done my homework. If I had to ask them to buy me a snake, I’d learn everything I could about the type of snake I wanted. How big does it get? How often does it need to be fed? What kind of environment does it need? Knowing these answers would show that I’m serious and prepared.
Know who to buy from? There’s a wide community of snake keepers and breeders on social media. But if you need to go into a store to do it, look for a specific reptile store, not just a big box pet store or someone off of craigslist. The specialized store may be further away, but it’s worth it for the higher quality of animals and information.
Lastly, I’d show how I was committed. This isn’t just a phase or a whim. I’d explain why I’m passionate about snakes and what I really love about them. To me, it’s a connection to class of life that’s been on this planet for hundreds of millions of years.
I also learned something early on. Moms love cards. Especially, handwritten cards. So if I had the money, I’d buy a card and write a note, but sometimes it was just a folded piece of paper in an envelope. What mattered was what was on the inside.
I never actually tried that on my parents. I think it probably would have worked. But also know that it may take them some time to come to terms with the idea. Or they may absolutely love the idea of you having a wall of snakes, but it’s just not in the budget, that’s OK too. It certainly plays into my decisions on a daily basis. The point is, be persistent, but BE PATIENT.
But tell me what you think? Let me know in the comments, hit the like button and support the channel on Patreon. This is the first in a series of videos about snakes as family pets. I hope you’ll stick around for the next. If you ask me questions on these videos, I’ll do my best to answer them in the following videos.

    Great message! I spent a year going to the library, researching, and demonstrating my enthusiasm to my parents, and that this enthusiasm was not a passing fad. It worked out as I got my first Cal King Snake as a result when I was like 9 or 10. The rest is history!

    I have heard other keepers say that bioactive really only works with small critters like dart frogs. For large animals you still need to remove poo or it will stink pretty bad. And removing it from a very complex terrarium could be a challenge. My L geckos poo stunk soooo bad even though it was so small. VERY pungent.

    • @LetsTalkHerps
      @LetsTalkHerps 23 дні тому

      It’s been completely manageable for me. A lot of people in the reptile community SAY things but not a lot of people DO things. As a result a lot of small issues become conflated with disastrous issues, which isn’t really the case. Yes, a big snake’s waste will accumulate quickly and can cause an odor if the clean up crew is unable to handle it, but each species is different and I’ve seen 150 lb retics kept in large bioactive enclosures with large waste removed but many droppings just taken care of by a dynamic clean up crew. Like all things, a little research goes a long way.

      I find lizard poop to be particularly stanky.

  • @af7409
    @af7409 25 днів тому

    I don’t understand why a partially ‘cooked’ meal would be less digestible than a raw meal? I imagine there could be other adverse effects of partially cooking a rodent; less nutrition or trace vitamins lost/denatured, but that would just make the meal less nutritious, not less digestible?

    • @LetsTalkHerps
      @LetsTalkHerps 25 днів тому

      Good thoughts. But the denatured proteins are digested differently. In some cases it actually makes the nutrition more biologically available and EASIER to digest. However there are some serious concerns. The first is bacteria. Unless you get the whole prey up to 165+ for sustained temps, the in tact digestive system is loaded with harmful bacteria that in normal amounts your snake can easily handle, but can proliferate in heat and also in the cooked prey. I couldn’t find any studies on any negative effects cooked prey has for the snake upon consuming. However, I’ve found plenty of anecdotes of keepers who let the prey get too hot and the snakes refused it, likely due to a change in smell which would be very noticeable to a very scent-sensitive animal like a rainbow boa. So I’m not sure if Dave said they can’t digest it, if he did I’m sure that was an assumption based on the fact that the snake won’t eat it. Ultimately there’s possibly no real science to prove either way because I couldn’t find any research on it. If it’s something you’re considering, speak to a vet first. Personally I don’t see the point, they certainly never get the chance for cooked prey in the wild.

      @LetsTalkHerps If nothing else, I find there is the unmistakable scent of decomposition if they are left un-eaten overnight and a little "over cooked." I have no doubt they can smell it sooner than me.

    I stated proteins denature at 121 or 125 Fahrenheit. I was incorrect. It is 104.6 degrees. Be mindful how hot the water is when defrosting prey.

    The rainbow boa does not dig up and destroy all the plants?

    • @LetsTalkHerps
      @LetsTalkHerps 3 місяці тому

      Sometimes! I try and stay with tough species of plants. But once the roots are down for a few months, the snakes tend to know where they are and burrow around or elsewhere. But you have to be comfortable with some plant loss as well as propagating your overgrowth too.
