How-To:Maximus-3 Recovery Point Install/10 Month Review on Jeep JL/JLU
Nice video. ZF recommend getting to 30C temp first; hold engine speed at 2,000 rpm in Park for 30 seconds to fill the torque converter; check temp again; go thru P, R, D, D1, D2 for 10 seconds each; check temp again; then do the fill as long as below 50C. Hope this helps someone.
Thanks! I followed the procedure on Alldata. Start “below” 86° F, go through the gears for 5 secs each, fill between 86°F & 122°F. Having done this procedure twice, I get the same results…an initial fill, top off, then recheck at the specified temps. All good with the same outcome both times with the fluid seeping out of the fill hole in that temp range upon check and the same after driving 66 miles for the day.
How many quarts of fluid should be purchased? That stuff is expensive, so don't want to buy too much.
There’s a direct link in the description, 6 qts on Amazon for 91.25 right now. Best price you will find after I searched for weeks. That transmission is around 6-7k part cost alone and something like the Valvoline multi vehicle transmission fluid that is popular IS the wrong viscosity for this transmission. I found a graph of several brands showing that. The Mopar/ZF brand is the thinnest fluid out there.
@@odysseyusa Thanks, did you end up using most of the 6 quarts?
You’re welcome. I ended up using over 5 quarts, maybe as much as 5 1/2.
Cool looking place.
It is. I’m hoping to try to get back out there next year but I’m not sure what the calendar looks like, etc.
Excellent video and great time lapse! I can’t wait to get out there.
Thanks! You could stay out there a week and still be able to come back to do more later.
I have this same transmission in my Grand Cherokee. I also bought the lifetime/unlimited mileage (yep you could get that in 2015) Mopar Warranty. The old mechanic in me knows I should be changing that fluid according to at least ZF's recommendations, but asking several dealers and the warranty place, I kept getting told I had to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for fluid changes or the warranty might be voided should the transmission fails. Of course that recommendation is lifetime fluid, don't change it. I finally decided it's on them if it fails and so be it. I'm now at 200k on original fluid. I've run the hell out of this thing. I've checked the level twice and both times it was still clearish green. Still don't feel good about not changing it, but there are the results I've had anyway. Too many more miles and I'll be at the point the cost of a replacement transmission will exceed the value of the vehicle and the Mopar warranty won't cover it anyway, so I might go ahead and change it soon anyway. BTW no issues at all so far with the transmission on that original fluid other than my nerves.
We had the lifetime on our 15 Grand Cherokee as well. We ended up getting something bigger. If I’d planned to keep it until the wheels fell off, I’d of changed it and there’s no way they could’ve been able to tell. There’s no paint marks, tamper deterrent at all. I’d also not of wanted the hassle of being without my vehicle for to preventative maintenance which ZF themselves recommends under normal, not heavy duty, service. I do understand why you haven’t though. It was a great warranty.
@@odysseyusa Yeah it's too bad you can't get that specific warranty any more, although I never had to use it yet. I've been saving it for something major. I still have the GC and just bought a 2024 Gladiator, so I doubt I'll drive the GC a whole lot any more. Great quick video on how to change the fluid BTW.
The Gladiator will be a lot of fun and thanks! Happy to help.
Thank you so much 🙏 I will share this video on social media to get you more subscribers
The more the merrier! Thanks!
Pro Tip... Leave your AC off while the engine is running as you're topping off so that the condensate water doesn't run down the transmission and look like a leak, causing minor panic before you realize that it's just water and that you're an idiot. :)
😆
Nice informative vid. Thanks man
No problem 👍
thanks for the video. I'll save it for when I make the change. I'm currently on 45,000 miles. .
Happy to help!
Hey it doesn't hurt to do it at 45,000 miles, I'm thinking of doing mine at 30,000 miles
It can only help!
@@dawood2u Too Early unless your towing heavy loads A LOT. Recommended change interval is 60K but it's your Benjamin's flying away. Do what thou wilt.
Great video, comprehensive, easy to follow and concise. 4x4 Mechanic shop quoted me $525.00 to do this. And the Jeep Dealer said it “is a sealed system and the oil can’t be changed”. Ha ha yeah right.
Yeah lol, that’s highway robbery for this afternoon job with simple tools. I’m surprised the dealer seemed to not want to do it. That’s odd. I’m glad it was helpful and saved you some cash! Thanks for the support👍🏼
What cup number to remove the spark plug
Socket? It’s a 5/8” spark plug socket. You will need a dedicated spark plug socket that is either magnetic or has a rubber gripper inside the socket to hold the spark plug in the socket to get it out and keep it from falling into the spark plug tube, disturbing the spark plug grond strap/spark plug gap.
Amazing. I have always been worried about this whole concept of Lifetime transmission oil. I don't believe it, nor do I think it actaully works on the long term. I live in a country where the summer temperatures range between 120-130F.
Thank you! I’m glad it was helpful to you. I think they use it as more of a selling point trying to minimize the perception of maintenance needed. If you want the best service life, I’d follow ZF transmission’s recommended service interval of 60,000 miles. Also, given that motor oil degrades just sitting on the shelf (check out The Motor Oil Geek for a video on that and the myth you can shake an oil bottle to mix it back up) I don’t think I’d let it go without a service over 60k miles or 3(?) years. Thanks for watching👍🏼
I made my own afew year's ago had some 3/16 aluminum plate laying around and bought some longer screws painted everything black cost me about 10 bucks now i own a jl i know they have the same issue so ill build somemore looks like that part is over 100 buck's maybe i should build some and make money lol BTW gr8 video u did a nice job on it!!
Right on with the entrepreneurial spirit! Yeah, those visors have skyrocketed in price. Thanks for the compliment!
Camped at Doris many times. Now I own a place in Medicine Park. Love it. 😊
A local! It was a really nice place to visit and start the night. Super quiet too. I’m glad I stopped on my way to MERUS Adventure Park, SE of Amarillo,TX. I never thought I’d see cotton fields growing in SW Oklahoma. 😁
Great video thanks sir, I have the 2.0 4 cylinder so this helped a bunch. Much easier than the 6 cylinder I see.
You’re welcome. Happy to help! I’m about to do plugs on a ‘21 3.6 so that’s going to be a learning experience.
July 2024- I just want to take a second to point out the video was recorded almost 3 years ago when the price of the visor was $20 and $12 shipping for the passenger side visor. I scoured the internet to find that price and was happy to find it for that low price at allmoparparts. The driver side with the garage door controls was significantly higher. Now, that same visor part number has increased to $126 through the same vendor! Wow. Inflation really is in effect on that part. Anyway, I just want to give people a heads up on this. Thanks for your support and have a good one.
It’s a beautiful area. I always enjoy traveling in my jeep there. I need to finish the OAT in southwestern Oklahoma soon.
It is and Doris Campground was really nice too. I’m not sure how much he’s done but my cousin has been doing sections of the OAT.
An outstanding tutorial. It’s clear and simple. Thanks.
Thanks for the great feedback!
it is more than 20 dollars for the visor like 110-160 depending on where u get it
Inflation. I’ve heard it’s went up….A LOT! Crazy. I paid that low price almost 3 years ago now. Even then, the driver side with the garage door controls was significantly more making the passenger side feel like a steal of a price. I went ahead a pinned a post letting viewers know. At least the information on the visor replacement procedure and the addition of the TACCOM clips is still useful.
The noise they made coming out, put anti seize on them
NGK specifically state not to due to a special coating applied. The plugs I installed are the factory plugs so they seem to agree. Also, when you apply anti seize, you inhibit the ability of the plug to transfer heat from the plug to the cylinder head and the coolant flowing through them. This will lead to a hot plug, increased wear, and possibly preignition at worst. The squeak isn’t anything to be concerned about.
Do you have to disconnect the battery prior to replacing spark plugs?
I did not but it’s generally good practice to disconnect the battery when working with anything electrical like connectors. Having done this for years, I’ve not had a bad experience leaving them on for something like this but I probably should have. These newer vehicles can be finicky and it only takes another minute to disconnect them.
@@odysseyusa Thank you for responding. I’d rather leave them on so I don’t have to potentially deal with a bunch of resets to factory settings
Just to report that I changed the spark plugs on my 19 Wrangler JLUS with little to no effort thanks to your video. Also, there was no need for me to remove any connectors on plugs 2,3 and 4. I removed the coils with connectors still attached to them. And for spark plug #2, I’d just wiggle it around the other cables to come out (coils are flexible and rubbery). The first one was the only one needed connector removed and your tip to sacrifice a small screwdriver worked like a charm!
@nemomilo333 It’s great to hear the video helped you out and thanks for sharing your experience!
Excellent video, appreciate it! Now lets do a timing chain tensioner!
Oh I’m hoping that switching up my oil viscosity can stave that off for a long time. I’ve been running what’s considered a thick version of 5w-30, Valvoline Extended Protection High Mileage. It’s got a strong additive pack too. Needing to do an oil change the other day and after more research on the BITOG forum, I’ve decided to try the Mobil 1 European Car FS 5w-40. Man! It’s so quiet now! The main thing with the 3.6 rocker failure issue is thermal breakdown. These newer cars need a higher HTHS, high temp high shear rating. Manufacturers’ primary care is to get you past the warranty period. I hope the video helps you out. Have a good one.👍🏼
Great video, coincidentally as I ordered parts I noticed a whine when downshifting so my assumption is the fluids a little low. So i guess good timing.
Thank you! Yes, a whine can be a symptom of low fluid level and the pump drawing some air into the system.
@@odysseyusa Just finished my service. Put 5.5 back in, definitely the trans was under filled for sure. Much like you i also purchased a new gasket but the metal gasket looked fine after cleaning. torqued to 11nm also.
That’s great to hear I was of help. It’s not unusual to hear a whining noise from the transmission when it’s really low due to air being drawn up through the filter and into the pump. How many KM/miles did the fluid have on it? Was it considerably dark?
This video is clear, straight to the point, and most importantly, includes your experience and suggestion about reusing the original gasket. Thanks!
I packed all the info and tips in there while I also tried my best to keep it as brief as possible. My goal was to make it beginner friendly too. If the gasket is in good shape and is pliable at the sealing bead, I don’t think anyone will have a problem reusing the one like my transmission has.
Great video man - thank you . Used your Facebook post to get here
Thank you and I hope it helps out. 👍🏼

I was thinking, "did this man seriously use a torque wrench for his engine cover?" But you know what, it doesn't hurt, and I now know the torque rating.
Lol, yeah. I guess it’s the Air Force Crew Chief in me.

I’d love to go up that hill in our wille and see the abandoned train bridges Not sure exactly where it is though? I can’t see to figure out where that gate is to enter.
Let me see if I can get you oriented. Find the town of Scenic on the map. Go southeast (East Highway 44) from there about 5-6 miles it looks like (I’m looking on Gaia GPS). The gate will be on the right with a forest service visitor board on the left of the gate if I recall correctly. The trail shows that it’s 6.16 miles long. I hope that helps. I’d avoid it if it’s muddy. That stuff will suck you in if it’s wet. It’s very fine dirt.
@@odysseyusaperfect I found it. We’re going May 2nd so hopefully we miss the rain.

Wow. That looks great! I might try those in the Rubicon. Here’s a link to a video explaining the SideStasher features.ua-cam.com/video/rGgQPt0UNrQ/v-deo.htmlsi=StyIhgtK5vVNJRR8
Can you put a little bit of Anti seize on the threads, that sound is cringing .
NGK recommends against it. As a former engine machinist/builder, it’s normal for them to be a little sticky but be sure not to cross thread them. I would not use a ratchet until a few threads were properly engaged. Then torque to spec. Using anti seize lowers friction. The torque wrench works on resistance. Lowering resistance will put you higher on torque to the spark plug than spec’d. Any lubricant will. All that said, it’s up to you. If you put any on, set the torque wrench to the minimum torque spec at least.
Also, anti-seize will hamper the plugs ability to transfer heat from the plug to the cylinder head that is supposed to happen to make the plug run cooler.
Very cool! you all had some great adventures there. Love that saw. Excellent video
Thanks Chris! Yeah, that saw saved the trip. I keep it as backup to my argh argh chainsaw. 😁

Hey! We just bought this jeep! We really love it! You don't by chance still have the rear windows do you! We don't need the extra fuel in our adventures and would like the visibility back. Also why did you get rid of it? It's awesome!
That’s great to hear! Are you in the Louisville region? I think I still have the glass in the garage. If you’re taking the panels off, could we do an even swap? Though the Jeep has sentimental value due to memories with my Dad who passed, family needs forced the sale due to it being the only paid off vehicle. It’s a great, reliable, and capable Jeep and I’d be happy to answer any questions you may have or share my knowledge of it that you may not think to ask.
We live in New Albany, Indiana! Would definitely be interested in swapping.
Im convinced that Jeep, as a corecompany value, believes that anybody doing the most basic maintenance or repairs, can go f*ck themselves 😂. Thanks for the clear and informational video!

I'm gonna be a little heavy on the questions lol I've been following your build for a few years on the forums, interesting that you chose to go to the kenda after running the Baja boss at. I'm running kendas on mine, 35x12.50r17, and my next tire I wanna look at was the Falken Wildpeak RT or the Baja boss at. How do you like the kenda compared to the Baja boss? Mine have this small issue where they seem to flat spot but my kendas are lasting a long time. They're around 14/32nds of tread and about 30k miles so far on them. What's that rear quarter storage bag? I like the idea of it and have some tools I'd wanna keep up in there. I was debating between the ox or an eaton and ended up doing the eaton and 4.56 combo, but do you have any issues with the RCVs slinging grease? Next thing for my jeep is going to be shafts and steering. revkit.com/cptfloridaman/ I'm also on the forum with that username.
