How-To:THE Complete 3.6 eTorque Belts and Pulleys Replacement
www.youtube.com/@odysseyusa?sub_confirmation=1
This video is specific to the Wrangler 3.6 eTorque (my Rubicon is a '21) though there may be similarities with the Ram and other possible 3.6 eTorque vehicles I may be unaware of.
Although my belts looked good and I only had a pulley squeal once at just over 100K miles on our Wrangler, I opted to move forward with replacing them for peace of mind. If a pulley or belt goes out, it's probably going to be inconvenient and much more so if you're far away from town. It can also leave you with damage under the hood from a flying belt or worse, like overheating your engine and lack of steering since the accessory belt turns the water pump & power steering pump. I didn't want to chance it.
I couldn't find another video on this job so I decided to share how to do this yourself, saving almost $500 in labor according to my local dealer in the S. Indiana, N. Kentucky area at the time of recording this video in Nov 2024.
If you have any question or see that I missed something, please feel free to ask or point out your findings.

www.youtube.com/@odysseyusa?sub_confirmation=1 My local dealership quoted $910.30 Labor PLUS the part costs below for a total of $1257.52 plus sales tax to do this job! One more thing! Even though I mentioned going through the torque sequence twice on the lower and upper intake, I'd do the same on the oil cooler as well. That and use the thread locker, or equivalent, that I mentioned. With both...

How-To:Maximus-3 Recovery Point Install/10 Month Review on Jeep JL/JLU
My favorite part was the kayaking. Got a good laugh (a few of them actually)! Looks like y'all had a great day outdoors 🙂
We had a great day and I got better with kayaking as we went on. The struggle was real though 😆 . That’s some solid exercise!
Nice review of the area, I'll be adding this to my list of places to stop at.
@@RandyPennysAdventures Thank you! I don’t think many people know there’s terrain like this in Oklahoma. Just a few more hours away and you could also check out Merus Adventure Park SE of Amarillo if you’re looking for more to do.
4/2003- I chipped off all the flaking powder coat getting them both to bare metal. I then used rustoleum black paint that's easy to find for touch ups. They should offer them bare metal.
Living on the East side of the country, you have to drive pretty far to reach those abundant and beautiful public lands of the west. We stopped at a Hipcamp host for an overnight stay. How do you tackle long road trips these days? I used to be able to drive 13+ hours at a time pit stopping for gas and snacks. Not anymore!
Did you know there's a real trail in the Badlands? I saw this on a map, looked at the satellite view, and put it down as a stop. It did not disappoint.
There's a few nice campgrounds in the area but this one is as close to a sure thing as you'll get from what I hear.
This is an easy trail/road for any vehicle with decent ground clearance when dry. If it recently rained a fair amount, you'd want high clearance and 4x4. There's also a free roam off-road area in the region. Look into it.
Anyone have any trails in the region they would recommend? Perhaps with just a little more challenge than these trails here would be nice when we return to the Black Hills.
This trip gave a vibe out of Jurassic Park when they are watching the grazing dinosaurs. Obviously there's no dinosaurs but the easy going nature of these trails, wide open scenery with a background of tree and snow capped peaks, felt peaceful and relaxing. There was no rush on this beautiful, brisk air day in Bighorn National Forest.
The valley just off the highway made us feel small, like we were approaching a gateway to the Absaroka Mountains. Beyond the gate was a pristine wilderness taking you back to the times of adventurous exploration of the West.
If I was to re-do this part of our trip, I'd definitely go via the Beartooth Highway ("The Highway to the Sky") and into Cooke City next time. The Beartooth is supposed to be one of the most scenic highways in the country. It was pretty far out of the way to backtrack and start on the east end of it. Does anyone have any stops they would recommend in the region of the Absaroka Mountains?
This was the Spring of '23 and was held at the Blackwell Campground in the Hoosier National Forest not far from Bloomington, Indiana and less than an hour from I65 and Indianapolis. It was a great time to meet with like-minded enthusiasts of the outdoors who share their experiences on UA-cam. Do you have any other recommendations in the region?
The Wind River Range is well known for it's awe inspiring backcountry beauty but even if you don't have the time or ability to get that deep into the wilderness, here's a couple of starting points for some mostly vehicular driven exploration destinations for the region. Head a little further north from where we went, and it evokes what you'd expect from some of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the world. If you have any questions, ask below and I'll answer promptly. Thanks for your time!
If you're looking for a trail in eastern Kentucky and considering all or part of the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway, this is a great section and not too far from the popular 5 rated Pumpkin Hollow Road, 4 rated Spaas Creek, and the 7 rated Cold Iron Fork Road trails. Clifton Road is rated a 3/10. If you have any questions, feel free to ask below for a quick response and thanks for your time.
If you're in the region, I think this is a great stop in southwestern Oklahoma and did you see they grow cotton there? I was on my way to Merus Adventure Park southeast of Amarillo, TX but wanted to make a point to stop somewhere that always seemed just out of the way enough that I'd never see it if I didn't stop this time around. I'm glad I did and now that I plan to go to Merus Adventure Park again, I'll be stopping in for an overnight stay once more in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.
If you’ve been to Merus, what trails or other attractions would you recommend? If you’re planning to go for the first time, what’s your thinking on trails here in the video? Do you think I conveyed the nature of the trail well to make you confident your rig is good to go on it?
Need a better pic to understand how to disconnect the coil connectors? See post #52 in the below link. www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/spark-plug-change-on-3-6-penstar.122868/page-4 Which oil cooler and spark plugs are you thinking of using?
So does this job seem more or less difficult for you than you initially thought? I didn't expect to find that I'd need to disconnect the lower coolant hoses to get the accessory belt off.😑 It's not like the old days when you could do this in 15 minutes but hopefully the video helps you get it done in an afternoon. Likes and shares will get this video's eventually needed info widely distributed to other 3.6 eTorque owners. Thanks for your time and support.
If you're near I65 up around Indianapolis or in the Bloomington, Indiana area and looking for a nice and quiet place to stop and camp for the night, this is a great choice. You can camp in a tent all the way up to an RV here and there's convenient hiking trailheads to use.
If you've never been and caught the sunrise over Red River Gorge, you can't go wrong seeing it at Hanson's Point overlook if you're in the eastern Kentucky region. There's a multitude of great hiking trails, arches galore, and waterfalls to be seen.
I've made a lot of modest mods that, together, have significantly increased this Sahara's off-road capability beyond that of a stock JLU Rubicon. In addition to increased off-road agility, I've increased storage capacity and interior convenience, including being able to sleep inside the Jeep with modest moving of stored items when stopping for the night. I look at this as a sleeper build where at a quick glance, it's not that special. When you look into the details, it's a well thought out, evenly upgraded, somewhat minimalist, budget off-road and overloading platform.
What's your favorite part of Red River Gorge? If you haven't been yet, what activities do you have in mind so far? Even though I struggled, I got some laughs at my own expense while kayaking. I'm glad I did it and my wife and I will get a chuckle from it for years. If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comment section below and I'll do my best to help.
With the high cost of vehicle repairs and longer wait times for competent service centers these days, I wanted to share the step-by-step procedure to keep that expensive transmission properly serviced to give it a good chance at a long life. Please share any questions or pointers you may have with other visitors here in the comment section. Thanks for your time and see you on the next one!
Need a better pic to understand how to disconnect the coil connectors? See post #52 in the below link. www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/spark-plug-change-on-3-6-penstar.122868/page-4
4/2023- I removed both sides and flaked every last bit of powder coating off as it was all coming off anyway. I don’t even live in the rust belt. I cleaned them up and sprayed them with black rustoleum. Now I can easily touch up with easy to find paint.
Very nice video and explanation. My '23 Etorque only has 9K miles right now, but it is good to know how to service the belts and pulleys.
@@timlewis6802 Thanks! I do my best with every how-to to give every detail needed, every obstacle one may encounter to give confidence where anyone can do this themselves. From beginner to expert, you can know it’s done right while saving money for other things…like other Jeep parts!
On the 2nd spark plug that is under those connectors and is under the pipe, I was able to snake it out and back in without moving any of them. Those clips were the hardest part of getting them out haha
There ya go! Yes, those clips take some figuring out sometimes and that engine heat makes the plastic fragile.
I about to tackle this job. Thanks for the video. If I run into any problems I will let you know
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
Awesome video! Thanks!
Thanks, glad it was helpful!
Why would you replace the plastic housing with another plastic housing versus just going with the dorman? That is fully metal
@destroyerlord5161 The Dorman is still using the old style figure 8 gasket like I show in the video and that is the reason for the oil/coolant leaks. This figure 8 gasket design, with no common wall, is the one that lets oil and coolant go back and forth contaminating the oil with coolant (not good for the rockers/cam) and contaminating the coolant with oil in some cases when it fails. As to aluminum vs the plastic in regards to changing the oil filter and potentially cracking the filter housing, I use a torque wrench for the filter cap set to 18 ft lbs. I don’t let anyone else touch it.
Great video! Merus is a really good place to go.
Thanks! I wish I hadn’t run out of storage on the second point of view camera but it turned out well and gives people an idea of what to expect on those trails. We plan to head back out there when we can get away. Have a good one and thanks for watching!
How tight were the trails would there be much pinstriping on a power wagon?
There wasn’t one situation where I was anywhere close to brush/limbs on those trails in the video. The tightest spots I experienced would have been the three hundred feet or so to the actual campsite I stayed at but I don’t think you would have a problem at all there either. The campsite isn’t off of a 4x4 trail btw. That said, trail/two track conditions can change some. You could give Merus a call for the latest information. I think that would be a good idea.👍🏼
Nice video. ZF recommend getting to 30C temp first; hold engine speed at 2,000 rpm in Park for 30 seconds to fill the torque converter; check temp again; go thru P, R, D, D1, D2 for 10 seconds each; check temp again; then do the fill as long as below 50C. Hope this helps someone.
Thanks! I followed the procedure on Alldata. Start “below” 86° F, go through the gears for 5 secs each, fill between 86°F & 122°F. Having done this procedure twice, I get the same results…an initial fill, top off, then recheck at the specified temps. All good with the same outcome both times with the fluid seeping out of the fill hole in that temp range upon check and the same after driving 66 miles for the day.
Was there a specific volume of how many quarts that should be used in all data? Or just stick with the drip method? Thanks for the tutorial. Will save big bucks compared to the dealer@@odysseyusa
Just double checked. No quantity given in Alldata. General consensus for a filter and pan fluid change is just over 5 quarts.
How many quarts of fluid should be purchased? That stuff is expensive, so don't want to buy too much.
There’s a direct link in the description, 6 qts on Amazon for 91.25 right now. Best price you will find after I searched for weeks. That transmission is around 6-7k part cost alone and something like the Valvoline multi vehicle transmission fluid that is popular IS the wrong viscosity for this transmission. I found a graph of several brands showing that. The Mopar/ZF brand is the thinnest fluid out there.
@@odysseyusa Thanks, did you end up using most of the 6 quarts?
You’re welcome. I ended up using over 5 quarts, maybe as much as 5 1/2.
Cool looking place.
It is. I’m hoping to try to get back out there next year but I’m not sure what the calendar looks like, etc.
Excellent video and great time lapse! I can’t wait to get out there.
Thanks! You could stay out there a week and still be able to come back to do more later.
I have this same transmission in my Grand Cherokee. I also bought the lifetime/unlimited mileage (yep you could get that in 2015) Mopar Warranty. The old mechanic in me knows I should be changing that fluid according to at least ZF's recommendations, but asking several dealers and the warranty place, I kept getting told I had to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for fluid changes or the warranty might be voided should the transmission fails. Of course that recommendation is lifetime fluid, don't change it. I finally decided it's on them if it fails and so be it. I'm now at 200k on original fluid. I've run the hell out of this thing. I've checked the level twice and both times it was still clearish green. Still don't feel good about not changing it, but there are the results I've had anyway. Too many more miles and I'll be at the point the cost of a replacement transmission will exceed the value of the vehicle and the Mopar warranty won't cover it anyway, so I might go ahead and change it soon anyway. BTW no issues at all so far with the transmission on that original fluid other than my nerves.
We had the lifetime on our 15 Grand Cherokee as well. We ended up getting something bigger. If I’d planned to keep it until the wheels fell off, I’d of changed it and there’s no way they could’ve been able to tell. There’s no paint marks, tamper deterrent at all. I’d also not of wanted the hassle of being without my vehicle for to preventative maintenance which ZF themselves recommends under normal, not heavy duty, service. I do understand why you haven’t though. It was a great warranty.
@@odysseyusa Yeah it's too bad you can't get that specific warranty any more, although I never had to use it yet. I've been saving it for something major. I still have the GC and just bought a 2024 Gladiator, so I doubt I'll drive the GC a whole lot any more. Great quick video on how to change the fluid BTW.
The Gladiator will be a lot of fun and thanks! Happy to help.
Thank you so much 🙏 I will share this video on social media to get you more subscribers
The more the merrier! Thanks!
Pro Tip... Leave your AC off while the engine is running as you're topping off so that the condensate water doesn't run down the transmission and look like a leak, causing minor panic before you realize that it's just water and that you're an idiot. :)
😆
Nice informative vid. Thanks man
No problem 👍
thanks for the video. I'll save it for when I make the change. I'm currently on 45,000 miles. .
Happy to help!
Hey it doesn't hurt to do it at 45,000 miles, I'm thinking of doing mine at 30,000 miles
It can only help!
@@dawood2u Too Early unless your towing heavy loads A LOT. Recommended change interval is 60K but it's your Benjamin's flying away. Do what thou wilt.
Great video, comprehensive, easy to follow and concise. 4x4 Mechanic shop quoted me $525.00 to do this. And the Jeep Dealer said it “is a sealed system and the oil can’t be changed”. Ha ha yeah right.
Yeah lol, that’s highway robbery for this afternoon job with simple tools. I’m surprised the dealer seemed to not want to do it. That’s odd. I’m glad it was helpful and saved you some cash! Thanks for the support👍🏼
What cup number to remove the spark plug
Socket? It’s a 5/8” spark plug socket. You will need a dedicated spark plug socket that is either magnetic or has a rubber gripper inside the socket to hold the spark plug in the socket to get it out and keep it from falling into the spark plug tube, disturbing the spark plug grond strap/spark plug gap.
Amazing. I have always been worried about this whole concept of Lifetime transmission oil. I don't believe it, nor do I think it actaully works on the long term. I live in a country where the summer temperatures range between 120-130F.
Thank you! I’m glad it was helpful to you. I think they use it as more of a selling point trying to minimize the perception of maintenance needed. If you want the best service life, I’d follow ZF transmission’s recommended service interval of 60,000 miles. Also, given that motor oil degrades just sitting on the shelf (check out The Motor Oil Geek for a video on that and the myth you can shake an oil bottle to mix it back up) I don’t think I’d let it go without a service over 60k miles or 3(?) years. Thanks for watching👍🏼
I made my own afew year's ago had some 3/16 aluminum plate laying around and bought some longer screws painted everything black cost me about 10 bucks now i own a jl i know they have the same issue so ill build somemore looks like that part is over 100 buck's maybe i should build some and make money lol BTW gr8 video u did a nice job on it!!
Right on with the entrepreneurial spirit! Yeah, those visors have skyrocketed in price. Thanks for the compliment!
Camped at Doris many times. Now I own a place in Medicine Park. Love it. 😊
A local! It was a really nice place to visit and start the night. Super quiet too. I’m glad I stopped on my way to MERUS Adventure Park, SE of Amarillo,TX. I never thought I’d see cotton fields growing in SW Oklahoma. 😁
Great video thanks sir, I have the 2.0 4 cylinder so this helped a bunch. Much easier than the 6 cylinder I see.
You’re welcome. Happy to help! I’m about to do plugs on a ‘21 3.6 so that’s going to be a learning experience.
July 2024- I just want to take a second to point out the video was recorded almost 3 years ago when the price of the visor was $20 and $12 shipping for the passenger side visor. I scoured the internet to find that price and was happy to find it for that low price at allmoparparts. The driver side with the garage door controls was significantly higher. Now, that same visor part number has increased to $126 through the same vendor! Wow! Anyway, I just want to give people a heads up on this. Thanks for your support and have a good one.
It’s a beautiful area. I always enjoy traveling in my jeep there. I need to finish the OAT in southwestern Oklahoma soon.
It is and Doris Campground was really nice too. I’m not sure how much he’s done but my cousin has been doing sections of the OAT.
An outstanding tutorial. It’s clear and simple. Thanks.
Thanks for the great feedback!
it is more than 20 dollars for the visor like 110-160 depending on where u get it
Inflation. I’ve heard it’s went up….A LOT! Crazy. I paid that low price almost 3 years ago now. Even then, the driver side with the garage door controls was significantly more making the passenger side feel like a steal of a price. I went ahead & pinned a post letting viewers know. At least the information on the visor replacement procedure and the addition of the TACCOM clips is still useful.
