Taking on a hilly trail race 13 DAYS after Boston Marathon UK
Solid advice there, Nick. I've been practicing wearing my kit a lot. On the sofa, at the dining table, even in bed. I think I have the hang of it now 😅
Ha, love it. Practice makes perfect after all 😬
Quite a timely video for me as I'm trying to do more, slower easier runs this year, building up to my first 20 mile race in March. Also good to see a bit of Letchworth as I grew up there!
Ah good stuff James - I’ve been ‘threatening’ to do it for months so finally hit record! Ah that’s exciting about the 20 miler - what one are you doing? Will that be the longest race you’ve done? Good luck with the training - easy running has been such a game changer for me 😊 PS You get to see a lot of Letchworth on my videos… well by a lot I mostly mean the Greenway 😬
@NRG_Runs it's the Twin Lakes in Milton Keynes, yes it will be the longest race I've done, moving up from half marathons so a fair jump for me
@ Ah nice! I think I did a 20-miler in MK many, many years ago during training for one of my first marathons - but actually training for 20 miles itself first sounds like a much better idea! Some of my most enjoyable races have been 20 miles - it’s obviously a big distance, but I find so much less can go wrong than when doing a full marathon. I think generally people’s bodies can handle it a bit better. Good luck for the race - I’m potentially going to be doing 20 miles that day as well (Hillingdon 20) 😊
Still looked a great route regardless, well done mate 😎😎
Yeah it was to be fair - and going to be rapid when it’s all road! Cheers, much appreciated 😊
Great run pitty about the camera well done 👍
@@ThomasGroves-so3px I know 😭😭😭 Really not sure what happened there… more testing required! Cheers Thomas, much appreciated 😊
Brilliant running 🙌🙌🙌🙌
@@gregrunsultras Thanks Greg 😊
Love my Verity Sense, HR readings are now much more stable and consistent. I also don’t like to use pace… Mainly because there is hills everywhere around where I live. Anyway, great channel, Subscribed!
@@TirnanHealy Good to hear - glad I’m not the only one that thinks so 😅 Yeah I didn’t truly understand the impact of hills on effort (and therefore HR) until I started monitoring it. Whereabouts are you based? Ah thank you, very kind and much appreciated! ❤️
Great work out there mate, that sprint was insane
Ha, cheers! Still haven’t actually caught up with anyone before the line since getting the Insta camera… cursed? 😂
@ 🤫😂 it'll happen, next video i'm expecting it 😉
@@raleyadventures We shall see…
Great to see some clips of Letchworth parkrun! Another Jackmans parkrunner!
@@johnlbirch Thanks John 😊 And yes you get to see a lot of the Greenway in my training videos 😅 Hopefully see you out and about at parkrun or Jackmans area 😬
Great video, it just reminded me how horrible that last mile was! 👍
@@jamessleat8651 Thanks James! And sorry about that 😂 See you there in 2025, then?! 😬
@NRG_Runs maybe, if I can get a pass from the wife, it's always tricky around Xmas time!
Can't beat heart rate training for the benefits - I've massively improved my times over the years when following it - good video summarising all the benefits! 👍 (And thanks for capturing me and Iona at parkrun!)
@@gregrunsultras Yep, it’s been an absolute game changer for me! Cheers Greg, and good to see you 😊
I've never thought of wearing my watch over my sleeve if I'm using a heart rate monitor. A handy trick to know! 👍
@@markg99 Terrible camera work, but at least you get the idea! Glad it was of some use 😄
I started zone 2 running but quickly switched from watched to chest strap. Definitely beneficial doing Zone 2 running. Currently back after chest infection and all my runs as I build up are based on HR. Good luck and another good video. Cheers
@@robinwells8817 Thanks Robin 😊 How do you find the chest strap? Hope you’re recovering OK - chest infections can be nasty 😕
Chest Strap is much more accurate than the watch but agree with your comments about comfort when running. 👍
FYI the Strider was Peter Moye. Did the Buntingford 10 in 2017 and absolutely hated it. Still came back for more punishment in 2019 and ended up getting 2nd in my age category. Enjoyed that second race more. Brilliant effort on the run in Nick. Great time too.
@@Tonyr2 Ah good to know, thanks Tony. He kicked on during the downhill and finished about 10 seconds ahead of me (gun time) in the end. Yeah it’s a tricky course, but I think it can be quite rewarding if you judge right. Sounds like it’s about time you returned - Buntingford 2025 on the radar?
Maybe Nick see how 2025 goes. Staying injury free is the main issue @@NRG_Runs
@ Yep, I hear you! Fingers crossed 🤞🏼
Well done. I've just looked at that last mile on Strava. No wonder I lost 50 seconds there!
Thanks Tim, and you too! Yeah it’s a tough finish - nothing super steep, but a gradual incline most of the way… but that’s also why the second mile is a fast one! Both years I’ve run it I’ve been able to save a bit fortunately, but easier said than done!
Well done on beating your predicted time , good luck for 2025
@@ThomasGroves-so3px Thanks Thomas, much appreciated! Same to you too - do you any running goals you’re aiming for?
That start looked crazy. Pavements, Road Road. Pavements. Excellent pacing
Ha, it was a bit… couldn’t decide what was best 😅 And thanks, was pleased with it!
Really great running Nick and what a finish there and I liked the way you pep talked the race through and made it into a very exiting race....congrates with your last race in 2024 and the great result..inga dk.
Thank you Inga, and glad you enjoyed it! Always nice to be able to look back at these as well 😊
Great running buddy and great to meet you at the finish line 👍🏼
@@PoetWithPace Thanks Donato - and you too 😊
@@NRG_Runs super!
Nicely run mate. The format looks good to me 👍
@@markg99 Cheers Mark! Bet you can’t wait to be racing again! And any news on joining that running club? 😬
@NRG_Runs I'm just getting ready to go to the race. Will hopefully speak to some club members today 👍
@ Bit late to say good luck (but good luck), hope it went well! And great stuff - always a bit scary, but you won’t regret it!
Ah, nice to relive the race. I was there in the masters championships. Very well organised and enjoyable event.
@@josephgonzalez_ Glad you enjoyed it 😊 Ah nice. Did you have far to travel? I believe it’s the second year running the masters championships has been held at Buntingford - selfishly I’d say long may that continue 😅
@ from Surbiton, on the Greater London / Surrey border. About 1.5 hour drive with the lighter holiday traffic. I’d be happy to go back next year 👍
@@josephgonzalez_ Bit of a trek, but not too bad in the grand scheme of things! I do wonder whether they mix it up every couple of years so it’s in different parts of the country, but we shall see! How did you get on?
@@NRG_Runs yes they typically do hold it at different events each year. Buntingford isn’t far in comparison to where it might have been. I won gold in the M55 age group, so I’m the British M55 Champion 🙂
@@josephgonzalez_Yep, true. Amazing! Huge congrats 👏🏼 🎉🏆
Great run to finish the year. Julian Berry was marshalling with me at 4.5 miles (as you turn left after the hill) Best wishes for 2025 and Sub 3 💪👍
@@robinwells8817 Thanks Robin! Ah, that’s the one! Thanks for your support on the day and all the best to you as well 😊
A great result Nick 👏
@@SimonSypula Thanks Simon 😊
What do people think of the format? Mixing old style (short clips to camera during the race) with new (point of view with stats)? Would love some feedback if possible 😊
It works well. The disadvantage of pure PoV is you don't get to see the person making the Vlog. So a good mix.
@@tworunningbrooms Thanks, appreciate the feedback - and was my thoughts exactly! Harder to speak to camera over shorter distances, but 10 miles works for sure 😊
Another great video Nick glad it went well
@@iandevlin8282 Thanks Ian! Well done on your run too 👏🏼👏🏼
@NRG_Runs like the mix of shots. It works well. The POV camera while your running makes me re live my own race which I really like. The build up and post run analysis showing you on camera afterwards is a good balance. Keep up the good work
@@iandevlin8282 Thanks Ian, that’s really good to hear - and my intention as I said to you at parkrun earlier 😄
Brilliant running and another great video (thanks for the shout out). 👍
@@gregrunsultras Thanks Greg - and it was my pleasure! Same to you too 😊
Another great video 😊
@@petersibbett791 Thanks Peter, and also for being my draft excluder in the first mile 😬
That's why there were no Creme Egg celebrations left when I finished the Santa Canta 👀 Good week of training there 👌👍
@@gregrunsultras Ha, I was very precise in my selection… soz 👀 Cheers - it’s all heading in the right direction for sure 😊
Get the miles in 60-80 miles a week. Build up long Sunday run to 2-2.5 hrs. Try and get 13-15 on a Wednesday. Don’t forget speed work, mile Reps on a Tuesday, 400 metre reps on a Thursday. Short fast run Monday, easy short run Friday. Race Saturday. Try and get at least one 20 mile race in before marathon.
@@OldhamSteve52 Thanks Steve - the most miles I’ve averaged a week over a 4-week period is 55, so hoping to make that my base (limiting injury risk as I’ve done it before) and peak at around 65. Obviously different things will work for different people, but that sounds like a lot of speed work for me. I’m looking at one interval session a week, and one of or both a medium long tempo run and a long run with some faster miles in it. Funnily enough my last coach was quite against 20-mile races as she found for many she coached it was detrimental to the marathon itself (effectively running your peak performance in the 20 miler rather than the marathon) - but again each to their own. I felt amazing after doing sub-3 pace at a 20-mile race in March last year, but then crumbled in the last few miles in a marathon the following month… although that was probably down to my lack of marathon-specific training! Do you have any running goals for 2025?
Good idea doing the easy runs by time 👍 and it must be amazing, having your own personal trainer on hand 😊
@@markg99 Yeah I don’t think I explained it very well in the video, but I made the change a couple of years ago as there was a tendency to go faster when going by miles/kilometres to get it done, but 30 mins is exactly that! And yeah, I’m a lucky guy 😅
I was there that day and it certainly was tough conditions! Not just the last 3/4mile, but windy stretches throughout. It's good to see another runner's video this far on to remind myself it was that tough, rather than me just underdoing it 🙂Keep up the vids, was looking at the St Albans one and found your other ones.
@iangutteridge6232 It certainly was - and yes sometimes we think we’re the only ones struggling when in truth that’s very much not the case! Thanks Ian - trying to stick to one a week… so will be recording at Buntingford 10 tomorrow! Are you doing that one or Hatfield 10k in a few weeks?
@nrg_runs will look out for that vid. Am in a 3 way debate hatfield 10k v stubbington green 10k v some mad Oxfordshire 5k down 5k up 10k all on the same date... stubb green the least likely as its sold out and places are a free for all on random fb groups!
@ Well I may or may not see you there 😬 If you opt for Hatfield you can get 15% off using my code NickGill_15 (or any ATW event) 👍🏼
I was going to ask about shoes, but I see you've answered that 👍 Excellent video and commentary, Nick. Well done mate 👏💪🏃♂️
@@markg99 Cheers Mark! Yeah I’m an Inov8 fan - I have Talons, Roclites and more recently Parkclaw for some road to trail running! How about you? 😬
@@NRG_Runs I have some Mudclaws but haven't tried any others yet. They're great in mud and bearable on harder surfaces as long as I don't go too far 👍
I ran the race last week. Love the course. Tougher than it looks especially lap 3 if you get pacing wrong 😂 great weather as well. Well done FVS and great video as usual 👏👍
@@robinwells8817 Well done Robin, how did you get on? Great that you love the course as it’s perhaps a little less interesting than some others - agree tougher than it looks, but feels about ‘right’ in terms of brutality 😅
@nrg_runs first run back after seasonal cold so happy to get round. 😊
What footwear did you use?
@@anthonyhorsnall1516 I was in Inov8 Talons - not quite as gnarly as MudClaws, but good grip for sure! I did a cross country video in November time last year where I talked about the trail shoes I have, in case of interest 😊
Can't beat a bit of XC (well, except when you're actually doing it!) Great running. Catch you in some fancy dress at Santa Canta and then more seriously at Bunty 10 👍
@@gregrunsultras Ha, love this Greg. It’s great before, and after - just not at the time 😂 See you there - currently debating whether to wear a Christmas jumper as I don’t have a festive-themed top! Bad idea?
@@NRG_Runs Its freezing out there - I'd see if you can locate a Christmas coat! 🥶🤣
@@gregrunsultras Ha. Needless to say I got hot in the jumper 😅
Exciting year ahead - looking forward to following along. Hope Georgie recovers fast 👍
@@gregrunsultras Thanks Greg, appreciate the support! Georgie jogged our 5-mile cross country race in Stevenage yesterday and is in less pain today then she has been, so hopefully positive signs 😊
Excellent update mate. Onwards and upwards! You can tackle this year with an older and even wiser head than last time 😊👍 Hopefully Georgie gets over her hip trouble asap.
@@markg99 Thanks Mark, very kind as always. Yes that’s the plan… don’t get greedy 😅 And thank you, she made it out for cross country today so that’s a positive sign 😊 (even if not pain free)
Good work and a great plan for 2025. See you at Buntingford 👍
@@robinwells8817 Thanks Robin! See you there, looking forward to it 😊
Cheers Timothy! Ah nice, when is Inverness? I do love a half, I have to say 😬 Yeah Cambridge is super popular, sells out almost instantly! And yeah just can’t rush/force a sub-3 - it will happen when it happens… and it is just a silly arbitrary time goal after all 😂 Look forward to the vids 😊
Inverness is the 9th March 👀 so hopefully be nice and cool. Opposite to running Edinburgh marathon In late May 🥵😆 Exactly it is just a number and sub3 is the best sounding number after sub4 🤭 after a bit of experimenting with fueling and what HR to run at. For me to potentially hold that effort for the full marathon(HR will obv climb towards the last 10k) I am really excited to give it another go.
@ Oh cool (in both senses!) - that’s the same day as Cambridge! And yeah sometimes we can forget what a big impact temperature/the weather can have! Yeah it’s all part of the fun - goals can keep you motivated at the end of the day. Bring on 2025 I say 😄
Good work on the come back mate! I've decided to target a half marathon again in the Inverness half and then I might do Edinburgh off the back of that fitness and I'm not going for sub3 in the next few marathons I just want to chip away at the PB and learn the distance more. So more vids from me hopefully too 😆 good luck in Cambridge, I looked at that one but I think it was sold out 🥺
Its amazing the stabilisation. I caught it once with my finger and ruined one of my videos. Im so paranoid about it now 😂😂. Good luck for 2025 💪
It really is! That’s going to be me for the rest of time now 😂 Cheers Stu, and you!
Sarah Roberts also holds the world record for 10k in her age group. Done at the Standalone 10k in October 2024
Yes I was at that race too! Although didn’t hear about it until later. Amazing stuff 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
That's me and the missus at mile 3 from Dacorum (green and purple kit) 😊, pacing her round to a course PB
@@triBenjamin Ah nice, congrats to your partner on the PB! (I did think you might be pacing so thought I would latch on 😅). Thanks for pulling me along… until I died in the headwind 😂 Also just done a quick UA-cam stalk (👀) - did you end up running Yorkshire Marathon in 2022? I had a 10k trail race around Wendover Woods today, in another storm. I think that’s me done for the year. And until the storms stop at least!
@@CraigRowand That sounds brutal! Hope it went OK 🤞🏼
Oh dear 😅 Trying to keep track of when the camera is recording and when it isn't, it's the bane of our lives sometimes! I have the gopro set to make loud beeping noise when it's starts or stops. @@SwimBikeRunStu Cheers Stu! Ha, plenty people do the 5, but what’s one more lap between friends, eh? 😬 Incredible amount of admin though - Paul from our club calculates it all on an Excel spreadsheet 😅
This is sounding good mate. A sub 20 5k already, and then this. Keep it up 👍🏃♂️
@@markg99 Thanks Mark! Yeah I guess all that cross training was worth it 😅 Hope you’re doing OK - coming back from injury is always such a tricky period
