Egg Box Tiger
I’ve spent many years taking simple everyday forms and transforming them, often into simple models that children can make, and sometimes into more complex sculptures. I love how a simple egg box comes with all of the shapes you need, you just have to discover what goes where, it’s creative and inventive, but it’s also like a puzzle, and for me, that holds my attention. This tiger is made entirely from just two cartons, if you look closely you can see the very subtle difference in their colour, which I like. I had photos of tigers as reference, but as is often the case, I started to get imaginative. The sculpture started to look like an old terracotta relic, an ancient god etc . . . so my brain started adding textures and adapting things. That’s when true creativity occurs, when you are involved, engrossed, but open to suggestion, and willing to follow an unexpected path. Anyway, I hope you enjoy watching it ‘evolving’! If you like my work please check out my other posts here, or come and see what I do daily on Twitter, Instagram, and Blue Sky, you’ll find me . . . just darrellwakelam. 🙂

Paper Plate Santa
Переглядів 5814 днів тому
Here’s a little ‘Paper Plate Santa’ idea that I created for a recent workshop. It uses the basic ‘pull-together mask’ idea from my book Art Shaped, and you can also use up all of the pieces of the plate, leaving less waste, what i call ‘pure making’. The only other materials you’ll need are pretty straightforward, a pencil, a pair of scissors, masking tape, PVA glue, some tissue paper, and what...
My Christmas Video 2024 (featuring Spoon Baboon)

Now, I like to provide some competition at Christmas for all those famous TV adverts, and I like to go all out, high end, big budget. So, here is my 2024 Christmas advert entitled . . . "Spoon Baboon is making friends" . . . and, to all of the people who like what I do, share, and comment on my work, thank you, and I wish you all a peaceful and happy Christmas. (* BUY THE BOOK!)
Paper Plate Reindeer

This Paper Plate Reindeer is a few years old now, but still a firm Christmas favourite! One paper plate, no waste, what I call ‘pure making’. The only other things you’ll need are a pencil, a pair of scissors, some masking tape, and some paints to add colour (or you could colour it in instead with pens, markers, or crayons) The cutting can be a bit tricky for little hands, so kids might need ad...
Halloween Monster Lanterns

I shared these little 'Halloween Monster Lanterns' online last year and they proved very popular. They are based on one of the mask-making ideas from my book 'Art Shaped', just a little smaller. They are made from just one recycled cardboard tube using a technique that I call 'pure making', where all of the material gets used up and any offcuts get incorporated back into the design. You could p...
Cardboard Flowers (in a vase)
Переглядів 2263 місяці тому
This 'one-tube' creation is based on one of the projects from my book 'Art Shaped'. It's a simple way of creating a vase of flowers which appears to be a lot more three-dimensional than it really is. The trick is to make a very simple folded base (shown at the start of the clip) which then looks like a flat table-top. I've then used a half-cylinder (half of the tube) to suggest the vase shape, ...
Cardboard Tube Whale

Here’s a whale made from just one large cardboard tube (kitchen roll) This is another ‘pure making’ project from my book Art Shaped, which you can use to make all sorts of sea creatures, whales, dolphins, sharks, and other fish. I’ve just used PVA glue and some tape to hold this together, then I’ve added colour to it by simply pasting on some tissue paper (using watered down PVA glue), and pain...
Cardboard Carousel Horse

I was asked to create a carousel horse for 'World Funfair Month' and so here's one that magically appears from a square of cardboard (and one straw). I like to create fun projects which children (and adults) will find exciting, but which are also versatile, allowing them to adapt the artwork and add their own ideas. You could easily add more detail to this design, try different colours, make mo...
Egg Box Hippo

I always thought that egg boxes looked more like hippos than crocodiles! Here's another 'transformation' for you, this one uses almost all of one egg carton, and all you need is some PVA glue and masking tape to hold things together, and a bit of paint if you want to add some colour. If you like, you can glue on a layer of tissue (I've just used toilet roll) to make the model stronger, and, if ...
Cardboard Tube T-Rex

Transforming one cardboard tube into a T-Rex. This is an idea I've used for a while now, but I decided to look back at it and apply my 'pure making' method, this means that every part of the original tube gets incorporated into the design, leaving no waste. It's completely recyclable, and the only cost is the glue which is holding it together. If you like this idea, please take a look at my man...
Cardboard Dragon

I recently did a couple of projects with school groups based on dragons, both using some basic cardboard construction techniques. So, it inspired me to try a more complex version myself. With work like this it can be simplified down to just three or four shapes, but it can be made much more elaborate and you can add as many layers and details as you wish. For each stage here I’ve glued the piec...
Cardboard Tube Houses

I love a challenge . . . and these little houses are a great way of experimenting with what I call ‘pure making’ . . . can you create a house using every part of the tube, leaving no waste? I’ve made 6 different versions here, all made intuitively, without designing them first or using photo reference, just trying different ideas, experimenting, and basically enjoying the process. All you need ...

Hiya, virtually all of my clips are edited to share on social media, and they have limits . . . 1:30 on Instagram, and 2:20 on Twitter. So, I speed up stuff that's repetitive, and edit out parts that you can work out for yourself. What I create isn't a 'perfect' result, I leave room for you to work things out, adapt, alter, add things . . . these are just a guideline to the techniques and methods that I'd use. You can always do some and then hit pause? Have fun.

That's cool. I used to make stuff like this. Paper plate for the base then cardboard and various trash (like cans and single use cups, aluminum foil) to make the form on top. Hot glue and tape to put it together. Then I would jab holes in the sides with scissors and put yarn through to hold it on my face. Nowadays I have a reusable clay I make the armature from then I layer paper mache on the top. Then I use elastic for the strap. It's a lot easier to get nuanced shapes and better structure this way, but you have to pay for the clay (I also have a lifesized mannequin head so I get the size right and don't have to buy as much clay), so I'd recommend this kind of way in the video for people who don't have any access to money, or only enough for necessities. Mask making is very fun I think more people should do it. Some other ways people do it is carving from wood, eva foam, leather, making from gourds, some people do it with clay but that's pretty heavy, crochet. I even saw someone do it with yarn, they had a weird way to put it together and make it solid. And I saw someone make one with an animal pelvis. Some people even use metal, for example traditional Japanese masks are carved from wood with metal eyes. All of these coming with their own costs. Making from paper and trash is the best budget option, paper mache is also budget and is sturdier but more time consuming. Anyways I recommend you look up these other options if you have more resources available to you and want to try a different method.

Thanks for the info, it's a fascinating subject. The work I do now is pushed by a desire to make things as accessible as I can for children, so I use the simplest, most available materials I can, and the least amount of processes. To get to that point I've made tens of thousands of masks, models and sculptures over 35 years, some of which are way more complex, time consuming and costly than what I do now. When you come back full circle, and have experienced all that, then the purity and simplicity of what you do is enriched by all of those other successes and failures. 🙂👍
