Visual Effect Graph - Tutorial #06 - Growing Hair (Intermediate / Advanced)
This tutorial showcases interaction between Unity Visual Effect Graph and Houdini in order to bake point caches and signed distance fields.

- Installing VF and pCache Exporters in Houdini

- Drive trails based on gravity, turbulence and collide them with the SDF
- Animate the hair based on the progress of every hair strip

    No need to use Houdini! Unity now has a built-in Point Cache Baker that can be used on any mesh - look it up! You could also create your own mask maps, if you know what you're doing.

    Spoiler Alert: as of 1/2022 Output Particle Lit Quad is still not available for URP.

      When i create the visual effect asset i get error and if i put asset in to the scene it doesnt play. Error: Shader error in 'Hidden/VFX/bonfire/System/Output Particle Quad': redefinition of 'PackHeightmap' at directory/Common.hlsl(1202) is this happening because im not in hdrp?

    This is a good symbol of fire. Certainly not a Bonfire though. Stack those logs higher than a man in a square frame. Is it hot enough to cook bone?

    Ok, I love this tutorial but the way I need to use this effect I want to place it on a character that is moving around. When he moves it causes the 3D noise to move and it is very obvious. It is in the correct position but the actual noise value is changed and when you are falling it stays still.

      I think I found a solution. Add a "World to Local" node, and combine it with the position attribute in a "Transform (Position)" node, and feed that to the perlin noise with added time instead. Watch out, both spaces in the "Transform (Position)" node have to be set to World, since both inputs are in world space. Hope it helps.

    Is there a way to make the fire not start at the beginning of the scene but already be at full strength at the beginning. I think they call it prewarm particles? Right now when you enter a scene all the torches lit up at once instead of already being lit up. Makes sense?

      hey! not sure why i can't get to work progress- based positon, already try it and redo with a new project like 20 times i'm sure i have the same nodes. I'm using unity 2019.4.16.
