Prelude on “Spanish Hymn” (Trio in A♭), Op. 95 | Flor Peeters (1903-1986) | By Rien
What a beautiful and cleverly composed piece! Peeters crafted his Prelude on Spanish Hymn in a Trio-style. The CF frequently switches between soprano and tenor, necessitating manual changes throughout the piece. In the final section, the composer adds a fourth voice for enhanced impact. Peeters specified a Schalmey for the CF, a Bourdon 8’ with a Principal 4 ‘ for the second voice, and a soft 16’ and 8’ for the pedal. I used this exact registration, and I genuinely enjoy it. I hope you do too!
Some background information about the hymn:
The “Spanish Hymn” is actually a traditional Spanish melody. It is often paired with the hymn text “Come, Christians, Join to Sing” (written by Christian Henry Bateman in 1843), though the melody itself dates back to an earlier time.
The origins of the “Spanish Hymn” tune are somewhat unclear, but it is believed to be based on a popular Spanish folk melody. This lively and rhythmic tune is characterized by a bright, celebratory feel, and it evokes the spirit of Spanish folk and dance music, with its syncopated rhythms and upbeat nature.
The melody was first associated with the hymn “Come, Christians, Join to Sing” when it was included in hymnals in the 19th century, though the exact date of its association with the text is not well-documented. The hymn itself calls for joy and celebration in worship, making the “Spanish Hymn” an ideal fit due to its lively character.
The “Spanish Hymn” tune is beloved for its rhythmic vitality and cheerful mood, which makes it a favorite in many Christian hymnals and worship settings. It has also been used in a variety of musical arrangements, from organ settings to brass ensembles, due to its upbeat and easily recognizable melody.
Played with the organ from the Martinikerk in Groningen, the Netherlands (Hauptwerk)

Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713): Adagio from Concerto Grosso in D major Op. 6/4
Переглядів 2092 години тому
A beautiful orchestral piece from Corelli. I played it how it would turn out on pipe organ with an all string registration, including 16' and 8' string stops for the pedals to mimic the depth from the contrabass. I was surprised how well it turned out, so I decided to record it. Which wasn't as easy as I hoped for. The notes have to be played mildly staccato, there is happening a lot in the pie...
American Nostalgia: Reverie in D | George H. Swift (19th Century) | By Rien

Isn't this a beautiful piece? A lovely find from a forgotten composer. I couldn't find anything about him. I guess he is a American who lived between 1850-1930. I played this lovely Reverie (with many accidentals) on a typical Dutch organ with a typical Dutch registration. I hope you like this piece. Recorded feb 6, 2025 in the late evening. I made the score available for my supporters and chan...

Fugue in C Major | Abraham van den Kerckhoven (1618-1702) | By Rien

A beautiful piece from Abraham van den Kerckhoven, a composer who lived in the Spanish Netherlands, a time where The Netherlands and Belgium were one country ruled by the Spanish branch of the German Habsburgs from 1556 to 1714. He worked in what we now call Flanders. I played the piece with the "golden combination" flute 8 2. The last part, in a different meter is played with a principal 8 4 r...

Today, I improvised a Tuba Tune using my new St. Mary Redcliffe sample set. The result? A piece that is uplifting, cheerful, and full of energy-just what we all need! I enjoyed it so much that I decided to write it down and give it away for free until the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Why? Because everyone needs a little joyful music to brighten up winter. And for those in the...

Over the past few weeks, I reached out to my subscribers for support in acquiring the St. Mary Redcliffe sample set for Hauptwerk-a truly stunning virtual organ. While only a handful of you contributed (and I deeply appreciate those who did! 🙏), I decided to make it happen anyway. I gathered my regular donations, the few contributions towards the set, my UA-cam earnings, and royalties from my c...
'Allein Gott in der Höh' sei Ehr' (P.10) | Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706) | By Rien

Here’s my performance of Allein Gott in der Höh’ sei Ehr’ (P.10) by Johann Pachelbel. This chorale prelude is based on the Lutheran hymn of the same name, which dates back to the early Reformation period. The hymn itself is a German paraphrase of the Latin Gloria in Excelsis Deo, traditionally sung in worship to give praise and glory to God. In this piece, Pachelbel weaves the hymn melody into ...

Very nice trio performed very well!
Lekkere scherpe contrasten in je registratie tussen de manuele. Mooi resultaat! En de melody...die herken ik niet (is ook vrij langzaam) maar dat maakt de compositie niet minder mooi
A beautifully crafted performance, Rien, with colourful registration choices on the splendid Martinikerk Organ sample set: bravo!
Gaaf stuk! dank voor het delen.
Dank Nils. Deze was goed gelukt inderdaad!
Sehr schön, fast wie ein Staccato.😊
Vielen dank!
Well done! A very attractive rendition.
Thanks! The pedals add lovely depth to this one!
such a marvellous piece so beautifully played. thank you.
Thanks!
Fabulous! Your organ performance works brilliantly in this recording and the registration choices on the Steinmeyer sample set are stunning: bravo, Rien!
Thank you Graham! I must admit that I was really satisfied with this recording!
What a lovely work. Where did you find the score? Bravo my friend.
Thanks. Search at IMSLP at the composers name. Than keyboard works. It’s a keyboard work where I’ve played the lowest note with the pedals.
Thank you my good fellow for the music recommendation. I will add this one to my repertoire! 😊
Oh and beautifully played.
Thanks! Enjoy!
I feel Corelli's baroque atmosphere is special! Thank you for the beautiful performance! Have a nice weekend! Rien 😍😍😍
Thank you Clara! And thanks again for your stunning performance of my Winter's Embrace!
Fabulous - bravo Rien!
Thanks! Sometimes an orchestral pieces turns out to be pretty nice on the organ. This, sure is one of them! This is a great sample set for stringy pieces. Because the sounds develops rather slowly, it sounds very natural!
Beautiful pieces and beautifully played with wonderful registrations!!!
Thank you so much! Lovely sweet sounds in this instrument!
Famous piece that always has an effect on the organ too. Nice performance.
Thank you Alberto! Italian orchestral music from the baroque era goes well on the organ indeed! Even Bach knew this already!
Corelli was Vivaldi's professor thus the styles revolutionizing the best of Baroque music and Bach arranged some of his works for the violin to organ and it is just as fitting and even sounded more beautifully on the organ. Thanks for playing this
Thank you!
Lovely Rien. Love Corelli.
Thanks Bram!
I like Corelli's music. Something special in it
Thanks! This one worked out pretty well on this slow…. Sample set. Because the tones develop slowly, it sounds pretty convincing.
@@RienSchalkwijkyes Landau is a kind of slow horse sometimes 😊
There is an opportunity to improvise a Phrygian cadence at the end.
Well… learn me how to do it! (I see a new tutorial opportunity!) 😊
@ I can’t learn you… you have to learn yourself. But I can teach you.
Well -- that worked out very nicely! Always a fan of Corelli. That would work just fine on a pipe organ with a good acoustic. So here (hear ...) we have a huge digital acoustic and strings -- but I'm not experiencing the jarring I often experience with that combination largely because: 1) it's played mostly in a lower register -- which provides more foundational pitch and less higher overtones, and 2) because the notes are detached which allows the overtones to decay and clear somewhat from one another as opposed to colliding. Nicely played -- 🙂
Thanks! Agree with the reverb. It played with my paying style. I wanted to make use of the reverb without hurting the harmonies.
Een heerlijk goedemorgen, Rien! Sounds really orchestralic😀😀! Great! Which arrangement did you use?
Gute morgen! I used a arrangement for klavier where I replaced the lowest note for the pedals with a 16/8 string registration. In the harmonic range the 16’ adds the effect of a contrabas. I like the extra depth.
Gute Nacht Rien. 😊
Gute nacht!
Prachtig! Uit welk muziekbladen komt dit stuk? Muzikale groet, Marja.
Dank!

It’s now 350 later and humankind still creates beautiful music while at the same time destroys innocent people everywhere on the planet…
Sehr schön vorgetragen Rien, ich wünsche euch ein schönes Wochenende. Liebe Grüße. Gerd 👏
Danke! Morgen ein schönes Adagio von Corelli! Schönes Wochenende!
Schöne Aufnahme Rien.
Danke Gerd.ein schönes orgeln.
Great piece!
Thanks Ralph! Nice harmonies!
It was musically a very romantic time for the organ!!! I love all the music books from that time and also this recording of yours.
Thank you so much! We share the love for music that is coming from the heart!
A piece filled with gracious charm and beautifully played by you with your 'Dutch registration: bravo, Rien! (I looked but also could not find out anything about this long forgotten composer, other than a 'March in C' of his played at a recital in America and a choral anthem advertised in the 'Musical Times' of 1881! Good that you have brought him back from the dead!)
Thanks Graham! We share the love for this kind of music. I will admit that I searched extensively for more information about this composer because I could not understand that there was nothing left at all. With most European organist/composers there is usually some reference data from church archives etc. But churches in America often (literally and figuratively) have a shorter lifespan, so a piece of memory "disappears" continuously.... Nevertheless, if there is a heaven, I hope the composer has heard it!
The beautiful and romantic melody and harmony are impressive~ I will also upload one of your romantic works tomorrow^^ Have a nice day! ❄️❄️❄️😍😍😍
Thank you! I’m looking forward to your performance!
Dat is een mooie combinatie met deze registratie. Op wel orgel zat je virtueel te spelen?
Den Haag! Mooie warme sound.
@@RienSchalkwijk Aha (is ook een goed "merk" orgel) 🙂
A beautiful verset in simple ternary form ❤
Thanks Vidas!
It's a beautiful melancholic piece ! Bravo Rien ! Nice performance !
Thank you Remi!
Quite lovely -- composition and performance! The harmonization reminds me of French Impressionism -- Debussy, Ravel ...
Thanks! There are nice subtitle differences in these 3 pieces!
A very lovely start to my Friday morning with 3 beautiful pieces.
Thanks! I hope it will be a bit less hot today for you!
Interessante Harmonien. 😊

These three reflective compositions by JMS sound truly gorgeous with your registration choices on the fabulous H&H Organ sample set from SMR in your wonderfully sensitive performance: bravo, Rien!
Thank you Graham! This organ can roar but also has some beautiful quiet stops.
Interesting composition, very expressive performance.
Thank you Alberto
Thanks for playing, Rien! All three are very peaceful, meditative, beautifully performed and the stops sound perfect. Have a great week, James
