Beat the winter blues with some brilliant plants!
There's still plenty of plants to buy in your local garden centre and it is a particularly good time of year to plant trees, shrubs, roses and climbers. In this video I take you on a tour of my local garden centre and show you all the lovely plants they have on offer. You can find some good sized, mature plants at the moment, which will add instant impact to your garden.
There's lots of plants to enjoy in the winter. Evergreens are particularly important at this time of year and will really stand out in your garden while other plants are dying back or losing their leaves. Plant Sarcococca confusa in a pot and place it by your front door - its highly fragrant winter flowers will really lift your spirits!
Now is a great time to plant because there's plenty of moisture in the soil and it's not too cold so plants will establish well. Don't plant if it's frosty or frost is forecast.

November is a great time to plant trees and shrubs!

You’ll find plenty of trees and shrubs in your local garden centre and now is a great time to plant them because there’s lots of moisture in the soil and it’s not yet cold. Don’t plant if it’s frosty or frost is forecast. When planting trees and shrubs dig a nice deep, wide hole and incorporate some manure and bonemeal in the bottom so they establish well. Use a stake and tree band when plantin...

In this video I talk about some of my favourite climbers and how to plant them. Now is a good time to plant climbers and you may find some quite mature climbers in your local garden centre at the moment which will give instant impact. Don't plant if it's frosty or frost is forecast. Climbers like a deep root run and good soil. Dig a deep hole and incorporate some manure in the bottom. Put wires...
November is the ideal time to plant roses

Now is a great time to plant roses because there's plenty of moisture in the soil and the soil still has some warmth, so they will establish well. Don't plant if it is frosty or frost is forecast. One of my favourite roses is 'Gertrude Jekyll', named after the famous garden designer. It's a medium sized (1.2 metres by 1 metre height and spread} shrub rose with a lovely, bright pink double bloom...

I'm really enjoying my winter hanging basket that I planted up for this video. I've never had a winter hanging basket before and it's giving me much winter cheer! Enjoy your winter hanging basket too! The plants I have used in this hanging basket are a mini conifer, red cyclamen and trailing variegated ivy. A festive red and green theme. Happy planting!
Get Your Christmas Pots Ready Now!
Переглядів 36214 днів тому
Plant up a pot with some festive, seasonal plants for Christmas. Do it now while the plants are still available in your local garden centres. Don't wait until Christmas as there will be little to choose from apart from Christmas trees. Include plenty of evergreens in your Christmas pot for a strong display which will look good all through the winter months. I have used only evergreen shrubs in ...

Don't be put off by shade! I love shady borders as much as I love sunny borders. There are lots of fabulous plants you can plant in shade. This video shows you how to plan and plant up a lovely shady border that will give you all year round beauty and joy. Create a cool, lush retreat in a shady area of your garden by watching my video! Add some lovely winter colour to your garden with beautiful heathers
Переглядів 81021 день тому
Heathers pack a punch on colour! Most heathers like a light, well drained, acid soil. Some heathers, such as Erica carnea, will be OK in neutral to slightly alkaline soil and a slightly heavier soil. All heathers are best in a sunny position. The heather featured in my video is Erica gracilis. It likes acid soil so use ericaceous compost when planting it in a pot. It flowers for a long time fro...
Plant tulip bulbs now for fabulous late spring colour!
Переглядів 35728 днів тому
There is nothing like tulips! They add so much glamour and elegance to a garden. There are so many varieties of tulips to choose from. They vary in colour, height, flower form and flowering time. Have fun choosing your tulips! In this video I have partnered a very dark purple tulip called 'Paul Scherer' with a hot pink tulip called 'Double You' because I love that colour combination. They are t...

Here is my selection of plants for my late autumn and winter pots. It's a mainly red and green theme which will look really festive around Christmas time. All the plants are winter hardy except the cyclamen which will be killed off by frosty weather. Cheers!
Add gorgeous elegance to your garden with alliums!
Переглядів 573Місяць тому
I love Allium hollandicum 'Purple Sensation' which is the ornamental allium I talk about in this video. I use it a lot in borders, threading it through other plants to punctuate the planting. They flower beautifully in early summer and look good too when they form seedheads. I think alliums like a good, fertile soil which is moist but well drained. They are best in full sun but I have seen Alli...
How to achieve three seasons of interest in a window box
Переглядів 322Місяць тому
In this window box I have underplanted autumn and winter plants with spring bulbs for three seasons of beauty. I have used Narcissus 'Tete-a-tete' which is a brilliant dwarf daffodil that I love to use in pots and window boxes. It flowers early spring. I have also planted Skimmia japonica 'Double Diamond' in this window box along with red cyclamen and trailing variegated ivy. All these plants w...
Now is the ideal time to plant up a border

In this video I am in my own garden, developing my border. Most of the plants have worked but some haven't and I want to take them out and add some new plants more suitable for the growing conditions. Autumn is a great time to plant because there is lots of moisture in the soil and still some warmth so plants establish well. It's also a great time to improve your soil with a good quality compos...
Add beauty now to your garden with Panicum virgatum
Переглядів 264Місяць тому
Ornamental grasses look great in autumn and there are plenty to choose from now in the garden centres. They look beautiful when they catch the low autumn/winter light and add movement and soft texture to a border. Now is a great time to plant them as there is plenty of moisture in the soil. Grow one in a pot if you don't have space in your border. I particularly like Panicum virgatum with its p...
Ornamental grasses are particularly fab in autumn!

Miscanthus sinensis is a wonderful ornamental grass. It gets to about 2m in height and 1.2m in spread with lovely feathery, tassely plumes. 'Kleine Silberspinne' is a shorter, more compact variety of Miscanthus sinensis, which gets to about 1.2m in height and 1m in spread. It's perfect for this front garden and makes a real statement especially in late summer and autumn. Miscanthus sinensis is ...

Lovely planter would love to see it with the lights on
Thank you! I’ll put the lights on it in a video soon.
All our salvias, hardy and tender, are still flowering their heads off in mid-November here in Gloucester, though we are promised frosts next week, which will no doubt put an end to that.
Thanks for sharing. Salvias are fantastic! We're due some cold weather this week too but not frost yet.
Hi Kitty, new subscriber from Sydney Australia here. I love this kind of video -very informative and useful. I have just planted a Brunnera, Hosta, Heucera and Helebore for the first time -they were all half price as we are now heading towards Summer. It will be interesting to see how they cope with the hot weather here.😎
Thank you for your lovely comment and I'm glad you found my video useful. I plan to make more videos like that in the future Good luck with your plants and let me know how you get on with them.
Thank you for this video! I have a "hot lips" salvia in a pot that looks very similar to yours. I am near the coast in Southern California, USA. I have been searching for pruning guidelines on UA-cam and am so glad I found your video. Subscribed! (love your name by the way:)
Hi Laurina. Thank you for your lovely comments and I/m glad you found my pruning video useful. So glad you have subscribed!
Hi Kitty, I'm a Kitty too. This is exactly what I needed to help me plant my shady border, thank you.

Hello Kitty...
Hello!
Lovely video. Thank you...
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
My favorite plant this year are these shrubby salvias. It was so hot in Northern California, and I dont have to worry about them at all. Thanks for the tips!
Thanks so much for your comment. Glad to be of help.

Hi Kitty, I way excited to see you use the Verbena Bampton. It is one of my favourite perennial because of the growth patten. I prefer it to the rigida and the bonariensis.I made a video on it. I have mine in the ground though but now know I can put it in pot.
Thanks so much for leaving a lovely comment. I love this verbena too!
Very useful! Thanks!
Thanks so much for leaving a comment. Glad my video was useful.
Very nice garden planting!
Thank you!
Thankyou, very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
What is your soil type Kitty ?
The soil in the border in my garden is fairly poor and free draining. So when I did my border revamp in a recent video I enriched my soil with well-rotted manure and a good quality compost before planting. Hope that helps.
It looks lovely. Very festive. I’ve never had luck with cyclamen but after your advice, I’m going to try again!
Thanks for your nice comments! Good luck with your cyclamen!
Super example of window box, really enjoy your tips, all from experience, thank you.xx
Thank you for your lovely comments! Glad to be of help.
I was planning to plant up a border as well. Just found your channel and subscribed to it. I'm looking forward to watch your videos. Greetings Heidi 👩🌾🌻
That's great Heidi! Thanks so much for subscribing! Enjoy planting your border!
I love Skimmas as permanent shrubs. I have 2 males and 2 females in a shady bed.
Lovely! Thanks for sharing.
Lovely window box 👍
Thank you!
I'm in th process of making a new border and I have a phlomis that I want to move. Would now be a good time? I have geranium Patricia and she's a thug, or enthusiastic, she might elbow out your other plants, unless you've given her a strict talking to.
I think it would be fine to move your phlomis now. Do it soon while the soil is still warm and moist and before the cold weather sets in.
Thank you for this video, that has just trawled up for me so I've subscribed and I will be looking out for more informative videos. Thank yo again.
Thank you for your nice comments and for subscribing.
Thankyou. I have just bought one (Amelia Jayne) from the garden centre so now I know how and when to prune.
Great! Thanks for your comment. I'm glad to be of help.
