In 1971, the Soviet Union established a secret radar center "Звезда" ("Star" in Russian).
After the withdrawal of the Soviet Army in 1993 the town became abandoned.

До чего Путин Латвию довел: дома зоколочены, все в граффити, снег не убран, старый фонд осыпается. 😏😜 Всегда не понимал откуда наши либерасты берут думки об унылой долгой русской зиме. Зима же в России солнечная, блестящая и весёлая, хотя и долгая. Теперь знаю откуда. Ну да и бог с ними, пущай эти в ней живут, уныльцы пепломголовыпосыпайцы.

It's so creepy, there's no one, some kind of apocalypse. What is the city turning into??? 25 years ago, the courtyards here were full of children, life was in full swing and even at night it was not boring; cafes worked until morning...
It is soviet heritage which needs to get rid off.

karosta is the place you'd better avoid in the late evening and night, but it does have some pretty sights, especially the sea side
Я здесь жил с родителями в 1975 - 1976 годах. Тогда двух блочных домов ещё не было. Хорошее это было время!

Yes, it is open and free to go, only thing you need to know, in the trailer, there lives this one old man, he is totally cool, but respect that he lives in there. I totally recommend to go there, Irbene is very cool place.
