Corolla Solex carbed 4A-F is back up and running
After some overheating issues, the headgasket got replaced. After putting the cylinder head back on and putting the engine back together, she is running like a champ again and the overheating problems seem to be solved!

Dyno run of my '89 Toyota Corolla AE92 XL hatchback in stock form. It's fitted with a bone stock, 4A-F 1600cc carburated engine, which should produce 90hp and 127Nm of torque. After 34 years and 140.300 km's , without ever being touched or opened and just serviced, it produced 78 whp (which translates to exactly 90hp at the cranck) and 135Nm of torque. Not bad for the old girl!

Toyota 4A-FE engine cut-out
Переглядів 114 тис.12 років тому
Cut-out I made from a Toyota 4A-FE engine block. The engine was removed from a Toyota Corolla AE101 to be replaced by a more powerfull engine. After collecting dust for several years, the engine's owner decided to donate it to me so I could open her up. Here is a brief impression of how that process went and of course, the end result!

aint 4 barrel a bit overkill for a daily driven car? how big the venturi? 40mm?
A barrel for each cylinder seems only fair to me 😁 These are 40mm carbs with 30mm venturi's
Can this set-up support all A/C system functions?
Should be able to I guess. But I never tried or really looked into it, so can't be certain
@@Bloffan1 still have my stock 4af carb running but this solex carb is so darn sweet and awesome but its also a bit pricey here in PH, its like 7 times the cost of a whole 4af engine itself 🤣
@@JayeLeli I have no idea of pricing in PH. I made this setup to just fool around a little with the 4A-F before I am replacing it with a 4A-GE. Wanted to do it on a budget, but that never works for me. I always want to do things right and that costed me more than I had forseen. But it is a cool setup and the 4A-F can't possibly sound any better! 😁
How many OEMs Re using on agriculture?
Nice man, do you mind me asking how much the carb setup runs? Was looking to do this on mine but never found anything for itbs for a 4af
You mean much horsepower it runs? It was dyno'd to about 108 hp
@@Bloffan1 I meant the cost.
@@SweetWrapsGarage Well, believe it or not but I tried to keep it on a tight budget. I used secondhand carbs that I rebuild and I had to source the right jets and venturi's, trumpets and filters for those. I had to make the throttle linkage from scratch, and got the intake from malaysia (which is on the other side of the world for me). So that alone I'm in about €900 Euro. Which isn't all that bad considering that new Webers would have cost €600,- each, and I would have still needed to buy filters etc. Besides that I had to install the electric fuel pump and installed new wiring, fuses, relays and a cut-off switch. This isn't really necessary to make it all work, but if you want to do it right, that's the only way to go if you ask me. So all in all, I think it cost me about €1200,- or close to it.
Did you dyno it with this setup? Keen to see what power it makes
It was dyno'd in its stock form before the conversion and it was dyno'd shortly after the conversion to this setup. In stock form it made 90hp (which is exactly factory spec after all these years) and after the conversion it made about 108hp. So it gained roughly 18hp at the crank. But that doesn't say it all, as the graph's are so much nicer now. The powerband is more usable and more fun to drive.
Bro i have this engine and i have a few questions
What do you want to know?
Nice build man!! I was planning the same thing on my corolla, it’s amazing to putting it to work, but i was wondering if u still can put ac on the build?
I won't run AC, but shouldn't be to much of a problem to install AC if you've got all the parts. Idle up might be a bit tricky, but there are ways to make that work too if you really wanted too.
@@Bloffan1 within this year maybe ill put mine to work! I have the solex yet i still need to make an adapter for it, i still have my condensers and ac system so ill try that. Ill make sure to mention you whenever that happens, i just need the budget and time for it. Thanks man!!!
Hey dude you got Instagram?
Nope, sorry. Guess I'm an oldfashioned guy 😆
Well, I actually just started an car only account: dutch_toyota_projects
Does 4 carb effect your fuel consumption
It certainly does! Fuel consumption has gone up quite a bit. But that was to be expected to be honest.
Hey dude, your car is really cool ! Where did you find 4AF intake manifold for DCOE carbs ? I would love to do the same but I struggle to find parts since most of them are for the 4AGE. Also do you have links to some websites where I could find other parts for 4AF ?
Well, I kinda stumbled upon them and haven't seen one online since. There is not much support for the 4A-F for that matter apart form the regular maintenance parts. My setup is for sale, but it's not cheap tho...
Hey dude dude i need some advice 😊
What do you need dude?
My brother can you do a revving to its limits just for the sake of the video? I just want to hear those roar❤ (notice my comment❤)
it's your Solex sidedraft carbs 40 or 45?

How does your ac will work
This car has no AC, so no problems there
How does the ac will work when your using webber
The car has no AC. So it works absolutely terrible! 😂
Really curious what the impact on performance would be, or mileage haha. Awesome work this is clean af
Well, the car has been on the dyno before the conversion and after the conversion. It gained about 18hp at the crank and the whole power and torque curve are much nicer and more useable throughout the rev range. The throttle response is excellent too! Milage did go down a bit though, but that was to be expected 😆Don't have hard numbers on it yet, but I reckon it would be around 1 litre to 10 km's
@@Bloffan1 really cool to hear, this would be something I'd like to do in the future if I could get my hands on the parts but it seems pretty rare 😆
@@DesertPunks Well, believe it or not, the setup in the video is actually for sale. I've had my fun with it and a 4A-GE is going into the car in the near future.
@@Bloffan118hp gain but how much total?
@@TheNicoxoxD the car was dyno'd to 108hp at the crank with this setup. It was dyno'd at 90hp at the crank before te conversion, which is exactly on the factory specifications from 1988

intake in the BACK? ohh maaan...
This intake manifold was it specifically for a 4af or was it a 4age manifold?
This intake manifold is specifically for the 4A-F. If it would have been for the 4A-GE it would not have fitted. Different port sizes and bolt patterns for the flanges between those engines.
@@Bloffan1 damn that makes this hard. Thanks for the help I'm gonna try to find one
Haha i've never seen someone do something this silly (in a good way) to a 4a-f before. Nice one man, I can hear the induction noise
How did you do this
Bought a set of used carbs and a intake manifold for my engine, rebuild the carbs, did some research into what more was needed and just went for it 😉
why on earth did you do this? 4afs are poo

@@boyakyat8314 if at all possible, what is the manifold called? Only 4af ones I find are for blacktop itb's
Awesome build man, my uncle has a ae92 liftback with a 4af converted to LPG, and I absolutely love that car! Can you tell me more about what is needed to do the carb swap and how much power it is making?
Thanks man. I did the 'hard' carb swap going with sidedraft carbs. There are more plug and play downdraft carbs available for the 4A-F. To do the swap to the twin Solex sidedraft carbs I needed the carbs themselves of course with the right venturi's, nozzles, trumpets, etc. And the intake manifold that fits the 4A-F head and the carbs. I've put plastic spacer in between the intake manifold and the carbs, to prevent heatsoaking of the carbs. And I made my own throttle linkage, throttle cable bracket and a blanking plate for the EGR and mechanical fuel pump ports. A few coolant ports that aren't needed anymore need to be blocked off too. That is the basics of the swap. If you hook that up, it will run. For tuning and daily ease purposes I also added a electrical fuel pump, new fuel filter/fuel pressure regulator and I have made a new vacuum system. It's been on the dyno after the swap and I gained about 18hp at the crank. It went from the standard 90hp to now making 108hp. Gained a little extra torque but the best thing is the way it makes power now. The curves on the dyno grahp are way different
@@Bloffan1 Sounds like a lot of work, but it is for sure worth it in my opinion, thanks for sharing all the details!
@@bobitop2020it was a lot of work indeed. But it was fun to do, so worth it

@@Bloffan1what’s the HP on your 4A-F
It's been dyno'd to 108hp at the crank. So that's a 18hp gain over the 90hp stock
@@Bloffan1 that’s neat!
were you able to fix the overheating issue?
Nice! I got some questions if you don’t mind me asking. Planning on being the 2nd to do this to a 5sfe, but I lack some knowledge. Now there is a standalone ecu built for 3sgte mr2s/Celicas which will fit on my 5s, but the thing is I want to keep my car NA. My question is can the standalone work and be reprogrammed for NA purposes, or will I have to go Safc and not be able to get the most out of ITBs (according to the forum opinion of safc)?
Well, my car is running carbs, so no ECU of any kind is needed. You are talking about converting to ITB's (which look a bit the same with the trumpets). So not really relevant to the video you are reacting to, but to answer your question: Any standalone ECU can be programmes however you want. That's the beauty about going to a standalone management system. You just need someone to do that for you, who knows what they're doing with programming and tuning.
Where did you get the manifold for that? And did you have to remove power steering?
There was no power steering to begin with, so didn't need to remove anything. I found the manifold online, somewhere in Malaysia I believe. Haven't seen one since, so I guess I got lucky.
@@Bloffan1 damn right u got lucky... No power steering wtf
@Aaa-zf1wy power steering is overrated. More fun to drive without, unless you're parking 😆

Hi, could anybody tell me the diameter of the gears in the C52 gearbox? I'm a mechanical engineering student, and I need this information for a project. Also, can I just verify what material the shafts are made from? Thanks so much for your time, and this great video!
Even just the diameter of one of them, and with the gear ratios I'll be able to calculate the rest thanks!
This is best 1.6 petrol engine ever made.
Needs something like a pancake motor hidden inside the block that turns the engine over slowly. Still rather have a 4A-FE than any Under-Engineered American Rubbish ever!

can i get the report of this project??
Nagen Dran, report of the project? What exactly do you want to know, as there is no real report on this project.
I have a 7afe, we opened the engine for first time at 408000 km, and we changed the timing belt for first time at 320000 km and it wasn't because it broke apart
