Konica Hexanon AR 28mm f1.8 "Type-UC" Servicing (CLA)
Servicing Information and inquires: www.areiamedia.com
Today I’ll be servicing a Konica Hexanon AR 28mm f/1.8 “UC-Type” lens. This lens has a very stiff iris and focus ring, oily and sticky iris blades and some haze in the front group. I’ll be fully disassembling the lens to clean it up, re-grease the focusing helicoid, clean the iris blades and remove any dust and marks from the optics.

      Can easily be adapted to MFT (with 2x crop factor, so ~56mm equivalent) or to full-frame mirrorless (Sony, Canon RF, etc.) at the full field of view (28mm). I use it on a Sony A7ii. Fantastic lens.

    looking forward for more konica hexanon videos, shuch underrated gems from today has anyone de-clicked a konica hexanon lens?

    • @AreiaMedia
      @AreiaMedia 2 місяці тому

      I have spent many work hours on experimenting with that when I used to own a full "premium" set of these lenses. The result is that de-clicking of the Konicas is not recommended. There are two important problematic factors: 1) No matter the type or weight of grease put on the iris ring, the iris will "creep", meaning it will slowly close down. This is usually resolved on other brands by expanding the internal spring on the aperture mechanism (which requires an almost full disassembly). On Konica Hexanons though, there is no ideal expansion that allows the iris to work correctly, and also stop the iris from "creeping". In theory, perhaps completely replacing those springs or some other advanced hack could make it work, but it would be different for each lens and too much of work to make it worth it. 2) There is a separate iris locking position at the end of the iris ring and after the minimum aperture number. While the locking mechanism can be removed, it will be really awkward for the iris to be de-clicked and then move past the minimum aperture and on the locking position. This can be combated by adding a new block at the exact position of the minimum aperture, which is also a very advanced hack as it would involve drilling holes onto the lens in order to secure the new block. Adding those two factors together, it's much better to just leave the lenses clicked.

      @@AreiaMedia Jesus! i experimented with a spare 135mm f/3.5 i had just for learning the insides of the konica lens and tried to de-click it but as you said the spring makes the iris go back to place BUT i kinda “stretched” the iris spring and it held the aperture for a long period of time tho, just as some Leica R lens that have the same issue; the iris returns to its original position after a few minutes :(. i thought someone came up with a solution but i guess you are all right on keeping the click on them. Now i have a pretty nice set of hexanons that i just opened them to take the AE lock from them. Hope you can cover some of the UC line of hexanon lens in the future🙏🏻 i have a 15mm f/2.8 and, 28mm f/1.8 and a 45-100 f/3.5 zoom but im terrified to open them because of the rarity of those optics and haven’t de-clicked them haha. Thank you so much for your response, Keep up the good work im lovinnit, cheers from México 🙏🏻

    So great, to see one of these stunners doing great again. I am sure, i'd get very nervous seeing it disassembled into pieces, because i can't service it on my own. I am uber careful with all of my lenses, even when using them, shooting photographs. I do think, the small blank metal edges need to be recolored black again, and this lens also deserves the original Contax lens cap.

  • @marcp.1752

    I own the same, 35/1.4 Contax Distagon. It's pretty clear, that the "Ninja stars" bokeh of the AE version is somewhat worse than the MM (=MultiMode) version. Also the MM does have not only the green smallest aperture, but also newer T* multicoatings. My 35/1.4 seems somehow a kind of hybrid, into the AE - MM transition phase. It's AE from it's barrel, but the rear lens mount clearly shows a MM C/Y bajonet (silver, instead of the all black AE mount) I got a decent deal from a friend of mine - because the Distagon was NOS, hence mean still *is* NOS, because i left it inside the box. I hardly wanted this lens since 89...i do own it now for some months, but haven't used it. Paperbox, zeiss quality control paper certificate, original plastic foil, and the matching leather pouch besides the styropor is all original.

    Hello, great job and very informative video. I am a huge fan of Contax Zeiss lenses and agree with everything you said. What I want is modding them into my video kit and putting the Leitax Canon mount on top of the CY mount. For this I have to remove the screws and found out that especially AEG version have very stubborn screws and are actually glued. After many readings and watching videos suggestion is applying heat on the screw, even Simmod lenses do it this way. But as you said we always need proper tools and how to use them, no one mentions what temperature should be used. I have a heat gun with a range of 100 to 500C and I do not want to damage the lens but also not to strip the screw. Do you have and advice? It would much appreciated.

      Various types depending on lens and situation. Sometimes different on each of the helicoids. Japan hobby tools helicoid grease 10 & 30, helimax XP and a few others. You just experiment on a simple lens with all the different greases, so you know how each one feels, and know what to put on each situation.

Really enjoyed the personal story about the lense you shared. Supply chain and shipping problems have made this knowledge of how to repair and service what you’ve got or can find essential. Could you do a video talking about the tools you use and how to choose the right tools when working with a lense. I know nothing in this area, but really want to know now. Had no idea this was possible. Nice inclusion of a few seconds of Musky Fire!

    Love this and your other servicing video! Excited for more! I know you mentioned about showing the floating group calibration in another video, but was just wondering how you calibrate infinity without a collimator. Also, do you check to see if the focus distances line up or are the distance marks on these lenses more for reference rather than being perfectly accurate? Thanks!

    • @AreiaMedia
      @AreiaMedia 3 роки тому

      Thank you Ben. At the infinity mark the lens should be able to go just a tiny bit over infinity, not be exactly on infinity. This guarantees the infinity is at the middle of the DOF and thus the sharpest possible and allows allows for mount variance. It's how all modern lenses are calibrated too. Infinity calibration is pretty simple without any special equipment. Your already calibrated lenses are a good indication of how it should be and how the lens should behave. You can do it simply by pointing your camera and lens at a very far object, the stars being the best possible of course. You can use the camera's zoom features or take photos on a tripod, while adjusting the lens. If you do it a few times, it will be something so simple and obvious.

    This looks great! The skin tones are beautiful. Why did you choose to use the the micro cinema instead of the pocket 4k?

      This was filmed before Pocket 4K existed.

    Really beautiful work Areia!!! How do the Contax Zeiss lenses compare to the Zeiss Supreme Primes? Is the image quality close?

      Sorry it's not even close in any parameter. The supremes even have more organic rendering in my oppinion which is supposed to be the Contaxes strong point.

    Do you have the 18mm 4.0? A video on that one would be nice.

    18:34 what is the normal distance at minimum focus and at infinity? I got the floating element out and didn't do any markings... The usual thing would be to make a marking on the side on the floating group and the lens barrel just where the helicoid comes off, but I didn't... Thanks!

      You will have to put it at a rough position and tighten the screws on the floating element ring. Mine was 17mm when at infant as I show in the video. Then go to a chart with a camera on a tripod. First focus the lens, then unscrew the three screws slightly. Then zoom in the corners 10x and turn the floaring group till you get the sharpest image. Repeat for the other corners. You might have to refocus the lens at some point and do it all over again if your floating element was way off. When you get the best performance possible, tighten the 3 screws and you are all set. It's much better to so this on a full frame high MP camera with liveview and zoom in capabilities.
