Gilly Custom
Приєднався 11 лют 2024
Let’s build something! Paul Gilly here. I like to make stuff. All kinds of stuff. I make houses, improvements to houses, cabinets, furniture, GUITARS, toys, gifts, MUSIC… Basically I’m an all-around woodworker (though I use more than just wood…) with a desire to create.
Currently, my family and I are working on building our own custom Timber Frame dream house…from the trees right on our own property! That’s right…we’re cutting our trees (mostly southern yellow pine), milling them into the timbers and lumber we need with our Woodland Mills sawmill, and using them to make our dream come alive. You can follow that journey on our series “Building the Dream, One Tree at a Time.”
You’ll also see videos with other types of content pop up here and there…because sometimes I just can’t help myself…
So welcome to our channel, let me know what you think, and don’t forget to subscribe! 😎
Catch you on the next one, God bless!

You asked, we listened! Someone recently requested we do a video showing a closer-up and more detailed view of assembling the bents. In timber framing, different parts called “bents” are typically assembled on the ground, then raised into place, then linked up with other timbers. In this video we show you how we assemble a bent! cool rafter beams, purlins, and rafters for the framing! nice to see so many layers of solid wood
Nice Job. The place is looking Awesome! Love rafter day. With a crane it’s just that easy! Thanks for the shout out again Keep it up buddy! 👍👊💪
Hi Gilly, Make a scissor truss using overlap joints. When you install trusses, you've got to use bracing boards to keep them in position laterally, since they're only designed to take vertical loads. If you're interested in hearing any more details about this, I'm happy to provide more information!
ua-cam.com/video/Nr7nh2G-GMg/v-deo.html I've made some modifications on this design, to make it a scissor truss and to have more lap joints and web members. The video is a good intro to design. Bracing is the other factor.
I'm so impressed with your family effort!

Very nice!! Although I assume not worth driving the big timbers back to the mill?

I love rafter Day! Your Dovetail floor joists look amazing. What you doing at the beach my man. Hard to make a timber frame sandcastle! Probably hard giving the crane controls up, but the lead man needs to be where ever! Love it guys keep it up and get her covered up! See you on the next one.
Me too, and we got a few more rafter days coming up! 😎
The “Rickenbacker” and the “Telecaster” are pretty sweet, too!!!
My favorite, has to be the “Acoustic Bass” with “Guitar Pick” cut-outs, (original) I like it!!!
You guys need some COMS, trying to hear each other with a diesel motor turbo, screaming in your ear! But keep up the great work, it looks great! I’m a Builder from Maine, it’s nice to see some post+beam construction, it’s a “Lost Art”, these days! I can only think of one Tech. School in my state that still does it! Central Maine Community College, Post+Beam Construction! There is another school for Marine Vessel Construction Course at Maine Maritime Academy, but that is a small part of the overall course!!! Ideally, I would have like to see a remote controlled hydraulic system($ pricey), and some “better” radio headsets ($ pricey! I am a big fan of “make it happen” and “work with what you have”! Improvise, Adapt, and Overcome! Where did you learn Post+Beam Construction Techniques, “on the job” or did you take a program, locally??? If so what school? I have a feeling, that we went to the same “University”, “The School of Hard Knocks”!!! Great Job, Team!!! It’s nice to see an “Original Idea” on UA-cam, our company motto is “Everything from, Trees to Keys”!!! Feel free to use it, but I love the idea of “One Tree at a Time”!!! I hope to see more of the build, back to “binge watching” the rest!!!
You’re right, coms would be great…I better get on that! I learned most of what I know about timber framing by just trying and doing - and believe it or not - right here on UA-cam. I learned a ton from the Shelter Institute’s youtube content. They seem like great folks. They teach timber framing classes, both online and in their workshop. And…they’re located in Maine, btw 😎. Thanks for chiming in! Enjoy!

When you're drilling for brace pegs on exterior posts you might try not drilling all the way through. About an inch past the tenon is a good depth, so you leave more post material.
@@bootsnframes7626 you’re right, whenever possible and that’s a good idea. Sometimes we have to drill all the way through if the tenon is closer to the outside. We can’t always easily drill it from the outside.
