1988 Honda crx first step to rebuilding part 1
Переглядів 1,5 тис.5 років тому
I got this 1988 y-49 crx out of a field, were it has been strong for the last 20 years. As you can tell from the beginnings the video, I reused all the original parts except a gasket kit just to see if it would start, cylinder walls were rusted and pistons were seized. Makes great compression and will soon live again!!

On3 performance turbo on a 05 mustang gt
Sounds awesome. What exhaust setup?
Wym sounds awesome all u can hear is the shit music
What’s the exact cam
Whats the grind specs on the cams?
What tune are you using
The tune was a bama tune from American muscle at the time
What’s the specs on these cams? Are they the lunati 264:268 low lift turbo cams or which grind? They have like 15 different grinds for the 3v
Unfortunately I don’t know the exact specs anymore, I believe I purchased them through MMR and were the stage 2 turbo cams at the time. Iv’e since changed cams due to follower failure because I can’t justify the price for jesels. So I made a custom grind cam for the current set up, still breaking followers just not as often, luckily haven’t destroyed the cams like I did with these.
Canada here...crx owners worldwide, feel the 'rebirth'...keep turning that wrench... one love
where is the crx is it for sale?
The yellow crx on the other video has been sold and slightly modified for off-road useage. Due to title issues at that time. Although now it has a title with a blown engine.
@@outlawmustangsgarage2887 whoever has it if they want to sell it been looking for one do you have their info?
Unfortunately I do not
How did you manage with the PTV clearance? Unless you’re running trickflowheads
Even though the cams are rated as a "stage 4" they don't have a huge cam lobe to cause an issue with the PTV clearance. Only thing that was done on install was putting cams in and putting it to factory timing, the car to this day has a bama tune in it lol at least to my knowledge.
@@outlawmustangsgarage2887 that makes no sense at all
@@Kick.Blacklist the car is running stock heads, and factory timing marks were used because the owner didn’t degree the cams themselves, at the time of purchase (nearly 5 years ago) the cams were considered a stage 4. They didn’t need anything special to run the cams in the car. As for my poor communication on the previous comment I probably relied when I was at work and it’s hard not to write a book as a comment. 😅
@@Kick.Blacklist also seeing as the comment was over a year old I don’t know if I was the one who replied or another that has access to the account. Been inactive for some time because I haven’t been able to make any videos worth the time (kinda lost interest) and work has been overwhelming the past year lol
Hey.. did you have to put a tune in yours
thats really a trick question, some will say a tune is needed and others won't, for this vehicle at the time a bama tune was uploaded into the car since it had supporting mods and wanted it to run correctly, however i have heard of people not tuning them because they dont have vvt like the newer 3v engines.
@@outlawmustangsgarage2887 awesome .. we have it running and it runs well has the mean growl but still.looking for that heavy lope..lol
@@lisareaves8390 to be honest off the shelf cams will never have a serious heavy lope unless you get thumper cams, from what i have heard and seen on modular engines, however you can always call comp cams, or if you know someone that grinds cams you can have them build you a set!
What are your shift points with the stage 4 cams?
with the stage 4 cams i think the owner of the car gained roughly 500 rpm over stock if im not mistaken.
@@outlawmustangsgarage2887 ok so that's about 6500rpm?
@@krownvikkhris3004 correct, to my knowledge i believe thats what the specs were for that cam grind.
@@outlawmustangsgarage2887 ok, because I'd love to put those in my 06 P71 crownvic when I get my vortech supercharger
@@krownvikkhris3004 It would be an awesome set up that for sure man!
Sounds nasty! 😈
What upgrades did you do for this cam? I’m looking to get a stage 4. Anything I should be concerned with or any problems you ran into
Nothing that was crazy, the guy added a updated intake manifold and bought BBK throttle body and CAI. Replaced all his timing components when he was in there and all the followers just to have everything new, plus the car had almost 175k miles on it
@@outlawmustangsgarage2887 do u gotta mess with the head or will stock heads do Or valves
@@josetamez9500 didn’t have to mess with any of it. Stock timing marks no adjustments and worked like a charm
Think I’m going to have to call BS on stage 4 cam. My son got a stage 3 and it’s got a hell of a lot more lope to it than yours. Listen to other videos on you tube.
You can call BS all you want, when purchased back in 2015-2016 it was a comp stage 4 from American muscle, they did tell us at the time or purchase that it was a different sound compared to their other stages, and just because lope is choppier doesn’t mean anything, my turbo mustang has less lope than this new edge but is still more aggressive on specs. Just sayin.
@@outlawmustangsgarage2887 hey I checked on American muscle but they aren’t there can you please find some for me I have a 2007 Ford sport trac 3v and really want stage 4 cams but can’t find it
@@GamerBros-hk5gn American muscle only offers so much, theres really not a stage 4 cam for the 3v head design unless you go with custom ground cams, you should check out comp cams website and see what kind of cams they have to offer directly. personally i love the sound of a thumpr cam but performance isnt the best.
The stage 1-5 on comp cams website is divided into 2 different types of cams, high lift pi cams and low lift NPI cams, the stage 3 are a PI cam with .550 lift, the stage 3 are a NPI cam with 0.50 lift. Also tuning, exhaust, intake, and other factors would affect how much it chops, to me personally this thing chops like crazy but to each their own.
😎👍👊👊
What brand cams?
Look them up on American muscle
Literally says it right in the title
Nick Ferrara and why you telling me for Ik what those cams are
hey karl they are comp cams, bought through American Muscle several years back now.
Did he use the stock cam gears? I've already got the same cams and behive springs. Just unsure whether I should get adjustable cam gears to advance or retard the timing. Thanks
Yes, he used the stock cam gears for it and just put it in time like a normal 4.6 2v, if you buy the adjustable gears you can degree the cams to make sure everything is solid and adjust accordingly. I wish I knew the actually gains from these cams, but sadly I do not, and the guy hasn't taken it to a dyno that I know of since hes had them installed.
OUTLAW MUSTANGS-AR not too concerned with gains as of right now because I have other things to be added which I’m sure differ from what he has, but I just want to be sure I have good PTV clearance without the cam gears. Thanks a lot.
Turn down the music.
When using a cell phone to upload videos, its hard to tell the actual volume of the music. when it transferred over to the audio clip the music volume was at 15%. listening to it on a computer it does sound a lot louder.
These are the XFI SPR stage 3 cams?
yes, they are. with phase limiters.
Sounds perfect
And pistons needed to be cut for clearance or changed?
nope, all stock
@@outlawmustangsgarage2887 ain't no way anything bigger then stage 2 needs to valve reliefs
@@gsc2866 I agree ran 270s for awhile and both engines has a very small hairline nic on all 8 cylinders. With stock components and lining the dots up dot to dot.
@@gsc2866 just depends on the grind of the cam, at the time the cam that was purchased was a stage 4, but was made by comp cams and said it didnt require notching, just because its a higher stage cam doesn't mean the lobes will be massive. But this isn't my car, its a friends car lol
@@gsc2866 run the stage 4 comp cams (XE274H) in my 02 gt, no PTV issues and no degreeing needed
Now power numbers?
if I could get him to take it to a dyno, I would post it, but he's slacking lol
Sweet im looking into putting cams in my 04 2v, so i was just sobering what it took to run them I appreciate your response👍👍
These cams are far too large for a pi intake equipped 2v. You could likely fit them without too much ptv issue but running a proper mhs or crower cam spec'd for the combo would average more power and still sound great. Id run a upgraded spring with any cam.
Changed springs I assume? And if so what else are dine ti the heads to use that big of a cam?
Tyler Murpht yes springs were changed, as for head work there isn’t any. Car runs strong still as a daily driver. It’s a buddy’s car and he wanted those cams because they are aggressive
@OUTLAW MUSTANGS-AR Recently had my engine grenade. Looking for a used swap. Can only find 16-17 motors. I saw yours was a direct swap. Did you use the same ECU or buy a new one for this?
Used the same ecu, as long as its a ecoboost engine itl bolt directly up. unless they had a cam or crankshaft change which I don't believe they did.this 15 eco, now has a 16 eco in it.
@@outlawmustangsgarage2887 Thanks! Also one last concern is the flywheel from the manual to auto. I found the engine but it's in a manual car. Should bolt directly up no? If not I can swap the flywheel from the bad motor over.
You will need to swap the old flywheel from the auto over, the flywheel from the auto is different from the manual trans. so make sure you take the flywheel off the old engine as long as it isn't damaged.
@@outlawmustangsgarage2887 Thanks for the hlep! Also, when you pulled the motor did you pull the trans with it as well or is there enough room to get on-top of the bell housing to pull those bolts?
plenty of room through the top side
Those wheels are period correct 👌
yeah I think they look pretty cool on the car, I havnt had a lot of time nor the money to continue with the build but that will be changing here soon, buddy of mine bought some car parts off me and now its time to get her rolling again!
Did you need to do anything with the ecu? Car ran just fine after the swap?
ze OP master it originally has the same engine it it, but it broke a valve from too Much boost, so we found one out of a year newer I believe and just straight swapped it in, car ran fine after that, and is still on the street till this day( different owner but same car)
@@outlawmustangsgarage2887 Alright. My motor recently blew and I'm set on swapping in a used motor. Just don't know if it's as simple as a straight swap or if there is anything else involved.
ze OP master it’s a straight swap, while your in there, flush your coolant and make sure you do a 50/50 mix on coolant. Other than that it took like a day in total time not knowing what I was doing
@@outlawmustangsgarage2887 Sweet. That's good to hear. And yeah I'll definitely do a coolant flush while I'm at it
Was that before or after a tune?
Joseph Garcia that was with the new tune installed, but had it revised afterwards, cars still running strong and it’s been two years since all the work was done. Just didn’t really have a active UA-cam account to post the video lol
OUTLAW MUSTANGS-AR do you know what else is done to it?
4:10 Gears, stage 2 clutch, bbk Trottle body, cold air intake, catless exhaust, and updated intake manifold so its not that cheap plastic design lol and its on a bama tune.
@@outlawmustangsgarage2887 I've had good luck with with my 2011 crown Vic pi intake and rtv'd NPI crossover on my 1996. It already had the aluminum crossover replacement NPI intake but still leaked. I'll be going to a Vic jr sooner than later tho and will be done with the crossover problems.
OUTLAW MUSTANGS-AR how much power was it laying down
you gave a life to this iconic beauty..
it will be awesome to see it on the roads again, subscribed.
I agree, I’ve got several projects going on, but hopefully I can bring it back. I’ll have to actually sit down and edit all the photos and videos when I start back up on it here soon. I’m just trying to get it running first 😂
Take care of her. The y-49's all get crashed or something falls on them. Look it up if you havent seen it. Goodluck my friend!
Vincent Brower I just piled this one together, unfortunately it’s a slow build, I just ordered a gas tank for my daily (the white one) and I’m going to put the old gas tank in the yellow one, trying to keep it original as possible. Make sure you share this video 😂

Dynoed?
sadly no this car was never dyno'd
may be a year late on the reply but never got a notification
How’s the on3 kit holding up so far? What are your dyno #’s?
hey man, the kit itself is holding up good, I have eibach 2" lowering springs and where the tubing goes under the control arms bottoms out on bumpy roads so I had it cut and re welded so it was flat instead of round to give more space. as for dyno numbers I havnt dynod it yet due to it raining a lot but when I was on 6 psi with thumper cams it was 431/409
OUTLAW MUSTANGS-AR nice! My on3 kit is getting installed as we speak. It’s my daily driver, so I’ll keep it low boost for a while
I did the same thing, keep it around 6-8psi if you have full bolt ons already. and if you have an aftermarket camshafts in it then I would highly advise changing lash adjusters and roller. I had mine fail at 8 psi and had 130k on the engine.. ended up dropping a valve lol
Cool man. Hopefully I’m tuned and on the road by next week
who is tunning the car?
Looking to get a set of them for my car. How’s they perform? Do you have the part number for them? Idle sounds nice and choppy.
Does it drone ?
not mine
Samething happened to mine. Over bosted 2016 ecoboost with 37k blew up. How much did it cost for the labor? Or did you know somebody? Thx in advance
Eduardo Ponce it was my buddies car and me and my dad with a few friends tackled the job in a weekend. Pretty simple actually. His old engine still ran just had a slight tick from a valve spring or lifter didn’t look t much into it just found a good deal on a engine and replaced it
Wonder if it would be possible to put a 5.0 in a ecoboost sense there is the same amount of space
Yeah it would be possible, you would just have to buy new motor mounts, wire harness, and engine and trans I would think... everything else should be able to programmed for the cluster and other dash pieces.
OUTLAW MUSTANGS-AR what about the rear end? I'm planning on doing a swap down the road
HoUsT0n23 what do you mean?
OUTLAW MUSTANGS-AR i was talking about the gearing on the irs on the ecoboost
HoUsT0n23 yeah it can be done, idk how difficult it would be lol
What kind of power it's making & what boost is it on
with the factory bottom end on 6lbs it made 431hp/409tqbut I am doing some changes to the car because ive gone through 2 camshaft phasers.
im going to put lock outs instead of limiters in it now and make a few adjustments on 8lbs and I want to see what kind of numbers I can make from that, its my daily driver so I want to make it fun and reliable. just broke 150k miles lol
OUTLAW MUSTANGS-AR that's good numbers for 6 psi
yeah, I thought so, I have not ran it on the track since iv'e put it on 8psi because I was waiting to get some slicks for it to see its real potential, I mean for a 5 speed that is lol
Does it chop?
Any engine mods? Sounds great. Working on getting mine back up and running.
TekMan05 hey man sorry for the late response! I have mmr stage 2 turbo cams, ford racing plenum, bbk twin 62mm throttle body, u/d pullies, bbk shorty tuned headers, and tuned by Lito. Also running 3:31 gears in the rear end and 6lbs of boost with the 70mm turbo. I recently changed the boost to 8lbs and havnt tuned it in yet.
hey bro do u have the part number of ur cams or the box with part number i just found the cams a guy sold me for mmr stage 1 turbo cams are blower cams if u dont mine lol
Jose Solano hey sorry for the late reply I didn't notice I had a message I don't know the part number off the top of my head but I do know if you go to mmrs website they do have a base part number you can check. If I get the chance to find mine I will write back
i spray everything no leaks and dont know if u know him his name is Manuel pazo (lito)
u have vacuum i dont my car read around 4and 5 ur from 14 to 18 i have no vacuum
that's actually my wideband gauge, as for vacuums at idle mines roughly around -19. I would say double check all of your lines. also how is your boost gauge hooked up, and you running off manifold or turbo vacuum?
im runing of the manifold i sealed all the exits from the manifold and just left the gauge still read low , before install the mmr cams it was running fine im thinking or my tuner or the cams
who do you have tuning it? as much as I hate to say this but make sure timing is correct, and also I want to stress the fact of checking all the vacuum lines, even off the manifold. Get a can of carb spray or something of that matter to see while the car is idling to see if anything will change. As for the tuner section I don't know if they would be able to cause something like that, long story short I had thumpr cams and my vacuum was about -9 and then while driving off throttle and decelerating it would go to -19 lol. one final thing is check your gauge and make sure your line is pinched (happened to me) and it wasn't showing I was build boost but would go to -10 vacuum. hope this helps
u guys had any problem with the cams ? im having problem with them car is readying to low of vacuum timing is correct no vacuum leak anything
I will upload a video jose and let me know if this is what you are referring to.
