I agree in some way. It gets quite frustrating because we have to sit their obeying a speed limit that doesn't suit the conditions while everyone else does what they want!

We can't teach a learner driver to exceed the speed limit to match the flow of traffic, it's illegal and they will fail the test. I get where you're coming from, I remember driving in Hawaii - no one was doing the speed limit, at least 5 to 10 mph over. Yes, in America we would be in the fast lane but this is Australia so we are in the slow lane! 😆

You can't win! We get abused daily for all sorts of things! I do feel the 40 km/h speed limit in this video may not have suited the conditions as there were no road workers and plenty of barriers, plus the road was in good condition. Regardless, we had to obey that limit!

Thanks for watching and thanks for your comment, Jeff. :) I understand where you're coming from and that might work in a vehicle with a good turning circle, but in the vehicle we are driving - not so much. We need to pivot the vehicle on an angle as much as possible, keeping the steering wheel locked right and then left until we reach each kerb completely. If we don't do this we could end up doing a 4 to 5 point turn! 😅 In regard to dry steering, with low speed manoeuvres most students when first starting will turn the steering wheel while stationary (dry steer) so my mention of it in this video was to remind the student that we want to move and turn where possible so that we don't hurt the steering components and wear down the tyres. I continually say "move and turn" to students until it becomes ingrained in their mind. FYI, we do sometimes dry steer when in a very tight spot but it's rare. If you would like to do another drive together in regard to 3 point turns, I'm always up for it. 🙏🏾

In terms of states in Australia, I believe Victoria is the only one but don't quote me on that. Hook turns do exist elsewhere around the world but I'm not sure where. Yes, this type of turn could be stressful for drivers coming from interstate - that's why I created this video, in the hope it can help people understand this type of turn. 🙏🏾

It's all about the conditions. We can't always do the speed limit due to various reasons, but when it's possible and safe we could be at the speed limit.

Yes, they will impede left turning traffic. I guess for the CBD - trams require priority so some of the hook turns allow for that. However, they have introduced hook turns into the Carlton (inner-city) suburb where there are no trams! I'm not sure this was necessary. So far I haven't seen too many issues like left turning traffic being impeded. You mentioned "we're not allowed to queue in intersections", the same applies in Victoria. Thanks for your comment. :)

Thanks for your thoughts, James. Signage might help but I personally think the marking should just be removed. The other side of the intersection has two lanes and both have no markings!

this is the attitude that needs to change. 20 kays under is fine if the conditions call for it, which can be a number of things from weather to traffic and the drivers skill levels. Hell, their familiarity with the road plays a factor. Ive had people get mad at me for doing 20 under while i was driving a 3.5 tonne van (work related) through narrow streets lined both sides with cars that i have never been on. Youre not the only road user and everyones skill, confidence and judgement is different. Keep that in mind the next time youre tailgating or road raging at someone for driving within these considerations.

It's all about the conditions. If someone is blatantly going slower for no good reason then obviously that isn't right. I had to move house recently and had a van fully loaded. I had to slow down earlier and take corners much slower than in my performance car, yet everyone around me got annoyed. I think a little thought and empathy needs to be had before people make judgements. Regardless of all this, I have been behind people driving slower for no reason and should be driving faster because the conditions suit it. I think in regard to drivers skill levels - if they are a learner or probationary driver then there should be some sympathy for them but a full licenced driver should be able to handle themselves well - if not, maybe they need some lessons?

@@MntlMajorkozmo I drive to my dad's on a road where there are a million Sunday drivers, often old and inconsiderate. Multiple times (on one specific bend) people will drive 40 in a 60, slow to 10 MPH or sometimes a dead stop, then creep round a massive country road corner, then speed up to 40, and continue doing 40 in a 20 zone. Being a bend, I don't attempt an overtake, but that's the kind of behaviour I'm on about. 40 everywhere, regardless of road conditions.

Thank you. :) 100% on confidence and ability - this is why driving lessons and learning to drive with the right educator is imperative! Many novice drivers naturally when first learning to drive are not confident in how slow or fast they should be travelling according to the conditions. They tend to slow down too early or not enough, or drive at a speed which doesn't suit the road. Basically their ability to control the vehicle can be erratic... At some point throughout their training experience with me, they learn how to truly feel and drive the vehicle at the appropriate speed according to the conditions. 🙏🏾

Tourists would certainly get confused by this. I guess that's where these videos can hopefully help.

100%. I showcase this near the end of the video. I think people either don't know or just don't care. What we do, is when the traffic light directly in front of us turns amber, we start rolling ever so slowly to create the momentum to then go when the light turns green on the road we are turning into. Rather than being completely stopped to immediately moving. This can sometimes help with stopping people from behind beeping and is much better for flow. And of course, being highly aware of who is behind us before committing with a right mirror and head check. 🙏🏾

@@CRUDEDriving I suspect that most are ignorant but I am aware that some of the illuminated hook turn signs have a wait flashing signal that drivers are ignoring so it could be a don't care attitude. But good tip, I will employ it and see if that helps.

Yes, entirely from my vehicles terrible quality dash cam (front & rear). Definitely different behaviour with the plates up, but there were many without the plates which was just me driving and the level of behaviour doesn't get any better! 😅 What you see in this compilation is not even half of what I have. I wish I had more good footage but the bad is so constant. I hope to make a dash cam compilation of good behaviour, it just might take me longer to collate the footage.

Yeah, that one was ridiculous! We had just turned into the street so it wasn't like they were following us for a while or anything. They literally turned into the street, flew up behind us and went around immediately.

Yes that is correct. Many drivers may already be doing this technique. We obviously have to teach it and therefore explain what it is. Students don't really know it when they first start learning. FYI, it's spelt "braking", not "breaking." Cheers for your comment. 🙏🏾

I brake with my left foot, it's far safer because right foot power left foot stopping. There's never the chance of hitting the wrong pedal like an old fart in a shopping centre, and I can brake instantly.

Back when I did a defensive driving course, we were taught to switch to left foot for brakes, right foot for accelerator, instead right foot for both accelerator and brakes. Hence, I am usually always brake shadowing.

I brake with my left foot on a race track but I won't do it on public roads and I won't teach it due to the complexities around it. I also drive manual often and teach manual sometimes. I have some friends who left foot brake and I guess if you can safely drive with left foot braking, it's fine.

What American terms are we using that you want us to stop using?

Before approaching the intersection, if there are already vehicles inside and we cannot fit beyond the pedestrian crossing in-front of us, then we should not enter the intersection and wait back for the next cycle of traffic lights. Hope this helps. :)

@ that would be great. And where there aren’t ramp lights, the speed limit sign at the START of every on-ramp in the state. Please. Then, while I’m on a roll, please make the first sign in a speed zone look different from all the repeater signs - eg like an orange border around the sign, or if it’s an illuminated sign have the circle flashing (and if it’s a lower limit than normal for that road have little yellow flashing lights as well).

100% it's much safer to go with the flow of traffic rather than being that one person sitting on or a dot under holding everyone up and getting road raged.

I understand where you're coming from and if everyone is going faster then maybe the speed limit for that road needs to be reviewed. The particular road in this video needs to have a variable speed limit sign. It's 60 km/h for when the filtered traffic lights are active up ahead but in this video they are not active so the 60 km/h speed limit isn't necessary.

I'm more surprised that it's a Victorian road surface that doesn't look like a bombed airfield from WW2

I find Australia speed limits for HGVs to be a little bit bonkers it's good that your explaining your car speedo is over reporting and why the hgv can overtake you (if using waze it shows actual speed constantly, I also use a GPS speed hud as well) but for passing your driving test yes you have to use your car speedo even if it's out by 3% (witch is quite a lot at higher speeds)

@@CRUDEDriving that they can do speeds of cars on highways/motorways (limited to 56mph in the UK) usually if we see a car going slower then HGV the car driver is going way to slow

Where are you from and what rule book are you referring to? In this scenario, the bicycle lane ends and the black car drives past that lane and into the intersection/junction to turn left. The rule in Victoria, Australia (Road Safety Road Rules 2017) is Rule 141(2) - The rider of a bicycle or an electric scooter must not ride past, or overtake, to the left of a vehicle that is turning left and is giving a left change of direction signal. In this video, I'd say the last few cyclists were required to adhere to that rule. However, we need to be mindful of more vulnerable road users regardless of the rules. 🙏🏾

@CRUDEDriving I'm in Victoria and I'm referring the 2016 Road to Solo Driving book. I've checked again and think I just misunderstood.. On pg. 95 it says 'if you need to turn left from the road, you may drive along the bicycle lane for up to 50m only if it is necessary to do so. You should be courteous to cyclists. You must give way to cyclists in a bicycle lane, and only move into a bicycle lane when it is safe to do so.' Then pg. 113 says 'to make a left turn you *must* approach the intersection as close to the left side of the road as possible, but give way to bicycles when crossing into the bicycle lane.' To my knowledge the book never states who actually gives way when turning left. I think I might just stick to the actual legislation 😅 Thank you for addressing these things in your videos. It's clearly invaluable!

Regardless of rules, I think this video is a good example of sharing the space and looking out for one another. The road to solo book is innacurate.
