    I'd love to know a few things about this. Usually, the main hull is asymmetric on a proa, but yours seems symmetric. Also, the Ama is usually thin and 60% length of the main hull, but yours look like a small but chubby little Ama. Can you share your thoughts on why you did it like that? I'm looking into building a proa soon and I'm gathering all the info I think I will need to build it. I am not one to care so much about tradition if something else works better, so I had to ask you those questions! :)

      I rely on board rudders to create most of lateral resistance, hence the main hill is relatively shallow with flattish bottom. Originally the boat has had lots of ideas I tried to test. Some of them proven to be difficult to implement or not functioning as designed. The stubby outrigger is from that era and it needs to be replaced with a long and skinny one. I tried to build a boat which has a shallow draft(success), very maneuverable (satisfactory), and very light (acceptable). I also was hoping that in any wind above 4 knots I would be able to drive the outrigger in planning mode. That I can’t archive reliably in all conditions and I’m planning to build a new outrigger over the winter, although I may start building a new boat from the scratch, knowing what I know already.

    I have a question about Drama Queen--do you have any issues with weather helm? I've been told that proas need their sails far forward to keep from turning up into the wind, but you seem to be doing very well. Is the rudder in front of the main hull the solution here? edit: rewatched your rudder video and saw your explanation about using the two boards to move the center of resistance anywhere you like. My apologies for missing it the first time, and thanks for the great explanation in that vid!

    Love your work. Just wondering of what are the advantages of your system over others. The simple Newick / Brown cassette rudder / board does seem to be best for most . Though doing similar though with a fully rotating spade rudder perhaps even better, though needs more engineering

    • @VladimirUD
      @VladimirUD 5 місяців тому

      I built the boat to participate in Watertribe events. Sailing in very shallow waters are part of challenges. So rudders are designed to kick up/absorb a hit. It is impossible to do with Newick/Brown/Harris designs.

    Not the neatest of manoeuvres, perhaps the Achilles heel of the proa. (Not a criticism of yours). It is equivalent to wearing ship in a tacking boat…that can not tack. (Which I had to do in my cat, damaged keels and strong winds) Is it possible to sail by the lee at all?

      It is slow but it is safe unlike gybing in heavy weather. Yes in light to moderate winds sailing by lee totally possible and I have done it a lot. The volume of outrigger is limiting factor and I’m going to build a bigger ama.

I must go off the wind, sail on a beam reach, some times slow, sometimes I may almost stop, now I shunt and move my rig to my new bow, boat heads up and off I go, sailing to windward.... Your boat turns around it's sail, like a wind vane, Amazing!! • @VladimirUD
      @VladimirUD 7 місяців тому

      Thera are a few things, by design, to make it easier. One is the light outrigger. Another one is high volume sealed mast acting as a float. And the third one is the mast stepped on main hull and tilted to leeward. It prevents the boat from passing the “outrigger straight up” point. It is very stable on its side and it has no tendency to turtle, unlike Hobie 16… The only problem is the need to stay attached to the boat, it can get blown away faster than I can swim…

    Как соотносится у вас площадь парусов и суммарная площадь швертов ? И каково соотношение длины и ширины погруженной части швертов ? Понятно, что для разных курсов ответы на вопросы будет разными, но можно, к примеру, рассмотреть только бейдевинд.

    • @VladimirUD
      @VladimirUD 8 місяців тому

      Площадь погруженной части шверта 0.8x0.24 = 0.19 кв. метра Удлинение 3.3, площадь паруса 11.4 кв метра, площадь проекции погруженной части основного корпуса 5.5x0.1/2 = 0.28 кв.м. Передний шверт работает в диапазоне от 3/4 погруженной части до 1/4 при курсе бейдевинд, в зависимости от условий и силы ветра… То есть суммарная погруженная часть швертов в средних условиях 0.19+0.09 = 0.28 кв метров. Суммарная погруженная площадь, работающая на создание бокового сопротивления (корпус и оба шверта) 0.28+0.28=0.56 кв.м, или 5% от парусности.

      The main hull has flattish bottom with round chines. majority of lateral resistance necessary to sail upwind comes from the boards(rudders). If I don’t do so, the boat will round up and stall.

      Thank you. The mast is not standing on the main hull. It sits of a strut about a foot off the hull. So the geometry of stays and loads on the mast is not any different than on a wide multihull. Look up the video where I talk about sail rig on my channel.
