    Did using the ether spray really damage the tractor engine? I've heard for years that it is not a good practice to rely on ether for starting but mostly I was told that is because ether tends to wash the oil off of the cylinder walls. I guess I don't quite get how that little bit of ether is going to damage the head gaskets or anything else. Those engines are designed to contain quite violent explosions 50 or 60 times per second.

    • @rcdieselchannel
      @rcdieselchannel 3 дні тому

      @@BryanTorok Nah, that didn't bother a thing. I was being purely sarcastic. You can damage an engine very quickly with ether if it gets too much and because of that, some people act like the engine blows up with any ether at all - I was just teasing about that. Some engines are more susceptible to ether damage than others too. When mixed with diesel fuel, ether lowers the temperature at which diesel ignites, which in turn advances timing. This means if you give it too much ether you can have combustion happening while the piston is still on its way up on the power stroke. So now you have combustion happening at the wrong time and that pressure spike is also more volatile than normal - that's how it can bend rods, crack pistons and blow head gaskets. The fix for this is simply to feather the ether and don't give it any more than it takes to get it to fire. The way I did it was completely wrong - but this wasn't the first time I've done this and I know my tractor 😊 Ether will mix with the oil on the cylinder walls and burn it off, removing the lube for the rings and because the oil helps the rings seal, this simultaneously lowers compression, making the starting problem even worse. The key is this: that only happens when the cylinder is not getting fuel. If the fuel gelled, stalling the engine or you otherwise run out of fuel, starting/running it off of ether is very hard on it for that reason. However, on a cold start, when the cylinders are getting fuel but not making enough heat to ignite it, that's what ether is for and in this case, used in moderate amounts, will not harm most engines.

    What is your thought on these newer JD tractors? I've been looking for a bigger tractor for our farm. After researching about the newer 8R's and all the emissions stuff I decide to stay away from them. Ended up finding a 5700h 8410 in really nice shape.

    • @rcdieselchannel
      @rcdieselchannel 8 днів тому

      @@markhoogendyk879 From an operators stand point, the 8R is a nicer tractor to operate, nicer cab, nicer controls, although they sure don't start up like the older ones. The 8410 cab is not as comfy, controls aren't as nice amd the plastic upholstery is kind of crummy. From a repair standpoint, the 7R & 8R emissions are a nightmare and the general electrical can be enough of a problem as well. Splitting this 7R is about 3 times the work of splitting an 8000 series tractor. The 8410 you picked up is a much more solid tractor, far less electrical and the 6081 Engine in that 8410 is tried and true - solid solid engine. So in my opinion, your 8410 is a 2X better tractor. I personally think the 8000 series was the last of "the good ones". Thanks for the question! 👍

    Что за глупость держать кислотный аккумулятор на улице при отрицательной температуре? Он всегда должен быть в тепле и подзаряжен, чтобы в случае необходимости быстро завести генератор. А генератор должен быть накрыт от снега тряпкой, чтобы растаявший снег не залил электрику в нем.

    • @rcdieselchannel
      @rcdieselchannel 9 днів тому

      🤣Every piece of equipment in North America comes factory with a lead acid battery and they work just fine in sub-zero temperatures 😂 The electronics on the generator are all mounted in a steel box. A little snow on the engine doesn't bother the electronics in a box any more than the electronics under the hood of a car or truck is bothered by the snow on the roads....

@ 😅I had to laugh at that one. I live in Canada, not Siberia.... It doesn't get THAT cold here. There are two 1,000CCA batteries in the tractor, two 900CCA batteries in the pickup and an 850CCA battery on the generator. I'm not pulling all those batteries out every time I use a piece of equipment. It's too much work and completely unnecessary. I don't know about where you live, but here, batteries are sized per application with a special rating to ensure they will still have enough cranking power to start engines in the cold. That special rating is CCA - Cold Cranking Amps. I do agree, the battery I had on the generator was too small....but....it's always worked, even in the cold and if you pay attention, the battery wasn't the problem.... 🙂

      @@cineminded Wow, great question! So for me personally, I prefer to always go new - but I don't always replace them. Head bolts sometimes are very expensive. Technically, as long as it is not a torque-to-yield headbolt, you are just fine to resuse them, especially in a stock application. Many times, the manufacturer will give you a tolerance spec for bolt stretch. If it's stretched too much, it needs to be replaced. If its within the tolerance, the bolt is good. I've had many times where the used bolts just won't take the torque when reinstalling the head and then you're forced to go with new bolts. In recent years, I've come across an Allan head bolt that works great as a head bolt, if I can get it in the right sizes. Much cheaper than head bolts but just as strong and in some cases, stronger.

      @@fredf3391 Yes sir what about them? I rolled them in, somewhere around the 11 minute mark in the Part 1 video. I didn't take any video footage of rolling them in. There are other videos I'll be posting where I do show that process.

It's usually the Milwaukee following that's too full of themselves to realize there are some really good power tools out there that aren't red..... So I usually just razz them red boys back 😜

    Maybe just me but I didn’t see you covering up the hydraulic pump while you went to went to get the hydraulic line replaced. How did you do that or is anything that fits in reach of your hands “allowed”?

    • @rcdieselchannel
      @rcdieselchannel 14 днів тому

      Eagle eyes!!! I actually stuck a plastic tapered plug in the outlet of the pump and a JIC cap on the valve stack when I left. I had the line made up at JR Bearing & Power, my favorite farm store, since I was right in town there. I carry a mobile crimper on the truck but I don't carry much for hydraulic hoses or flange fittings because I just don't' have the room. I can have $6,000 worth of fittings and hose on the truck and still not have the right stuff. Because I work on everything, I never know what I'm getting into 🙃

      Nice and no offence, I was just curious. On the truck you basically have some form of universal alternatives and in the shop more variety. And JR is my go-to as well 😉
