Subscribed! dont know if anyone posted about this - but the Trooper uniforms are surplus from the movie "Starship Troopers" ... The show was on a famously tight budget for its entire run.

Somehow I missed this back in 2002. Not sure why. Friend at work so Amoure'd with it I decided to look it up. Bought the episodes and final movie and I am now a big fan. So pleased I built my friend a detailed model of the ship for Christmas. He was speechless.

Hello JustsMyles, just for your information. The actors that play Captain Mal and the ships Mechanic Kaylee are both Canadian. Just a fun fact for you. The board game they are playing at the beginning is Chinese Checkers.

As for your short comment on Supes being in the military, I agree with you, it would no doubt make the military more powerful and efficient. But the reason the program took their line of thinking you would have to ask the producers and writers. Another good reactive episode Myles, keep up the good work.

Silly trivia you may already know: “mal” gets used in a ton of English words as well, like “malnutrition” and “malice”. It’s also why we have names like “Maleficent” (from Disney) and “Draco Malfoy” in Harry Potter.

What are Reavers? Other than who all these people are, that's pretty much what this series and and the movie is all about. You will learn all about Reavers slowly over time.

A reminder to be careful about (or just outright skip) the “Previously on Firefly” clips before episodes. They *WILL* be spoilers, because you’ll see a character from a previous episode, and the intended surprise appearance of that character in the episode you’re about to watch is no longer a surprise.

The mix of comedy and sci-fi and the way these characters are written is an amazing thing to me, unmatched. Such a shame we didn't get more. Two reasons the show failed, from what I understand (happy to hear other comments!). 1, this pilot, yeah I don't think it worked either, too many unanswered questions, and 2, they time they showed it on TV, it was at a totally bad time that kept a lot of people from seeing it. Sad stuff. Your cats look lovely! We have four and since I started working from home it's lovely to have them around... only sometimes annoying :D To say English isn't your first language, you really don't need to apologise for how well you speak and understand it!! Just thank you for doing the reactions in English, since most of us never bother to become fluent in another language. Looking forward to more! And yeah, I'll be sticking around after Firefly :) Shiny!

That dialog between Book and Mal in the beginning briefly recapped Simon and River's backstory, his own position on the ship, and Mal religious affiliation. First episode material right there.

Only Mal could put so much meaning and irony into a simple "Darn".

Pretty sure Mal did put Jayne in command. It's common practice to establish a chain of command, so that things don't fall into chaos when the leader is unavailable or incapable of leading. US president, then vice president, then speaker of the House, then secretary of state, then other cabinet members in a certain order. Most likely, there is a similar structure in Canadian government too - if something happens with the prime minister, it's predetermined who'd take over. Now, Firefly had a crew of five initially; Mal is the leader, Zoe is his #2, but of the others - Wash, Kaylee, and Jayne - who is more capable of dealing with a crisis?

According to Firefly lore, Unification Day (U-Day), is celebrated on September 20th.

May I also suggest the ‘80’s western Lonesome Dove. 4 part mini series based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by the same name. Both Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall have said they consider it to be finest work of their entire careers. I think you’ll really like it.

I think they are playing chinese checkers in the beginning. Which makes sense, given the whole Chinese themes in the show. BTW, originally Kaylee was supposed to be Chinese, but they had trouble finding the right actress; meanwhile, Jewel Staite gave a strong audition and they hired her.

This si the feature-length Pilot episode. It is true there is a also a movie called Serenity, but that takes place after the series, a few years later. Mal and his crew are criminals, according to the law, but they are no really bad people. Firefly is the class of ship, there are not many of them left, as it is an old design. The ship is named 'Serenity'. Kaylee is just adorable, she is the engineer who can fix anything. Pilot Wash and First Mate Zoey are a married couple. Being a Compnion is a very respectable job in thie universe. They have a guild.training houses and Compnions are highly educated to fit in with the highest levels of society. Having Inara aboard opens many doors, she pays rent for use of the shuttle, but does not otherwise support them financially

Pretty cat! When they suddenly break in to Mandarin Chinese, it is usually because they are swearing and the censors don't pick up on it it it's not in English.

You're doing great - and what people say is true, somehow other reactors fail to notice the "two-by-two hand of blue". (I don't normally comment on personal stuff, but you brought it up so: you look fine.)

Don't sell yourself short about not getting Sci Fi plots. I saw you figure out a lot on fallout reaction. You're smart and you were so close on something at the end of this episode I've only seen one reactor get. What color were the gloves you mentioned those two looking for her were wearing. My favorite episode, I believe many will agree, is episode 8. Looking forward to the rest of your reactions and what you chose next.

Welcome to the 'verse. I'm glad your channel got a bump from the show. Most of us fans enjoy seeing it through another's eyes. Another show I've seen boost viewership, though a more serious subject is Band of Brothers. A good movie to react to is The Martian with Matt Damon.

Tuck is similar to Ludo from what I understand but what they're playing looks like a variation of Chinese Checkers.

The Alliance claims jurisdiction of the whole system. This is what the war was about. The Central Planets wanted to bring everyone under their rule. Since the Independents lost The Alliance technically controls the whole system which would also include any abandoned ships floating between planets. However they have a smaller presence on the Outer Planets so they can't police them as effectively as the Core Worlds.

To my mind, Adelai Niska is one of the most terrifying villains I've seen on the small screen. Michael Fairman plays him with polite but boundless menace. He is, how you say, solid.

Not only do the Alliance claim control over planets and space, you'll recall the cargo they salvaged from the derelict was imprinted with Alliance markings (a bit like a gold hallmark) so they couldn't sell it to Badger, and had to go to Patience instead. Chewbacca the cat is now an avid watcher with me (he likes anything sci-fi 😂

Don't feel bad about struggling with a second language. I only speak one and admire people who can speak more than one. I've always heard that game in the beginning called "Chinese Checkers," and love to play it. Also, you have a pretty good assessment of Jayne. Did you catch at the end we saw what "Two by two, hands of blue" meant with those two government agents looking for River?

Note: You start down the Browncoat path when you start singing "The Ballad of Serenity." 20:01 Good, you speak in complete sentences and don't refer to other shows with acronyms, abbreviations or memes. "Firefly" is a "Popcorn show," so eating a meal fits right in,;)

As a "sitcom girl" you will find a lot of great humour in this show (as you probably already noticed by now 😉). That's one of the many great achievements of Firefly. While the stories are never comedic, they are written in a way that always leaves a little space for some great funny moments and whitty lines, that doesn't feel out of place even in a serious story.

The Alliance claims jurisdiction over all human inhabited areas....Alliance dominance had been what the "Unification" war had been about, and the Independents had lost. I have always had the feeling that the sheriff had been a browncoat in the war. He didn't flinch when Mal insulted the Alliance.

You will come to see how each episode of this show is a different genre. I actually saw the movie first, then bought the DVD boxset on my way home. I binged it in a couple of days, and recomend it to everyone I know.
