From a gemmological perspective, a lot of the busts are reflectve of the ways the gems actually form in real life. The diamonds have octagedrons very promenantly showing, whilst bort has a more amorphous blob at their base which what bort is, polycrystaline blobby diamonds. Padparachas colours are in 60° lines which is often how inclusions and colour in sapphire is seen. Alexandrites triangular base is how naturally it forms in these V shapes. Goshenites, red beryls, and morganites bases are hexagonal, once again mimicing natural beryl crystals. For watermelon tourmaline, i cannot connect the round base with much but its so fascinating how you can see the pink that usualy is only ever seen in their hair follows a collumn all the way down their body, like real tourmaline. Skipping forward a bit as i dont have as much to say for these, natualy rutile forms as realy thin and long crystals which we can see in their hair and podium, but also lore wise rutile is most often found as inclusions themselves inside other crystals and especialy in sapphires (which is what padparacha is) can be connected to the way they try to "fill" the holes in padparacha. Excuse my long rant, but im a gemmologist and this manga means so much to me. I love seeing how Ichikawa connects the real life science to the manga!!!

do you think it would be better if Phos use "Farewell" instead of "Goodbye" ? from what I understand Farewell implies you expect never to see each other again. Goodbye does not imply that. by that logic since Phos knew they wouldn't see the lunarians ever again Farewell would fit so much better would it?

La verdad, en ese manga era imposible tener ships por la narrativa y la historia, y eso no es malo, considero que no en todas las obras literarias/series o películas el espectador debe tener ships para disfrutarlas. Yo la única relación platónica que queria que se desarrollara en hnk como una bonita amistad, era la de Phos y Cinnabar, ya que técnicamente son contrapartes, pero bueno, ya sabemos como terminan las dos. Ame este manga, aúnque me destrozó emocionalmente.

Great analysis, although I interpreted Rutile's anger as resentment towards what they feel is an act of betrayal on Padparadscha's part. Imagine loving someone so much you dedicate thousands of years of hard work to heal them, and someone steals that person away and you see them easily healed after what, mere weeks? By the same enemies that you've been fighting your entire life, no less. It's enough to break anyone down, especially with the way that the gems seem to consider their own worth in society. Rutile prides themselves on being the doctor, that's their role, and part of why they try to heal Padparadscha could be interpreted as trying to give them back their "worth" as a fighter. I think it's mentioned that, when Padparadscha is awake, they are second in combat only to Bort, and that brilliance in battle might be a reason why Rutile became so enamoured with them in the first place. Regardless, when the Lunarians easily heal Padparadscha, Rutile feels so much betrayal and worthlessness that they essentially crack and break.

Honestly, the relationship between Aechmea and Cairngorm is extremely haunting, not only for the surface-level bits, but for what Cairngorm has been through up to this point. They’re arguably the one who receives the least amount of levity within the story. Every attachment they have can be considered the most obviously and outwardly unhealthy, and they’ve spent a majority of their time as a means to an end for other characters, as a servant or an obstacle, rather than filling a role or being given the choice to pursue their own path in the beginning like Phos. So, Aechmea essentially saw someone who did not have proper experience, was in ~3 toxic dynamics, and was lashing out due to both naïveté and said lack of experience, and only chose to take them aside and keep all of their attention on him so that he could prevent them from gaining any while also furthering that of one of their manipulators. Technically two manipulators, actually. That mf is NOT seeing heaven after the prayer, let me tell you. Not the bride and groomer over hereeee

I wanted cinnaphos to be real so bad and i just wished that phos wouldn't have pushed themselves to be useful and change themselves and saw theur relationship as something thats not contractual would've been so nice but even with the ending we got its still good because even that phos was alone at least (?) the other gems were happy (?) i dont really know how to feel about it.

I just got into hnk and read it once but seeing this was making me think about all the details i just pushed aside and just said whatever to and i started to realise i liked the gem society more for some reason and it really made me think about my view on society its self as a person always trying to comform to what others find appealing i realised that hnk is really not that different from real life

dia and bort is weird to "ship" since they're family,, technically speaking,, they use siblings terms and are both actually made carbon. and then i know its not mentioned, but this also goes for sapphire, ruby, and padparadscha, all being made of corundum. theres also a comic strip with them, the title being "rutile vs the corundum brothers". another thing, this also applies to goshe and morganite, aswell as red beryl too, all being, obviously. made of beryl,,,, and extra tdibit, even if not much about them, but this alsoooo applies to aquamarine, heliodor, emerald, and bixibite,, also being beryl, even if some don't actually exist,, chrysoberyl and alexandrite can also be questionable, but its moreso up to the fandom than anything on what their relationship could be, but they are both chrysoberyl in the end.. okayyyy thats all i have to share great video
