    Back in the old days we used to camp and sit around the campfire all night. I think back then those generation of deer knew the hunters all smelled like smoke and avoided. I think with less campers these days the deer aren't aware. Im talking deer camps where 30 campers would all have a fire and also remember when everyone leaves deer walk through these camps and investigate and learn.

    The best scent cover you can get and this is from a serious Deer Hunter with 4050 years experience is to play the wind. I don't care what you're using when a deer comes up from behind you. They're gonna smell you always hunt with the wind in your face

    Much like cold smoke salmon. The smoke kills the bacteria that will ruin the fish. Smoke kills the bacteria that causes odor. It's not jus a cover scent.

    I'm big on scent control, as any serious hunter must be. That said, I feel the urge to bring some light to the topic of "cover scents."" Im a professional k9 handler/master trainer, and so the science of scent is directly in my wheelhouse. Deer, just like dogs, have the ability to individually distinguish over 100 scents simultaneously. To illustrate this to my students, I use the "vegetable stew" analogy. When you and I smell the stew, we may pick up one or two of the more prominent scents like onions or garlic, but for the most part, we smell the totality of the concoction... the sum of its parts. Deer, on the other hand, smell each odor individually and simultaneously. It is literally just as impossible to cover-up your human odor as it is to completely eliminate it. If you are fooling deer, its because you are wind and scent conscious. I do believe you can reduce your scent signature and fool a deer into believing you are farther away that you actually are. The commercial hunting industry has soaked billions out of the everyday hunter and I'm here to tell you that its all placebo. Nonetheless, I really do love the channel and hope you have continued success. God bless.

      I certainly appreciate your perspective and have read of the tests with dogs and a guy with a carbon suit on. If we know anything about these creatures we know the good Lord gave them a sense of smell that us humans can barely fathom. However, taking variables into account, like hunting in areas where deer are used to harmless human intrusion, or maybe just the possibility that a deer might be distracted from a certain smell by a different smell, like I’ve seen with my Labrador….how can you be 100% certain that the success testified here for smoking clothes is 100% placebo?

    • @wagstag89
      @wagstag89 4 місяці тому

      Yeah I recently watched a test where they took a search and rescue dog and would walk him into a field down wind of a human wearing different cover scents and cover scent clothing. There were several giant boxes for the human to hide in and each time they turned the dog loose he ran straight to the correct box like it was nothing. If you can't fool a dog's nose you certainly can't fool a deer or hogs nose since they are both better. Quite a bit better actually. My routine for years has just been to wash hunting clothes in cheap scent free detergent and rinse off in the shower before going out but this is just to help eliminate any extra and unnecessary smells. Not to cover my scent. The only way you're doing that is by playing the wind and hoping it doesn't change on you

    I been smoking my clothes this year and I’ve been having deer coming within ten yards and I’ll tell you also I tried.. balsam fir incense logs. I light one of those and let it smoke while I’m out in the woods. I’ve had buck down wind and never flinch and this is during archery. So yes I’m a firm believer that the smell of smoke definitely masks your scent and I don’t use any scent lock clothes. In fact I wear seclusion 3d total concealment camo that is screened since it’s still pretty warm out and I hunt on the ground.

    As you're hunting with smoked filled clothes and the wind is in your face, you could bathe in gasoline and it wont matter. Guy around home wanted to try diesel fuel and hydraulic oil because thats what leakes off tractors and combines. He never tried it.
