Discover the Secrets of Dutch Happiness: An American Perspective
The Dutch are among the happiest people in the world. Year after year, they rank in the top ten on the World Happiness Index. Why is that?
In this video, I share my perspective as an American living in the Netherlands. I discuss several key factors, including the high standard of living, strong sense of community and social connection, excellent work-life balance, and the cultural concept of gezelligheid-a word that perfectly captures the coziness and togetherness Dutch people cherish. I also touch on the role of a secular, open-minded society in fostering individual freedom and happiness.
But there’s more to the story-at the end of the video, I reveal one surprising reason for Dutch happiness, backed by research from a Dutch happiness expert.
If you’ve ever wondered why the Dutch consistently rank among the happiest people globally, tune into this video to find out.

Thank you for your videos. I enjoy them a lot! I’ve never thought about why other people are happy or unhappy. I just live my life, enjoy as much as I can, barely worry, barely have stress, and if I see someone who I might be able to help, I will. I don’t chase money, I don’t chase possessions, I don’t care about much other than what is needed. And since I have all that, I am happy. Happy in the US, where many aren’t that happy. I think a lot of that has to do with money. Many think that if you are rich, you are successful, and if you’re successful, you must be happy. People who become rich find out, that they are still not happy. They are literally looking to buy happiness. To me it’s what I feel, not what others (might) think of me.
Sorry but this is delusional and toxic positivity I live in NL for 20 years and from what I see is that lots of people are depressed and look grumpy. Mental health issues are on the rise especially for young people, 66% of women are being harassed. Housing crisis. Alcoholism. The list goes on. Lots of expats dont know how it is here and they will agree with ur video.
It’s not WHAT we see but HOW we see. The Netherlands ranks among the happiest nations year after year for the reasons delineated. There is no country that is immune to mental health issues, rising housing costs, etc. That is because every country has one thing in common: people. But comparatively speaking, the Dutch consider themselves happy, and in my opinion they have many reasons to be. But, let’s face it, happiness is largely a choice, and people are just about as happy as they make up their minds to be. I am sorry if that is not your experience.
My two cents: the Dutch like to complain about the weather, traffic, crowds etc. to blow off steam and as an topic starter. Nobody likes people who complain all the time about everything and are allways the victim. "Niet klagen, maar dragen"
@@dutchmaestro731 Thank you for sharing your two cents. “Niet klagen, maar dragen” are words to live by. 👍
I live on Dutch Saba in the Caribbean and I agree with everything you pointed out as we have that here too .... plus sunny warm weather year round. That means many mainland Dutchies come here to visit us!
@@JefftheSabaDude Gosh, Jeff, now you’re just making me envious. All the great attributes of the Netherlands AND plenty of sunny weather? 🌞 It seems you’ve found a little slice of heaven for yourself.
@@BetterTogether-UnIr1 I am sure that if the 3 special municipalities of the Netherlands in the Caribbean (Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba) were big enough, the Netherlands wouldn't have a housing crisis. 😉 And there are 3 countries in the Caribbean that politically belong to the Kingdom of the Netherlands which are Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten. Also not too bad to live in I believe. Greetings and love from Mönchengladbach, Germany, Sabine

Recently I found your channel and I really enjoy watching your videos. Your soothing voice, your insight in and appreciation of Dutch culture after living here so many years. It’s good to have an ‘outside’ view of our country to see how privileged we actually are despite all our complaints 😊 As a Dutch woman, I have never felt unsafe anywhere or at any time. It’s such a given, that I take this mindset with me when I go abroad even if it might not have been warranted in some places. What makes me happy here in the Netherlands? That it’s okay and even advocated to just be me, nothing more, nothing less.

Never leave without goodbye. Never leave without a kiss. For if one's end is sudden nigh, the last chance has been missed. Don't walk away without a talk, ache your heart it might. What you leave behind at dawn, can have dissapeared by night. By a famous dutch poem. That sums it up
@@CarpeDiem-gi3yz That’s beautiful. What a touching poem. Thank you for sharing. ❤️
Where did you get that Sh.... please go to the poor Area. There are many. Only in paradise you can happy. Are you an ET
Besides the things you mentioned, it are the little, more or less crazy, typical Dutch things that make me happy. Like the Evangelical Party taking care that prostitutes also were getting income during Covid. Or employers not only paying for energy for people working at home, but also took action that the government wouldn’t tax this as income. That the first university in the world pioneering and treating transsexuals was, and still is, is the Protestant VU. That we have a political party for animals, and for 50+ people. And that this parties aren’t useless. That the new low income houses in my neighborhood not only have solar panels, but also built-in bird nests. That we need to import our rescue dogs, so that now all the dogs in my apartment building come from other countries. That my city planted spring bulbs everywhere years ago, and that these bulbs keep spreading out. And not to forget the telephone circle for people living alone, to check every day if we are alright. So I start my day with a call from the Red Cross volunteer, and I call the next one in the circle. I don’t think this exists in other countries. The Wikipedia page has no other languages. That people don’t like or hate some new statues, but when something happens to the statue the same people demand that it must be repaired or replaced with a copy. (Experienced this two times) All case make me think that I live in a great, funny and happy country.
Sunshine. With so much grey and shitty weather the sun immediately boosts moods. (Unless it's there for longer than a week. Never fear: we'll complain!)

The impression that was left upon me from living there, cannot be put into words. After leaving, I was homesick for years, and I easily realized that compared to most Americans I know, the Dutch are by far, Happier, Healthier, and Wealthier. De Bijenkorf, as well as the later founded subsidiary HEMA, was originally a Jewish company. The biggest competitor later became Vroom en Dreesman. But even later, these 3 companies came under one regime. V&D mainly went bankrupt due to the sale of all its real estate. HEMA almost went bankrupt due to the same debt accumulation by means of the withdrawal of capital and real estate from the company by foreign investors. Fortunately, the tide has turned for HEMA, but this formula also had to shrink at the expense of the debts incurred by foreign investors, opportunists, the internet and low-quality goods companies such as Action.
I wish I was gay.
I announced on Thanksgiving Day to my family that I was going to move to the Netherlands and absolutely no one was surprised. The only surprise was that I was not moving to Germany. I was stationed in Germany when I was in the Army and it took an act of Mom to get me back to the US. Now that my mother has passed, I am leaving Dodge. I just need to sell my house.
That’s exciting news. I am rooting for you. What made you choose the Netherlands over Germany?
And it's that easy. You just pack up and go. I wish Americans were just as comfortable with others moving to their country as they are with deciding when and where they move to. I vet there won't be a Homan to round you up. Be welcome. 🙋🏾

Dream less , act gently , dont talk loud .
Complaining is healthy for the soul. I think positivity is forced so much globally, even here in the Netherlands. But all that means is that you are not being authentic. Positivity and negativity are two sides of the same coin.
Wise words. Authenticity is everything, isn’t it? Thanks for your comment. 👍
I do agree, living in Holland, I know the always happy thing is so far from the truth and very YTbe.
Tulsa but people in America are doing that now. I wonder if the people doing it now are of Dutch descent because all it leads to is people misleading others. People will seem so cool that you'll think they'll be friends with you then they never will in actuality. I can't stand that fake and bake stuff coming from someone transgender with Italian American descent and poor. I am in a bad mood often and cynical. It's as if they give the impression that they'll let you into their world by putting all these socially free things out there but its just in a general sense only. Individually nobody will probably wanna get to know you though. Sorta like it is in the NW.
For me, the social safety net gives me a sense of security that keeps me happy.
I can imagine. It really does remove any sense of urgency or insecurity. 😊
Love this. Thank you❤

Thank you for linking this video Mike, I love how well and thoughtful you describe your way to dual citizenship! I look forward to your next videos!
Thanks, Chris. I appreciate your good words.
I have only just discovered your video channel and I must say I love the sympathetic and empathetic way you describe your life in the Netherlands. I wanted to start a vlog for years and just didn't do it and your videos have given me inspiration again. My tips for Dutch brands is a clothing brand Roosenstein Wolke. It is a Frisian family business (I have Frisian roots) that started in 1886 with the rooscap, a sailor's cap that they still make. They are now in their fifth generation and make sustainable clothing inspired by the rugged Frisian outdoors. Since I live in Utrecht, I also recommend a clothing shop that started making bespoke clothing in a modern way in 1997: New Tailor. I don't know if you actually call this a ‘brand’, like the next tip: Holtkamp. It is a patisserie that is a household name in Amsterdam and the Netherlands. It's super traditional. And sometimes that's just really nice. Besides, if you really want to know how to make speculaas, tompouce, marzipan and other traditional Dutch products at home, you can always turn to Holtkamp's recipes.
Thank you so much for your encouraging words; they mean so much. If you want to start a vlog, I encourage you to do so. Just start. Promise me you will.😊Hit record, start telling your story and upload the video. That’s the biggest hurdle. Once you’ve started, the rest will follow naturally. I have learned so much in the week and a half that I’ve been doing it. And I have been having so much fun. I love to receive comments like yours, which spur me on. Thank you, too, for your insider tips on specialty Dutch brands and shops. I am sure other viewers will appreciate your suggestions, as I have. ❤️

Ever heard of Columbus?
@@marnixkalkman7254 You must have read that in a Dutch history book. 😆 Every account I’ve read says Columbus discovered America or the "New World”. Vikings such as Leif Eriksson visited North America centuries earlier, and - it should not be forgotten - Native American tribes lived in the Americas for centuries before either Columbus or the Vikings arrived. So the whole concept of Europeans “discovering” America is revisionist history. In any case, it certainly wasn’t the Dutch. Still, it’s true that Manhattan (Native American Indian name) was once New Amsterdam. But all that comes much later.
@BetterTogether-UnIr1 I'm ten years older than you are and I'm sorry to say: It seems to me today's youth has this habit 'of not recording historical facts'. It is disconcerting to see how many of 'us' forget what was common knowledge. More that that: How little fact based education is still being taught. Either I'm getting old and forgetting what school was like, or schooling has taken a turn into a direction that must be changed. 😢
@@Paul_C Things are certainly not what they used to be. You and I remember a time before Internet, when we had to learn the old fashioned way…from library research and books. These days, there’s so much mis-information, it’s difficult to discern fact from fiction. Thanks for your comment. 👍

Great choices Mike. I collect mid-century modern furniture, danish teak and abstract paintings. Whoppah is great. I love Marcel's green soap.
