The Aqueduct of Valens and the Water Supply System of Byzantine Constantinople

Hola señor, hay el mismo vídeo en español?Muchas gracias ❤🎉
A beautiful monument! Thanks!
I don't know why it popped up in my recommendations, but as a fellow byzantologist you just earned a subscriber man! You've been blessed by an almighty algorith :D Good job and keep it up :)
The narration is always super helpful. Thanks
awesome video, thank you :D very informative
HELP! HELP! I live in an area where the water channels pass through. My goal is to study the aqueducts and channels, to explore and learn about this legendary system that is about 1700 years old. I have read almost all the articles related to this water system, and I have had the opportunity to visit most of the water channels (Kurşungerme, Ballıgerme, Büyükgerme, Kumarlıgerme). So, my friend, I am in love with this history and these structures. I stand and applaud the Roman engineers and craftsmen who built them back then. However, my brother, we have a big problem. I live in Danamandıra Village, where the first branch of the system starts in the 4th century. My parents are also from here. The problem stems from the fact that in the late 5th century, a second branch was added to the system starting from Bizye (Vize) Pazarlı, and this branch passes through our village. I have found the water source (PAŞA) where this branch originates. However, according to the map I saw from Mr. Bay Bayliss, I know that the central government is planning to open a new quarry at the exact transition point, since I live in the village. This would truly be a disaster for our region. Not only will our historical water channels be damaged, but our forests and trees will be destroyed as well. My request from you is this: Please send me the detailed map of Mr. Bay Bayliss. If I come across any channel traces in the area where the quarry will be opened, I can report the situation to the central government authorities and prevent the opening of the quarry that will destroy this nature. I beg you, please help the historical channel and the nature! The 7-hectare forest area, the historical S.O. channel, and our stream that provides water to the Terkos Dam are under threat. 🙏🙏 ---
This is my city. Thank you for caring enough to make this video.
“The venerable David” perhaps a better rendering of Osios? Anyway a very good little video
I love your videos. Thank you. :)
Good stuff
Very interesting church which deserves to be better known.
Beautiful video. Why are these resplandecent mosaics so unknown? These are as good or better than those of Ravenna.
it is not directly related to the topic, but it is an open question for me. In what way were they able to depict Constantinople from above, if there were no airplanes at the time that could allow them to rise so high that they could accurately see the proportions and the shape of the peninsula.
You're assuming it was accurate... but you can also measure on foot, then draw with perspective.
@@funklebunkleforever exactly this is the base question, how was perspective...because there is no such perspective without elevation....
@gabihorvath3106 The City is visible from many different points from various hills inside and outside the walls, as well as from the sea by boat. This allows for someone to have a better view than most of the other famous cities in the world. Take at look at some historic images from Galata Tower on the webpage to give you an idea how it is possible (even if not totally accurate). www.thebyzantinelegacy.com/galata
Thank you!
Thank you for this. I wonder what the inside looked like. Take care...
Where is this curch

Prayer for my 29 year old neighbour Luke who has diabetes and is in hospital as I write this Luke helped me make video Darius in Ezra on my UA-cam channel our very first attempt Prayer for another neighbour Matthew whose Name day is in two days time on 21 September I had asked Matthew to watch over Luke but he did not and even failed to make video for month August Named after pagan Emperor Augustus Luke 2/1 ruled 30BC to 14 AD Video to be called Imperator Semper Augustus Matthew had promised to do so to be made by his eldest son as their first lesson in Latin for PAX ROMANA under which Eternal Emperor who brings Eternal Peace because He Is Perfect Prince of Peace was born in Bethlehem
Cool.
At least its still standing. A bit of cleanup and resttorative work wouldn't hurt.

Good narration, excellent visuals, thanks!
Wish I could one day visit the lands of Anatolia. Until then your videos are a great replacement
Byzantine is beautiful.
Leave it to the turks to destroy everything.
beautiful
Beautiful
I see mystras..i immediately click like! Thanks
The water supply of Constantinople has always fascinated me. I understand how the water came in - gravity. But how was the water pulled OUT? How were the fountains, mentioned in the video, fed? How did homes access the cisterns? Buckets? Archimedes screw?
Generally speaking, the cisterns were above the main points of water distribution and then the secondary point, so it was supplied by gravity as a whole. Some places in the palace could have had more mechanical devices. For example Theophilus had automata in his mechanical throne, indicating the sophisticated level of technology used in the palace.
@@TheByzantineLegacy thank you! By the way...just LOVE your work. And tell Yasin that "dean said hello" if you ever see him.

The glory of Greece
One of my favorite spots in Greece. Partially restored - this complex is one of the few places which give you an idea of what Byzantine churches looked like, prior to the Turkish conquest. One of the best preserved churches in existance.
Muy bello ❤❤❤
