The Rügensche BäderBahn
The Rügensche BäderBahn is a narrow gauge railway (750 mm) started in 1895 that these days connects the attractive Putbus station with the pleasant seaside resorts of Lauterbach Mole, Binz, Sellin, Baabe und Göhren on the island of Rügen on the Baltic Sea in northeastern Germany. Nicknamed the “Rasender Roland” (Raging Roland), this idyllic stretch of track has since 2008 been operated by the Pressnitztalbahn.
In this video taken in 2018, we arrive in Putbus on a modern local feeder train from the main line station of Bergen auf Rügen. In Putbus we see engines shunting and taking on coal. From there we’ll travel the short distance south to Lauterbach Mole on a train topped and tailed by two steam engines, no. 99 4632-8 which is a Lenz Typ M (0-8-0T) from 1914, and no. 99 1782-4 which is a type 1'E1'-h2t (2-10-2T) from 1953.
After that it’s off to the end station of Göhren 18 km away to the east. On the way back we round off the video by showing trains crossing paths at Binz. Our last view of a steam loco is no. 99 4011-5 which is a type D h2t (2-8-0T) engine built in 1931-36.

The SS Badger is the last coal-fired steamship in the United States, and it is also a registered National Historical Landmark. By the 1980s, these routes were becoming less profitable, and the Chessie System so...

Helps that THESE engines still have a place to run. The old Milwaukee Road electrics are basically homeless now because their lines were either ripped-up or un-electrified. Judging from the blower noise heard occasionally, they likely also have air-cooled electrical components - no toxic chemicals to worry about in the case of the GG1's.
