Tour of my £300 DIY heat pump (heat pumps don't have to be expensive)
Переглядів 18 тис.2 роки тому
I'm quite pleased with my heat pump and thought i would share it on youtube. The radiators have been off for ages and the house is still at 20*C. Heat pumps don't have to be expensive. This heat pump only uses a third of the CO2 emissions of my gas boiler and in summer it can do air conditioning.

This is the most Heath Robinson thing I've seen in a while - and I love it. The previous owner of our house was a HVAC engineer and he left a portable AC unit that he'd ducted in a similar way to warm/dehumidify the ensuite. I don't think it actually runs in heat mode, so there's some trickery going on including mixing the warm exhaust air with the cold supply air. It works well enough but I think I'm going to replace it with a MVHR unit. Amazing stuff, thanks for documenting it

Great effort on this. I too have the Airflex15 V2. I've planned a similar set up with a few little tweaks. Interesting that it runs better to split the duct. I'm surprised you haven't adapted it to be used for summer and utilising the cold air. Have you considered installing PV panels? I'm contemplating a 7KW battery PV system which I've estimated should cover it. Just need a little excess power to heat water, which would get me off the oil boiler. Hopefully once I've completed the setup and can compare.

This is very clever. But is it a heat pump? Perhaps in the most literal sense of the term. What is the rating? SEER should be easy. But HSPF would be hard to determine. Same for COP. That said I am going to try it given that i have several of these units kicking around. Also the hack to trick it into functioning more like a non ducted heat pump is more complicated than your average DIY person is capable of.

Good video, but one thing I don’t understand is the assertion that you’re humidifying the place by evaporation the condensate. But you’re not humidifying the place, you’re merely reducing the amount that you dehumidify it by. You’re only recirculating the moisture that’s already there, right? Your not adding any moisture.

I am very impressed with this. I have now tried it on a simple circuit. Ours is only a 1.4Kw air conditioner but it’s useful to be able to reverse it for winter vs summer. Only uses 300Wh and maintains temp so far. Thank you for the idea

Great job. Thank You 🙂I did it the same with one exception - my source of outer air is ground heat exchanger. This exchanger made me the air with 9-11C all winter :-). I use fral 19sc with R290. My cop after changes is about 5 to 6. I connected it to existed ventilation system with recuperation. Greeting from Poland.

I was impressed and inspired with your work. On the strength of your YT portable heat pump system videos, I purchased a used Friedrich PH14B unit which is a dual hose unit with the built in heating function. It cost me $100 (~£80) plus another ~$50 to duct and rig a semi-permanent installation. Currently, I’ve only had it running for a few days. It’s the Fall season northern USA (outside air temp (°F) mid 50°s to mid 30°s), it heats the entire house. Many thanks.

These are great, they are used commercially as you then have the whole cylinder as storage. Like having a half flat battery you don't have as much. Mix the water up you then keep the demand there via the solar so you then gain more heat from the sun rather than it shutting off when it thinks following stratification that it's reached temperature. Love this channel.

I'd like to see a better explanation as to what you are talking about with the outside air being colder than the exhaust air? The exhaust air should always be colder as it's removed heat from it so unless the exhaust air is coming from the garage only then only then can the exhaust be warmer than the outside air. If the source of the exhaust air is from the outside air. You probably need to try duct return air from the house to the units intake. On your video you seem to be ducting the outside air into the condenser part of the system (the top coil that is heating the air) - the air in the house (maybe not the garage) is always going to be warmer than outside air so you should be using air from the house to heat otherwise your just constantly heating cold air. By all means use the warmer garage air (which assuming this is warmer than outside air) as the source of air for heat or just use the outside air but your asking the system to work harder by using fresh outside air to go through the hot part of the system.

  • @FloatingIdeasonanarrowboat

I've bought a portable ac to try something similar on my narrowboat. What I've found is it has two drain ports. One at the bottom like you use and one halfway up, just below the evaporator. I mistakenly put my drain hose in the top one and it seems to catch the water before it drops to the bottom. Being higher it is easier to put a bucket under it. I might open it up to see exactly where the water travels internally. A heat pump would have been my choice but I'm on solar only, so a 500btu ac unit is a cheap experiment. PS I suspect the water impeller turns off in dehumidifier mode but haven't checked mine.

    • @FloatingIdeasonanarrowboat
      @FloatingIdeasonanarrowboat Рік тому

I just thought, a heating mode would swap condenser and evaporator functions so it might not have a second drain.

Normally immersion heaters are at the top, unless you have an old economy 7 cylinder. What Matthew is describing is a retro fit for an existing tank. Cheaper than buying a new tank and all the fittings. Could be circa £1k+ all in

If the machine was inside the house thereby in a warmer space this would expose the condenser to warmer air thus increasing the running temperature of the evaporator resulting in fewer defrosting cycles? Noise inside the house would increase of course but it would not be running for as long making operation cheaper. Would appreciate opinions on this please 😂

I'm really enjoying all the investigation people are doing into heating at the moment - we've been trialing far infrared this winter and had some pretty good results from that [1]. As it happens, we have the same portable heatpump as you hooked up to some ducting in the loft to provide cooling upstairs in summer, so I think we'll explore some of the tweaks you made in terms of condense management etc so we could use it in the heating season as well - thanks for sharing :) I don't know how long you've had a smart meter, but you might find the tools Guy Lipman has provided useful in analysing your gas consumption against temperature. It lets you easily download CSV data for your gas (this will be in units, so needs multiplying to get kWh) / electricity consumption for various periods (daily, half hourly etc) [2]. There's a Medium article [3] documenting how to use it. If you combine this with data from degreedays.io [4] you can get a fairly good estimate for gas usage at certain outdoor temperatures. Do you have an electricity usage against outdoor temperature for the heatpump - similar to your gas bill comparison? 1. ua-cam.com/play/PL4hBB421fBGr37fvzLcONhfAqfBYys9Fj.html 2. energy.guylipman.com/sm/admin?source=octopus 3. guylipman.medium.com/accessing-your-octopus-smart-meter-data-3f3905ca8fec 4. degreedays.io/Tools/DegreeDaysCalculator

I was looking for a more economical way to avoid putting central air heat pump in a house and use geothermal piping and fluid to a radiator for the heat transfer in winter and reverse in summer when it is warm. This system may be what I am looking for instead of spending $30,000 for complete geothermal system. Not sure if the portable system will heat/cool a 1500 square foot house unless hooked to the duct work. Thanks.
