Broadway Limited N scale Big Boy running on the Hill Valley Subdivision.

My friend brought his new Big Boy over for a test run. Here's a compilation of some video I shot. Overall it's a nice-running locomotive. It did slip a bit pulling the 17 cars caboose train on the curves of the 2% grade. But most of my locos including BLI Mikados can only pull 11-12 before slipping.

A test run of my new BLI light Pacific pulling 20 cars up the 2% grade on my layout. The cars are all factory weight, I haven't added any additional weight to them.

Welcome to the Hill Valley Subdivision N Scale Model Railroad

The Hill Valley Subdivision is a fictional division of the Union Pacific, modeled in N scale. This video serves as an introduction to the layout. Here's the link to the Virginian and Ohio track plan I mention in the video: www.trains.com/mrr/how-to/track-plan-database/virginian-and-ohio-2/
Hello... I've come across your excellent N scale street video. It is exactly what I'm looking for. Since it is an older video, it seems the link to purchasing your street template tools does no longer work. Are you still in the hobby, and do you still still sell the templates? Sadly, I cannot afford a 3D printer and templates look like the perfect tools. I hope you are still monitoring your channel. STU
I like the Delorean on the parallel road. Now you need to detail the inside of the tunnels! Fun to watch.
The side shots are a great idea! I've never thought about doing that on a cab ride. It adds a very nice perspective!
I enjoyed seeing your layout from a different perspective! Awesome!
Thanks for the ride, I got the same mini camera.
It's not bad. I wish the focal distance was a bit closer, but I'm sure not complaining for $30!
This isn't N scale. I don't get it.
Yep, it's N scale.
hi doug love the layout. thanks for all you do. great job.
Thanks Troy!
Lookin' great! Your rocks look real. I've been thinking about the best way to make "mountains", and yours just solved my internal debate. N scale can make mountains look a lot higher, and a good sized pike doable in the space of a small HO RR. I also love those figures. They make any layout come to life.😁
Glad I could help! The rock casting molds from Woodland Scenics are great!
And yes, you can do a lot more in the space in N scale!
Great video. Where can I find the stl files for the tools?
Hi there, sorry for the slow response. The stl files can be downloaded here: www.thingiverse.com/thing:6431480 Good luck! It'd be great if you'd come back and leave a comment letting me know how they worked for you.
Looking good, simple and uncluttered.
Thanks!
Looking good! 👍🏾😁👍🏾
Thank you!
Looks great, thanks for the update. I'm actually doing your sidewalk technique with the styrene.!
Awesome, I hope it works for you!
Looking good!
Thank you, I appreciate it!
The rock work looks amazing!
Thank you so much! It's definitely a learning process!
Nice work on the rock face and canyon! Ron
Thanks Ron! It's a learning process for sure!
Doug. Looks great. Progress all around--I love it! One of my students gave me a NIB Marklin Z scale starter set with a few turnouts. I will be setting it up on the dining room table and also grab my Lionel stuff and set up a train near the Christmas tree. Haven't done that in 10-15 years. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks Don! Z scale is intimidating! I'll be breaking out the Lionel for our tree as well!
Great ideas! Thanks!
You are so welcome!
Great update on your Railroad....Sometime life just gets in the way.
That's for sure. Thanks as always for your comments and viewership!
Great video and much appreciated for the link to order the printed tools. I have yet to venture into 3D printing at home and that definitely saved me the step of having to source a vendor to do the printing for me.
Thank you! Please leave a comment and let me know if you get the tools and how they work for you! Thanks for being here!
I hope you put a delorean somewhere in your landscaping
Yep, there's a time machine on the layout! I move it around from time to time.
Nice work. Really enjoyed this and saw a few ideas to try. I love your coal tipple. What do you use to create your switch lists?. Do you need a buffer car between the power and the petroleum tankers?
Thank you. Originally, I was using JMRI Operations Pro to generate switch lists. Over time, I realized that I could modify them slightly, and have 2 iterations of switch lists, where the 1st iteration sets up the 2nd, and the 2nd iteration resets for the first. It makes it so that technically, I'm always ready for an Ops Session. We'll see how that goes over time. Yes, technically I should have a buffer car, but I don't really get too wrapped up on that kind of detail. I run ops sessions with my family who are not model railroaders and so I don't worry about it.
Thanks Doug. That was very relaxing and interesting to watch. I had no idea that N scale cars use/require a hand tool for uncoupling. Years ago I made an Ho scale shunting puzzle to teach RR merit badge where I used magnetic uncouplers on the puzzle layout. The scouts really liked figuring out how to move the cars around without picking them up by hand. Your layout will provide many hours of enjoyment I’m sure.
Thanks Don, I'm glad you enjoyed it! You can use magnetic uncouplers with micro-trains couplers, I just feel like putting magnetic uncouplers under the track limits you, and I'm afraid I wouldn't get them in the right place. Even the HO layouts I have the opportunity to visit use uncoupling tools (typically bamboo skewers).
Nice video operations is always great to watch how others operate their layouts.
I agree. I'm very tempted to move to car cards, but this method keeps it simple for visitors that may not be as experienced in operations.
Real nice Op's running, enjoyed it.
Thanks! I really enjoy ops and switching freight!
Very cool 👍 🤠 👍
Thank you Randy!
Love the way you have captured the open hills of CA. And a nice smooth, slow run of the train! Nicely done!
Thank you! I promise you that any accuracy in the landscape is purely accidental! I'm not quite that talented, but I'm glad it looks the part! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing about the details on your operations
You're welcome! I always appreciate your comments!
Absolutely amazing! So much detail you put in it.
Thank you my friend!
Doug. I’d be interested in seeing one of the simpler job set-ups doing their switching operations dropping of and picking up. I have an HO shunting puzzle I made to teach railroading merit badge but I’d like to see HOW you do it in N scale.
Hey Don! I can make that happen.
Great detail for running Op's.
Thanks. I worried it's would be too long, but wanted to get it all in their. I realized I didn't cover the 2nd passenger train very well, but it's enough to get the idea.
That'll keep operators busy.
That's my hope!
Nice work, sir. You are making great progress. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Paul. Slowly but surely...
Great update and thanks for sharing. Dave
Thank you Dave! Always happy to share when I have something worth sharing!
The DCC Concepts circuit breakers and auto reverse controller are what I use on my layout. In my opinion they are the best on the market, being programmable and using solid state relays. Nice layout and update.
I agree. I really like their products. Happy railroading!
Its nice to see BIG STEAM in N scale..
It really is. And even nicer to see it run well.
Thanks for the great update on the Layout. Bob
You are very welcome Bob! Thanks for watching and your comments!
Thanks for the update. Arthur
Thanks Arthur for continuing to watch and comment!
hello... just watched this video great job with the tools...i just subbed to your channel... i am an N scaler tat does lots of scratch builds...i was wondering since i don't have a printer would you be willing to sell me a set??? i would suggest to complete your streets to cue a product by Highways & Byways...their street graphics are awesome & to scale....here's what's in the kit ...yellow & white strips...direction arrows...stop...yield... they are not expensive... cool video thx 4 sharing... vinny
Hi Vinny! Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into it. I have been painting stripes on roads on other parts of the layout. Those graphics might help a ton. I've uploaded the sidewalk tools to shapeways, a site that 3D prints on demand and ships right to you. You can order a set from them at: www.shapeways.com/shops/dougatwood Thanks!!!
Thank You !!
Thank you for watching!
I really like the layout and have watched your videos. Cool mainline run with tunnels and bridges! Look forward to upcoming videos
Thank you very much!
Great Idea with Hill Valley. Also adding a coal tipple to my gas plant.
Yeah, I found the courthouse on Etsy while I was in the design phase, and just had to make it work.
great layout
Thank you Ian! Thanks so much for watching!
I am really enjoying your layout tour. Your running explanations are informative and interesting. Your truthfulness is a real drawing factor. I look forward to your future postings. Well done ! I like the "brakes" solution.
Thank you Debbie! I appreciate that. I always hope that the info and experiences I share can help others with their own layouts. I'm no expert by any means, but I hope to help where I can.
Great technique I plan to use on my layout
I hope it works for you! Please post back with an update when you try it!
Great update thanks for sharing 👍
Thank you for watching, I appreciate it!
Nice update thanks for sharing your progress.
I'm glad I was able to finally put another update together! Thank you for watching!
Looking good, thanks for the update.
Thank you my friend!
Great update, things look good.
Thanks, I appreciate it. Thank you for watching!
