Welcome to the Tree Talks! I am an Environmental Educator and Biologist with a passion for trees, and my hope is that this channel converts you to a tree-lover as well! Trees are story-tellers, and each of my videos is meant to help you dive into the story of different types of trees I get to see in my day to day life. My hope is that by helping people to better understand trees, we may value them more and strive to protect out forests. Try to imagine for just one moment what your day would look like without trees; the loss of wood products, fruit and nuts, shade, and so much more. What you can expect in the videos is identification tips for each tree, fun facts and human uses of the tree species, and a discussion of how that tree interacts with the rest of the ecosystem! These videos are perfect for both those who already love trees and want to learn more and those who couldn't tell a tree from a brussel sprout! I hope you find inspiration to get out and visit the forest!
Tulip Tree (Liriodendron tulipifera)
No shade to the eastern hardwood forests, but they are pretty dark places to try and survive as a tree...wait, maybe there is shade to the eastern hardwood forests! In this video, part of the Tree Talks with Theo Hoss series created by naturalist Theodore Hoss, we learn about how this beautiful and long-lived broadleaf species thrives and seeks sunlight in spite of competition from other broadleaf trees all trying to do the same. Featuring several specimens of what is commonly known as the Tulip Tree or Tulip Poplar, this deep-dive into the life of this species will hopefully serve as a solid introduction to this tree and some of its life-traits. The video also highlights some of the human uses for the Tulip Poplar, and introduces viewers to the concept of apical control. With luck, a greater understanding of these trees and the forests they are a part of can help you better understand the ways in which we as humans are also part of the ecosystem!
